Payback time

Mick Cronin rather gently chided me the other night in the post-game press conference when I mentioned that his team had already won as many Big East games this year as it did all last season, as if somehow it was a crime to mentoin that 2-14 season. But the fact is that the players themselves use what happened last year as motivation for this one. They think about it every time they walk onto the court to play a Big East team.

"Now it's payback," John Williamson said. "That's what we say about all the Big East games we play. It's payback time now. We're not the same team we were last year. We've got experience now."

Cronin acknowledged in talking with the media yesterday that last year was an experience his seniors will not soon forget. Nor should they.

"It was really rough for the kids to have to go through the experience they went through last year," he said. "It definitely hardened them. What doesn’t break you definitely makes you stronger and it's made them stronger players, stronger people. It's probably brought us all close together as a group. The new guys don’t quite understand it as much but they definitely feel it and sense it. We didn't feel like we were on equal ground no matter how hard we played. Because of our lack of size, we were up against it."

I couldn't agree more with Mick's comments. Once the basketball program is back on track (which shouldn't be too long), I think UC fans will look back at this class of seniors (Gentry, Williams, Sykes, Hrycaniuk, and Warren) and be grateful for their contribution to this program. They were all willing to come here under less than ideal circumstances and bust their tails for a coach they hardly knew. While I am looking forward to the future of the program (esp. next year), I can't wait to watch these seniors play the remainder of the season. If we as UC fans can't sell out any games this season, we ought to do our best to send these kids out with a huge crowd on senior day/night. They have definitely helped pave the way for the next chapter in UC Basketball's great history.

UC is starting to turn some heads, so I think that as they continue to win games it will help bring those 5,000 - 10,000 bandwagoners back into the arena. I am not harping on UC's bandwagoners, because all teams have them. It is just a shame that in this city there are so few "hardcore" fans.
Examples:
- Bengals have a so-so season and people hardly show up for games even though they are 'sold out'
- UC Bearcat football couldn't give away the tickets in the past, now they are hard to come by.
- Some Xavier fans were ready to jump off the wagon when they had their stuggle a few years ago, but got hot at just the right time and ended up in the elite eight. Otherwise, people would have been looking to get rid of Thad Matta.
- The Reds have stuggled with attendence, but if they put a decent team on the field... fans will jump back on.

It is in these tough times that you find out who the real fans are and who the fair-weather fans are. So I say to all UC fans, show up at the games whether they are winning or losing and just support your team!!!

fans are the same everywhere. Give them something to get excited about, and they'll be there.

Considering this team is no where near its proper postion, the Syracuse game drew more fans than a top 25 Xavier team. I wonder what the difference in attendance will be for these two teams for the balance of the season.
