A Bob Huggins story

In nearly 16 years of covering Bob Huggins, I’ve assembled quite a collection of Huggs stories. This is one of my favorites because it shows how good he was at times at creating his own reality, of believing what he wanted to believe – especially about the media:

We were in Milwaukee. UC had beaten Marquette and there were a few of us, along with Huggins, in the bar at the Hyatt Hotel after the game. I asked Bob who his least favorite writer was in Cincinnati and he named Tim Sullivan, who was then the sports columnist at The Enquirer. He then recounted how when Huggins recruited Art Long, Sully had written a critical column in which he said he wouldn’t want his daughter going to the same school that Art Long attended. “Now,” Huggins said, “his daughter goes to UC!”

I told him that that wasn’t true, that Sully did not have a daughter at UC. But Huggs was insistent. “Yes, he does,” he said. “His daughter goes there now.” To which I replied, “Bob, Sully’s daughter is 11 years old.”

“Oh,” Huggs said quietly. “I thought she did.”

During Huggs’ last year at UC, he once told me that if I ever decide to write a book about him, I shouldn’t leave my house. He was kidding. At least I think he was.

Lovely. Huggs and those "wonderful" West Virginia fans (short for fanatics) deserve each other.

Geez Bill,

Why don't you just post his DUI videotape if you want to bash him.

He's gone,(thank goodness) why don't you just ignore him.

As a UC fan, I liked Huggs. He did well by the university, and they really can't complain a lot. There isn't any weakness he had that wasn't offset by some strength.

If there was anything that killed him, it was attitude. As he won more, he became less and less dependent on the opinions of others, to include sportswriters and administrators. I watched TV interviews where he might as well have told them to go to hell. It was written all over his attiude.

This story about the girl who was not at UC is the story of a misunderstanding. It is not a story of any crime, any lack of integrity, any ethical lapse.

Everybody says, "Huggs is gone. Forget about him. Blah, blah, blah." But, he was just too big a part of this town. That's why we get these stories about Huggs...people just can't let him go.

And, they don't forget about him. Now he coaches a rival in our own conference.

Huggs will do well at WVU.

The jury, however, is still out on Cronin who is improving. I'm glad we've improved now to 9-11 (something like that), and that is better than those who thought that UC wouldn't win a single conference game.

However, improving does not mean that Cronin will make it to the level of a Huggs, Calipari, etc.

I hope he does, but so far the bottom line is that we just don't know yet.

Huggins never threatened you about writing a Blog so keep the stories coming. Write the book anyway. He never went after M. Perry.

I love Huggs and wish he were still here. That said, he is not here and is at WVU. I'm rooting hard for Mick and think he's doing a great job with what he inherited. I laugh at thise who will root for Huggs and WVU in order to "stick it to Zimpher"????

What the hell?

The King is dead. Long live the King!

GO UC!!!

It's obvious that by many of the comments on this blog site that some will defend Mick no matter what. The difference comes between supporting and defending. I support Mick, but I feel the jury is still out on him. The next two years will indicate if he is a upper level coach or an average one. This blog has already seen both opinions. Let's just wait and see, because the next two years will tell the REAL story, good or bad.

Huggins draws interest and a crowd, good and bad. The main interest in watching the UC/UWV game Wed is the MC/Hugs matchup.

There's little inteest in seeing this subpar UC BB team play basketball.

Yes...The jury IS out on Mick and the early returns are positive.

The fun about watching this team is watching them grow and improve. As a team and as individuals. Do I wish that they were 17-3 and ranked? Sure, but that isn't possible given the jumping off point that Mick had.

Forget Sullivan and his daughter. When will Art's son graduate from high school and will he eligible?

at 12:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dave in Omaha,

Hold tight to your Mick praises for two more years. Then we'll all be able to see the type of coach he is. I agree there was only one direction for UC BB to go after the BOT and Darth Z. blew up the BB team. Mick will have his recruits and his team in two years. And yes, the jury is still out. Let's hope the verdict in two years is a GREAT one. But we'll see...

Bill-
You are horrible...Why sit there and bash Huggs? Be professional, take the higher road...Don't be upset that he didn't like you as much as the other writers that covered him...All this on your blog about him is low...

What makes that story interesting is that Huggs was open enough with you to answer the question about the lease favorite sports writer. Was that question off of the record? If it was you should not print it. Sullivan is stupid.

Would Sully want his daughter these guys?
AKRON, Ohio (AP) - The son of a former Cleveland Cavaliers player, who prosecutors say used a survival tool that included a machete and a saw to kill his friend, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Former Xavier University player Andre Smith, 30, son of former Cavs forward Bingo Smith, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence as part of a plea deal and was sentenced Monday.
The family of the victim, 19-year-old Maxim Dudinov, said they wanted Smith to go to trial and receive a stiffer punishment.

1. Drew Lavender--possession of narcotics
2. C.J. Anderson--rape
3. De Jaun Rose--traffiking of illegal narcotics and selling drugs to minors (while ON STAFF as a high school teacher).
4. Dawn Rogers--inappropriate relations with the strength coach (hence the 1 year tenure).
5. Kenya Hunter--DUI
6. Phil Cox--DUI
7. Dedrick Finn--theft
8. Darnell Williams--DUI
9. Lloyd Price--armed robbery
2. 10. Andre Smith, Murder

I don't think Bill is attempting to bash Huggs. All he is doing is telling stories that if you actually imagine Huggs' voice and tone are hilarious. I was fortunate enough to work in the basketball office my senior year at UC and being around Huggs was great - do I think he would remember me - probably not, but his one liners were hialrious and his dry sense of humor was great. Telling Bob Huggins stories with a somewhat negative tone is perfect -after all, Huggs' personality is why this city loved him and he impacted lots of young men who had never had a positive male figure in their life. Evidence of that is the many players who are now productive members of the Cincinnati community - there are always 5-6 former guys at games as well.

I would love to go out drinking with Bob Huggins. He has a great personality and likes to have fun. Great basketball coach too. Who the hell would want to go drinking with Sippin Mick?

Oh Red, there you go again. Just bring your water sippin' bottle along and you could go drinkin' with Mickie...LOL

Bill,

I've been wondering if you and I have anything in common. Only one of us is a true UC fan. Then, it dawned on me. We do! Like it or not, we are STUCK with one another. OUCH!!!

What's your problem? Huggins was, and is a great coach. If he wanted you fired, he could have had it done. That's the way of the business. Just because he did something successful with his life doesn't mean you have to bash him.

What in the name of God are some of you reading?

Or can you read?

Bill never bashed Huggins. He told an anecdote. That's all.

But some of you interpret that as what? Having an axe to grind? Having an agenda?

Do you really think any major metropolitan newspaper would have such a reporter on the beat? Are you just completely insane or are you just living in a one-dimensional world?

Nuts. Absolutely nuts.

What I'm saying is that you shouldn't bash somebody for making a mistake. We've all said something like that, and have somebody correct us. It's not a big deal.

Huggins is not here anymore. I am as big of a UC fan as you can find. If I had the money, I would go to every game. We need to get over Huggins. I was there for his last home game. I was there at a Huggins rally. I'll always be a fan. That being said, Cronin is our coach, and that's who I want to read about.

OK, honestly, some of you are plainly morons.

The best description of Huggs would be "a complex man." Plenty of good about him, but also some damaging -- potentially fatal -- flaws. Loves to tell others what to do, hates to hear anyone tell him what needs to be done. Stubborn and determined, but also blind to the error of his ways.

He had the stuff of a great coach, but sadly he'll never achieve it because he can't sort out his own issues.

If I am a moron, and you are communicating with me then what does that say about you? I don't think that you are a moron but I get the feeling that your wife bosses you around. That makes you a wimpy guy.
FYI the 2 most over used words on blogs are idiot and moron. Don't call people names. OK wimpy

You my friend are a tool. Bob Huggins is one the best coaches of his generation and still has plenty of time ahead of him. Trust me when I say that I'm THRILLED that the only Huggins bashers in this city are incredibly jealous and bitter of how many people still love the man.

Get over it people. You should realize that Huggins is the man and Mick is following a legend and that is about impossible. Keep showing that bitterness guys. It proves the point of many Huggins supporters.

9:19, Please don't forget to thank some of the idiots of the BOT also. Nasty Nancy wouldn't have been able to do her dastardly deed without some support or approval from those knuckleheads!

at 10:14 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Aren't we the lucky ones? WVU has Huggins, Ole Miss has Kennedy and we've got Little Mickie!! GREAT!!!!! But, of course, we'll be back. Just you wait and see. Yeah right. Just you wait and see!!!! Oh, that's right, I'm living in the past when our BB team was respected.

Hey 10:10....

If NZ would have dumped the idiot when she should have, Huggins wouldn't have the sympathy he gets now. Sure, the people who thinks he walks on water would never change their minds, but she set the program back 7 years by getting into a peeing match with Huggins.

All over "power". She's no better than he is....

Thanks Nancy.....

at 1:03 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

12:41, I essentially agree with you. However, she couldn't have done anything without the approval, tacit or otherwise, of the septic BOT. Let's not let those imiciles off the hook in this matter.

Thanks BOT and Nancy for decimating UC BB!!!!

Why don't you people who can't get your heads out of your . . . past also do a back and forth about the Lincoln-Douglas debates. It has about the same relevance as the NEVERending crap about a basketball coach fired three years ago.

Here's a shock: Huggins Ain't Coming Back!

Move on.

Mick Cronin should change his name to Mick Yates. Let the 10 game losing streak begin!

Huggs will show Mick Yates how to coach and WVA beats UZ by 20 points or more.

Mick Cronin should change his name to Mick Yates and then adopt RickNmd.
