A.J. Price made two free throws for UConn with 8.9 seconds left. UC got the ball to Vaughn, but his shot was blocked by Dyson. Marcus Sikes' 3-pointer from the right corner was no good at the final horn.
Bill - watched the game and thought it was the worst officiated game this year - on both sides of the ball. Would love a little more opinion on the blog rather than just game updates.
I did not get the game on TV. However, I listened to the big one. Chuck seemed to think that the officiating was terrible in the first half and then from about the 6 minute to 2 minute left in the second half. Said that the turnovers that UC had were a result of downright mugging by UConn. I know that Chuck is a little biased. Can anyone who whatched the game confirm?
This was a tough loss. This team has not learned how to turn a 10-12 point lead into a 20 point. Similar to the Saturday game against Pitt just a different outcome.
Mugging is putting it mildly. Guess Chuck didn't want to get tossed from a home game.
How about all the missed travelling calls. More steps than in an NBA game, again bad both ways.
That said..it was a tough loss. This team is worth watching again. We could have used better play out of the post guys (H and Biggie).. Both had off nights. 7-3 guys have a way of doing that to you. Too bad we didn't land that "biggie".
Gotta give some credit to who we're playing. We can't turn 10-12 point leads into 20 point leads because the opposition happens to be pretty good, not to mention a lot more loaded than this gutty little Bearcat team.
I would say that mugging would be an appropriate term.
I don't think it is neccesarily a lack of coaching on Mick's part, but a lack of experience on the overall team's part. We have to remember that this team is very young and haven't really been in this whole winning situation for very long. (I use the word winning loosely)
But regardless the Cats played hard and I still think they have a good shot at the Big East tourney and the NIT if they play well.
10:35, be smarter than that! Mick coached a hell of a game up against a Hall of Famer in Calhoun and still should have won that game. HORRIBLE officiating. I was at the game (as I am all...season tickets for 19 years now) and was disgusted. Jim Calhoun should be a damn politician the way he works those zebra's. Are you kidding?? Calhoun actually got outcoached. Calhoun had the luxuries of having a future NBA lottery pick at center and two All-American's running his backcourt. I must say those are the fastest guards I have seen to come into 5/3-Shoemaker. Crazy quick! Don't ask if Cronin can coach down the stretch. Dude was 64-1 at Murray State when he closed out games with a lead. Yeah, I know...it's the Big East. I get that. And so does he. Great play from the 'Cats. Proud to watch them and a great performance. Put it away and focus on Seton Hall.
don't start the ref thing - heard the same in the ND game. UC's style is physical - that is why they are being called for more fouls than opponents. in almost every game (it actually may be every game, need to look it up).
Bill - something to write about - the foul imbalance for the season?
uc second half defense lapses, ND, pitt, uconn.
and nova's loss to last place Rutgers takes a little wind out of that victory.
overall - tremendous improvement from beginning of the year - they need to have better second half endurance or focus -
Biggest thing about it wss the game was very very EXCITING. Who woulda thunk that after the first few games these guys would be leaving us glued to the tube and breathless for more?
Bishop made a frosh mistake, pretty dumb. But he also made the previous shot that kept them in the game and back in the lead. Talk about highs and lows. Painful loss, but these guys are such young pups they'll forget about it and move on quick.
Vaughn worked so hard to get open in the second half, running like a mad man to shake his guy, and it seemed to help him get in rythm. He's starting to play at the speed of big time basketball, and his shooting is beginning to fall in place. Williamson also is showing the experience and confidence of having a full season under his belt. Except for the turnovers in the last 3-4 minutes, UC played extremely well against a very talented team, with a 7-3 guy, no less.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the season. This team is loaded with talent. Mick can still bring home the bacon when it comes to recruiting. And he's coaching aggressively, trapping, switching defenses, and the kids are starting to get it. Amazing turnaround.
I don;t think he'll have Bishop guard the inbounds pass next time.
I didn't have time to watch or listen to the UC/UConn game.
Read Lance's comments. He wrote that Adam H was aweful. Is this true again? What did he do, miss 4 layups again?
Just following the critics, it sounds that UC is still undertalent but playing over their heads. While i'm not a MC fan that seems that MC is coaching the players up!
He had some silly godawful touch fouls, reach in,barely touching a guy, that kinda stuff. Seemed like they all were on lay ins where he should know better and back off. The last one looked like a phantom foul to me, and fouled him out. Having him gone the last 5 minutes hurt.
However, his fundamental soundness and unselfishness on offense were in full evidence again last night, too. He set great screens, made good passes, and helped free up guys for shots the entire game. I felt he played pretty good except for the fouls. He created a great three point play late in the game by throwing up a shot left handed as he was getting fouled. And he's still learning to play at this level, too, like his teammates, and let's not forget he was guarding a 7-3 guy.
Whoever Lance is...angry guy?..., he;s full of crap on this one.
I maintain that Bishop's foul with 9.8 seconds left was the best way to try and win. Without the foul, UConn would have come down and thrown it into the paint (like all night) and would have scored or been fouled. The UC would get the ball with only a second or two left. As it is, they had 9.8 seconds and got a good look at a last shot. It should not have come down to that, but don't blame Bishop for a dump foul at the end.
WOW! WHAT A BUNCH OF CRY BABIES! The officiating did not cost UC this game. Poor coaching, foul shooting and ball handling was the demise in a game that they could have won by 20.
Interesting thought, heard it bandied about re some of the NFL playoff games this year, but....
NO good coach in his right mind agrees with your strategy. Let your team play good defense, defend the ball vigorously; remember, the pressure is all on the offense in that situation, they're far more likely to make a mistake due to the ticking clock and game on the line. I feel pretty certain Bishop won't do that again...ever.
But I didn't like hearing him say he was held. He clealy impeded the guy's path and wrapped his arms around him. That comment does sound a little like crying to me. It was a rough game for both teams and the officials didn't have a good night either. But they didn't decide the game.
I'm not saying that I advocate that foul at that time, or that the coach called for it, but that it wasn't as dumb as all are making it to be. At that time out at 9.8 seconds, it didn't see how UC was going to keep UConn from scoring or shooting foul shots, or how we would have any time left to respond. I was surprised by the foul like everyone else, but saw a bright side. The last shot could have fallen!
2:43 - I'll take that as a compliment. And a proud season ticket holder. I invest the time, patience, and money into a program I support, a coach I support, and moreover the kids I support. Calhoun calling MC the BE Coach of The Year so far is a great compliment...but still only half way through. Execution was the problem last night, not coaching CHEVIOT SPORTS AUTHORITY (what the hell is that anyway...is Cheviot some breeding ground for freak athletes or talent that they need an "authority"?? Just curious.) Andy Katz mentions UC on his program today about teams outside possibly getting a look come selection time. He says "...and Cincinnati, with a tough loss to UConn last night, they are playing very well in the Big East versus how they were playing earlier. If they finish in the Top 6 of that league, do they take away something from a lower profile team..." Hey guys, this was the punchline to a joke last year, mentioning UC and Top 6 or NCAA Tourney in the same sentence. Lastly, some dolt mentioned Yancey Gates as "a project". Project? A top 25 recruit is a project? Actually, one of his high marks area, according to scouts is: "his ability to be an immediate impact player". Now, does that sound like a project? And how cold is that basement on nights like this...

Can Mick learn how to coach at the end of games?
Wretched defensive effort in the closing minutes. 22 points in less than six minutes? Bad ball handling and too many easy shots for UConn.
Big, big loss. 4-3 vs. 5-2 is huge, and now we have two road game we could very well lose to fall under .500 in the conference and to 9-12 overall.
Speaking of which...9-10 vs. 10-9 is huge. Might not even make the back of the NIT at this point.
Very disappointing.
I would say that mugging would be an appropriate term.

So go Cats!
A very awful mugging indeed.
It was great the way those refs literally sprinted into the locker room at the buzzer. It wasn't even a brisk jog.
So insane that we didn't shoot any FTs in the first half; even more insane that the Huskies made nearly all of theirs.
By the way, that foul of Bishops was unfortunate-- but in no way was it Mick's fault. Bishop knew what he did wrong, you could see it on his face.
I'm gonna be even more pissed if this brings back all the fair weather fan posters.
and Huggs wins again, tough night.

Blame it on the officiating ??
1) They sprint towards the locker room, because they are supposed to.
2) They did not miss three foul shot down the stretch.
3) They did not pick up their dribble in the corner near half court three times in a row, causing three straight turnovers.
4) They did not foul on an inbounds play at the end of the game.
This is what you get with this team.
Watch out for them in two years.....they'll finish these types of games....
12:07 - as good as Sippin' Mick's coaching has been at times, I'm not sure sure about some of his tactical moves and other decisions in this one.
And for as much as the team has improved, they are still a below .500, aka below average team so far on the year.
I wish they had reached the point they were WAY above average like Kennedy's high-powered offensive team, but they aren't there yet.
Reminder - Kennedy is not here. Huggins is not here. I don't care what either of them are doing.
Please quit whining like a bunch of 3 year old kids.
Sagarin, I think, says that home court advantage should be worth about 4.5 points. (I'm guessing it's much higher this year.)
In short, any win at home by 4 points or less is probably a loss on that team's home court. There are, of course, exceptions.
That's not to say the wins don't count, but it should factor in when one is considering the ranking of a team.
great effort - came up short.
