ND aftermath
A few thoughts while driving down U.S. 31 on the way back from South Bend:
- There's no shame in losing at Notre Dame the way the Irish play at home, but when UC got up by eight points early in the second half it looked as if it might actually be on the way to ending that 30-game homecourt winning streak. But remember, no one has won there since the end of the 2005-06 season. What's important now is for the Bearcats to regroup for their next two road games vs. Pitt and UConn before heading back out on the road to Seton Hall and then the Huggins game at West Virginia.
- Still, Mick Cronin had the feeling, justified I think, that if UC had taken advantage of ND's offensive woes in the first half it would have been better positioned to withstand Harangody's onslaught in the second half.
"It was going to take a monumental effort for us to win here," Cronin said. "We were going to have to play a great game. I thought defensively in the first half we played a great game but we didn’t offensively. We should have been up 15 or 20 at half if we had shot the ball halfway decent. We’re shooting 2-footers in the paint and then we’re shooting wide open 3-point shots."
Adam H. continues to struggle to put the ball in the basket. He was 1-for-7 from the field and as Mick said, most, if not all, of those shots were within a few feet of the basket. He has to do better.
- Kenny Belton did a good job during his 13-minute stint. One of the interesting things about covering this team is watching the development of the freshmen, each of whom is progressing at his own pace. One day Alvin Mitchell seems to get it. The next day it's Kenny Belton or Anthony McClain. At some point, you have to think most of them will figure things out and become productive at the same time. That might not happen until next season, but when it does UC will be on its way.

Adam H would be so much better if he learned to just take the ball to the basket and bang away. He seems to get decent position for rebounds but offensivly he seems to be timid.
I agree with your comments about the frosh. Belton looked more mobile than this summer and showed an ability to bang. Adam IMO needs to gain a bit of confidence. If a couple of shots would fall, I think he would relax.
At some point Mick just has to tell Adam to stop shooting and pass it out to Vaughn. Since his last good game @NC State he is 5-24 for 15 points and his in game minutes have been slashed in half due to his slipping performance and the beginning emergence of McClain. I don't fault him for his effort but if you can't score hardly anything but freethrows just pass the ball!
IMHO Adam H. plays just as much like a freshman as the freshman do. The only reason he is starting is because he's a senior. Let's give Biggie the starts. He's going to keep improving and he IS our future starting center.
hey 5:17, kinda hard to play with 5 fouls in 6 minutes
Adam does not seem to understand board angles. seems impossible given all the bb he has played, but on his easy shots he puts the ball the wrong place on the board. maybe he should play some pool or something
Yeah, Biggie had 5 fouls in 5 minutes playing time according to the box score and Adam had 4 fouls. Adam said he had to back off Haragody in the second half. A couple of foul calls (or no calls) did make a big difference. One more call on Haragody and he would have fouled out. Good thing we have Belton. If Belton or Williams could bang into Haradogy while shooting, we might get the calls.....but maybe not. Maybe the South Bend refs would never put Luke Haradgody on the bench.
The bad news is that Luke is a Sophmore and we will see him again.
One more thing, nobody else said it, but I saw it. That stolen inbound pass by Ayers was the worst no call of the game. He pushed the Bearcat out of the way and took the pass. I saw it. Wish I had it on tape. About five minutes after the half. My heart sank when the refs did not call that one. I can't blame our guys. ND players claiming the Cats were tired in the second half is a lot of hooey.
UC is playing for the future. Adam H should be on the bench as a backup, if the starters get in foul trouble.
Adam H is not an inside scorer against Big East talent.
