Great first half for the Cats! Too bad the game has two halves. Not only were they outscored the second half, but also outplayed and outcoached. That said, a few homer calls early on in the second half seemed to take the life out of the Bearcats tonight. And sadly, it went downhill from there.
Kenny Belton showed signs of Eric Hicks, Same body type, same freshman type game (Not a good jumper yet) same high school, same physical ability to get on the boards... I would love to see a starting 5 next year of Vaughn, Mitchell, Biggie, Williams, Belton/Gates
Wow, that was more like the old defense from Sippin' Mick's crew.
Good first half but the second half was a nightmare.
Although the team has still played much better overall lately, this loss was bad, even with ND's home streak.
If the team loses to a great Pittsburgh team Saturday, they will be back to .500 in the Big East and two under .500 overall, which will make even thoughts of the NIT start to seem less likely again.
Completely brutal. Its quite embarrassing to even admit that I watched the second half of the game.
Having been subjected to American Idol during commercial breaks, I started to wonder which was more sad: these losers that think they can sing or this team that teases its fans with hints of talent? And to think ESPN said that if we could beat ND we would have been "on the bubble" -- ha!
The Cats played very well in the first half and were obviously the better team despite some ridiculous calls. The first 5 minutes of the second half the calls of lack of them were worse than absurd. This disclosed why ND has the longest home winning streek in the nation despite being just a slightly better than average team over that stretch. I went to school with a couple guys that are now college level refs and whenver I see them I say how is the homer business? They just laugh and then remind me that long ago when they started out they explained to me that if they were not homers they didnt get any work and and they would never be able to work their way beyound the high school level and if they stopped being homers now they would stop getting work now. Belton looked very good as did the rest of the team. Life is what what it is.
Anon 1:34: Please spare us from your excuses about the refs -- UC got waxed in the 2nd half 64-40! Nice effort by the Cats in the 1st half. Also nice adjustment by ND to spread the floor in the 2nd half to negate the double teaming of Harangody. ND couldn't miss from the 3-point line. Blaming those (in your opinion) awful, biased refs is for losers. UC is finally showing some life, and against great competition. The Cats need to focus on continuing to improve, not on making BS excuses.
1st half was very good. 2nd half was lousy. Not completely unexpected with a young team. ND was coming off a poor showing and I'm sure got reamed at halftime and their experienced guys stepped up. UC was coming off of a win and feeling good. They probably felt pretty good at the half.
Lets hope that they learned a lesson. 40 minutes hard or they don't have a shot. Teams way better than UC have lost at ND in their place during the streak. I say the same thing that I did after the 'Nova game...patiience. It's a work in progress...
You sure are a BB genius. Don't you think it's possible that they both played terrible and got HOMERED in the second half??? This is a young team learning OJT and hopefully steadily improving. There are a few freshman out there good enough to carry a team, but they're only a small percentage. And most of them, if not all, will be one and done and off to the NBA. As for Mickie and his staff, the jury is still out and should be until the end of next year. At that point, there can be, nor should there be, ANY more excuses. GO BEARCATS!!!
I truely believe the bandwaggon fans want UC to continue to struggle just so they can have fuel for their fire. Anyone that bashes Mick because of this loss, has no knowledge of the game of basketball. If you watched the first half, you saw UC's gameplan work to perfection (especially on the defensive end). However, with inexperience, comes the ability to not focus - simply put, if UC listens to Mick and does what he asks, they win that game going away. The Big (B)East is to good of a conference to lose focus like UC did. I am an assistanct coach on a HS team in Cincinnati and there have been a few times this year when our boys have done the same thing - having patience with inexperience is impmortant. There will be nights like last Saturday and there will be nights like last night. AGAIN, if you can't grasp what Mick is doing, you need to go root for K-State, WV, or wherever else our former coach ends up next.
Woohoo!! Welcome back...again...to the whiners and crybabies!! Glad to see you have something to talk about still. In a year or so, you won't. enjoy while you can...then you can go back to your holes
Giving up 64 in a half reminds me of a decent defense I used to watch in Indiana...back in the old ABA days! Maybe Mick's new moniker might be "Slick" Mick in deference to Slick Leonard!
Dannyboy,in other words you're saying the good first half was all Cronin's doing and the second half is all the players.Or when they win it's Mick's genius, and of course when they go down it's all on the players.Yeah, okay.I got it now.
The gameplan by mick the m***** was excellent and carried out well in the first half.
the adjustments made by ND in the second half, and the lack of adjustment by UC, is the difference in the game. But to give up 64 points in a half is way more than 4 or 5 bad ref calls.
UC was not as disciplined on offfense the second half - and did not adjust defensively either.
Coach Mike Brey, in bill's article, was quoted as saying that UC tired in the second half. Tired players do tend to get more reaching and cheap fouls cause they aren't moving as well as they could.
all in all, UC played a tremendous first half, and a much worse second half. I don't like the other coaches saying UC got tired - I believe UC had 11 guys score in the game - which indicates a lot of subs were in and playing. If they tired with that many guys playing - they really are in bad physical conditiong - especially at game # 17 of the season. That is all of the coaches responsibility to have them ready to go. Is mick too soft on his guys?
Bill, Here's a perfect example of waiting for hours to see comments. It's 2:40 and the last comment visible is 11:46. Could we please have posting a little quicker. Thanks!! Bearcat Fans
Danny ... no one wants to see UC struggle like this. The second half was a mixture of poor coaching adjustments, poor play but mostly POOR OFFICIATING! You simply can not play when the officials are constantly blowing their whistles.
It been FOUR hours and there's absolutely nothing to read here. Where on earth is Josh when you need him. Oh yeah, he got pushed out of the door. And now we have a second? rate UC blog.
Bill, could we just strike a deal that the day after gamedays you will check this every hour? If you can't do it, get one of your blog partners to do it. Rotate days, I don't care, but this should happen. The day after the day after, no big deal, check it four times. But when there's stuff to discuss, you've got to be on top of this hourly.

They need to respond to this loss.

ND shoots 42 freethrows, UC shoots 11. Nice home court advantage.

Homers??
You do not know any college level refs.
UC gives up 64 points in the second half and they got Homered???
Proof positive that it is not against the law to be an idiot.
Back to reality boys.... ddon't worry we can still lose 20.
