Biggie McClain vs. Roy Hibbert

Biggie McClain played against Roy Hibbert in open gym in Washington while he was in high school and considers him a friend. Tomorrow he gets to go against him when it counts.

"I’ve been looking forward to this since I signed here,” McClain said. “He was one of the first ones I told when I committed here. He gave me some pointers on certain things to do.”

Through a lot of hard work, including improving his body and his footwork, Hibbert developed into the Big East pre-season player of the year. Does McClain have that kind of potential?
It's too early to tell, but it's worth comparing their statistics from their respective freshman seasons.

McClain has played in 23 games. He averages 10 minutes per game and scored 3.1 points per game with 3.2 rebounds and 22 blocked shots. He has not started a game this year.

As a freshman, Hibbert played in 32 games, starting 17, and averaged 15.8 minutes per game. He averaged 5.1 points and 3.5 rebounds with 50 blocked shots. As a sophomore, he improved to 11.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 54 blocked shots.

To be fair, McClain has been hampered by bone spurs in his foot which has really slowed his progress this year.

Nothing to need to be fair about even. His per minute averages for points and blocks are almost exactly the same and his averages for rebounds are better. Just look and hope for the same kind of progression from McClain in the coming years.

Oh, I like the comparison. Biggie definitely reminds me of Hibbert...slow and big. But if Biggie keeps working on his game 15 feet and in then he can be as good if not better than Hibbert. Time will tell.

Play Biggie and bench Adam H. Otherwise, UC loses by 20 to Georgetown.

McClain seems more athletic to me, and I think he has the potential to be a better defensive player and rebounder. Hibbert is dangerous with the ball in his hands- he can pass and he can score with a variety of moves. McClain has a lot of work to do to catch him in that area.

Hibbert is a great example of what hard work can do for a college basketball player = turn him into a lottery pick. He has done nothing but improved over his college career.

I really like Biggie. He will pack on some muscle and hopefully dominate the paint soon. He is tall and doesnt weigh much and he plays tentative, but he's a freshman so I am not concerned.

Out of six comments - of course there is an anti-Adam post. Have you not watched the man play defense? That's why he's in there. McClain is still a freshman w/ mobility problems due to his foot.

Oh wait, CRONIN - you're an idiot. Play all the freshman so they can get experience for next year. Recruit better. Make the players shoot better. Be even more like Bob Huggins. ugh. Will the haters still be haters in the coming years, or will they once again be life long fans?

Let's go bearcats - big game tomorrow.

If McClain started against G'town, how many minutes into the game until he fouls out? I'd say 10.

McClain is raw and needs a lot of work. He'll get there, but not this year.

You're correct, of course, Don. There simply is no excuse for only one!

AdamH's defensive game the other night was excellent. Biggie should get his minutes, but if Hibbert starts scoring, Adam will have to be in there.

It would be fun to see friends play each other man on man for about 5 minutes. Just for the heck of it. And that might be why Hibbert does not get into a scoring groove...because someone who knows his moves is on him.

OK first of all, I'm all for getting Biggie his minutes. But let's not forget that Biggie fouled out in 5 minutes of play against Notre Dame. In that game he was guarding Harangody. So putting him up against another viable Big East Player of the Year (and All-American) candidate could spell the same results. Adam H is WAY more disciplined of a defensive player than Biggie, and in this game we will stand our best chance if either of them has fouls to give in the stretch run of the second half. But it harkens back memories to a freshman version of Kenyon Martin. The only thing bigger than his name is his potential.

biggie needs to sit the bench the whole game. he doesnt know what he's doing. adam H trys hard and gives it all hes got. who cares if he doesnt score, thats why we got other players. adam h is the man!!!!!

biggie needs to sit the bench. he's clueless on the court and looks like a little boy out there. adam H knows his role and we are winning with him. he doesnt need to score points, hes all about solid D and rebounds. adam h is the man!!!!!

Biggie will get a chance tomorrow, but Adam will have more minutes. Watch them both on defense and make up your own mind. I hope on Senior Day that the people that booed and said their booing was at Cronin for putting Adam in, will clap for Adam. We needed him this year and especially tomorrow.

Adam H is not be half the player Biggie will be in a couple of years. As of right now though, Biggie (for several reasons) cannot stay on the court long enough to push Adam out of the way. You clueless oafs can continue to knock Adam all you want, but the fact remains that we need him and would not be where we are without him. Right now, Adam is better than Biggie. In spurts, Biggie is better but cannot sustain...

Bearcat in Atlanta,

Just to put your mind at ease. Don't worry about anyone not clapping for Adam H. on Senior Night. The few Mick and Adam lovers in the crowd will clap in appreciation. The rest of us will clap even louder because he's a Senior!

biggie certainly has the frame and the credentials. i liked what uc did developement-wise with fortson, kenyon, maxielle, and hicks (lots of lean muscle and conditioning). if biggie is kind enough to stay around, theres a great chance of him being on numerous sportscenters in the coming years.

adam will be gone next year, why dont all the adam groupies make yourselves a deal and talk about him then when it will make as much sense to do as it does now

lets go bearcats!

Bearcat in Atlanta,
The main criterion for a college player receiving applause from the fans should be -- Did he try his utmost to get the most out of his God-given ability?
I, like you, appreciate his efforts to help UC win. Offensively challenged, yes. Makes you cringe sometimes. But the effort and hustle he puts forth on the court are exactly what we teach our kids who play sports to do!
Adam H. should be ADMIRED for that -- not ridiculed for not having the gifts that others have been blessed with.

ADAM H IS A STIFF.

SHIP HIM BACK TO POLAND AND PLAY BIGGIE MCCLAIN THE REST OF THE SEASON.

Anon 3:23,

Don't forget that Adam H. was recruited by Mick and there are a few bloggers who feel that Mick is the greatest and just can do know wrong. They are the charter members of the "We Love Mick No Matter What' Fan Club and defend him on all issues. I have a good question for them though. How can someone almost SEVEN feet tall miss layups on a consistent basis and still be called a BB player??
