Vaughn vs. Logan

The first time I heard someone compare Deonta Vaughn to Steve Logan last year, I thought it was a ridiculous comparison. So did Vaughn, who smiled and shrugged off the comparison after saying that he had heard that many times before. Obviously, Vaughn isn’t in the same class with Logan, who, after all, was a first-team All-American in 2002 and ranks second on UC’s career scoring list with 1,985 points. For one thing, Vaughn is just a sophomore who hasn’t learned to get his shot whenever he wants it the way Logan did. Vaughn’s biggest problem has been that he hasn’t been aggressive enough in looking to score, but I sense that has started to change in recent games. And the more talent he has surrounding him during the next two years, the more scoring opportunities he’ll have. It’s interesting to note that Vaughn has already scored 686 points in his UC career. At the end of his sophomore year, Logan had scored 618 points. He averaged 17.6 as a junior and became a dominant player as a senior, averaging 22 points and scoring 770. Only Oscar Robertson scored more in one season in a UC uniform. Is Vaughn potentially good enough to have a season like the one Logan had as a senior? Is it ludicrous even to talk about Vaughn in the same conversation with Logan?

Vaughn is better now then when Logan was a soph and will end up being a better player as time goes on.

Steve Logan was the top player in the country his senior year. He simply could not miss. I like Vaughn but there is no way he can repeat the SENIOR year Logan had. He could do more throughout his career but not in one season, Logan had the eye of the tiger, refused to lose.

Logan should have his numbered hanging in the rafters by now!

i see the comparason - the have a similar build / game. don't get me wrong - vaughn has a LOT to accomplish before we say that he's an equally good player - i'm not saying that yet but he certainly looks like he's capeable of that too - in time.

It's a natural enough comparison to make, because physically they remind you so much of each other.

Vaughn has a ways to go before he can be qualified as quite as automatic as Logan was when he got an open perimeter look. Vaughn is a little bit more of a streak shooter, but when he is on, he's as good out there as Logan was. Vaughn also gets the edge in making something happen with penetration -- he's able to use that stocky body to great effect in making a little room so he can convert in traffic.

Logan, though, had better overall sense for the game. That, to me, is the aspect that has to come along for Vaughn to be considered a truly great college player. Sometimes Vaughn doesn't seem quite sure how to impose himself as a factor in the game, and that can't happen for a team that has to work as hard for points as this one does.

Vaughn's got a chance. Someone ought to dig out all the Logan video they can find and have Vaughn watch a couple hours per day of that during the upcoming off-season.

During his Sr. season, Steve Logan was the single most dominant player of the Huggins era. He completely controlled a game to the point of affecting the game outcome and did more than just score points...he won games. He took a group of average role players (Little, I. Macelroy, J. Davis, L. Stokes...w/ 1 guy off the bench-Max as a frosh) to a number 1 seed and top 5 ranking. Kenyon was nat'l player of the year, Fortson was a true man...but Logan as a Senior was a truly great player. No way Vaughn is that good.

Vaughn is inconsistent at times, but he is a very talented. As you mentioned, as the Bearcats continue to add talent and more scorers I think it'll help Vaughn. He seems to be a reluctant scorer at times, but he's probably understanding now that he has to force the issue a bit with the lack of offense on this team.

As far as the Steve Logan comparisons. It seems you're comparing the senior version Steve Logan with the sophmore version of Vaughn. Vaughn very well be better but we won't know till his junior or probably senior year.

I remember thinking Kenyon Martin was getting better in his junior year, but man he just exploded in his senior year. It happens quite a bit I think where some players are good players for 3 years and then transform into stars in their senior years.

Logan improved dramatically year to year, until his dominating Sr year. Logan was a slow pudge ball his freshman year.

Vaughn needs to learn to dribble, reduce turnovers, and shoot freethrows.

If Vaughn wants to be as good or better than Logan as college player, simple....prove it on the court.

After what this program has been through, it's nice to see he's got the potential to be on level with Logan. I can remember a lot of conversation during Logan's fresh and soph. year that he had trouble getting his shots.

Koch,

Why would you have thought the comparison was ridiculous? If you compare them at similar points in their respective careers and it's not a bad comparison at all. Were you comparing Vaughn's freshman year to Logan's senior year last year? That doesn't even make sense.

I think Vaughan will be better then logan by his senior year. Go Bearcats!!!

I was just talking about this tonight at the game - Vaughn has a lot to prove before it can be said he is as good as Logan. Logan had the mentality that he was going to kill you mentally and physically in a game. Huggs always said he would beat his own mother by 50 if given the chance. Vaughn is good and can be like Logan, but we need to wait and see what things look like two years from now. Also, I completely agree with ANON 3:43pm -Logan's # should have been retired on Senior day. He is second to Oscar in everything (that is better than Kenyon and Twyman).

I think Logan is by far a better player, even considering Vaughn's progress to this point. Vaughn will improve, no doubt, but can he show the balls of Logan?

If you look back at the teams Logan played on, he wasn't allowed to be 'the' guy until his senior year. But the potential was always there, just suppressed. Kenny Satterfield and DeMar Johnson had a lot to do with that. Kenyon Martin did too. Had Logan been allowed to do more than pass, he would have been unreal.

Yes, Logan's commitment to losing all that extra weight paid off his last couple years. But he really didn't have that much trouble imposing his will on defenders his first couple years when given the opportunity.

Go Vaughn! Go Bearcats!

Steve Logan was lights out. Someone else mentioned that Vaughn can create his own shot better than Logan could...that's simply not the case at all. Logan had phenomenal body control and was a master at coming off screen and getting open. Deonta is a great player but will never be as good as Steve was. Mick will be getting good players in here the next 2 years to compliment Vaugh nicely and Deonta will be a good #2 guard in the BE. A Steve Logan he will not be. A realistic projection for Vaughn his Sr. season would be about 13-15 pts. a game. No where near Steve.

As a fan I really hope Vaughn turns out to be as good as Logan, but they are different. Vaughn may very well pass Logan in all-time scoring, but Steve gave you a certain calm as a fan that he was the best player on the court and was so clutch. Whatever it took to score that is what he did.
I agree he was a totally different player his senior year, and if blogging was around Logan's soph. year nobody would have placed him as a top all-time scorer.

As this point in his career I still get a little nervous when Vaughn gets the ball in clutch situations, but Logan was ice water in the veins.
