Getting started

As most of you probably know I've been covering UC athletics for the better part of 20 years, but when it comes to blogging, well, this is all new to me. I've already been told by a lot of you before ever posting anything that I have big shoes to fill as I follow Josh and Trent. I understand that. I'll miss Josh, too. He was a talented writer, a solid reporter and a good guy to have dinner and a few beers with on the road. All I can say is that I promise to do the best job with this blog that I can. It might take me awhile to get used to the rhythm of blogging, but hopefully before long you'll be able to come here with confidence that you'll find the information you're looking for about UC, just as you did with Josh. I'm looking forward to trying something new.

Glad to see you picked this up, Bill. I've been a big fan of Josh, so I hope we see the continuation of his personal touch.

Welcome aboard.

Bill, here are a couple of serious questions: You have the reputation, and I think much deserved, for being as cynical as a reporter could possibly be in terms of covering your beat. You have given the distinct impression over your years of covering UC athletics that you see the program in a negative light, and it has always appeared as though you have had some kind of agenda against UC's aspirations to grow as a program. This has included much of this cynical/negative opinion embedded in stories that were supposed to be pure reporting.

Why have you conducted yourself and your reporting in this way? And please don't deny that this is how your work is viewed, because everyone in town knows that this is how you have always come across.

Will this blog be used for much of the same? Keep in mind that anyone who would visit a UC blog is pretty much a UC supporter, so it would be odd for you to use this forum for continued cynicism of the program -- but it would also be unlike you to refrain from doing that.

What should we expect here, honestly?

I couldn't agree with 9:24 more. From the big pre-season story about how moving to the Big East has hurt UC more than it's helped it to splashing a sex-tape story, based on an anonymous letter, on the front page of the paper, you have always seemed to enjoy highlighting the negative where UC is concerned. I'm sure you think this is "just the facts ma'am" reporting, but the negative slant is just a little bit too obvious.

I'd like to see you repond to 9:24's comments.

A new UC blog! Finding this has just helped my new years hangover feel a little better. I used to check Josh's blog multiple times a day, so I'm excited you picked it up. Look forward to reading your stuff.

Bill did you ever find the UC football team sex DVD? You reported, with zero sources, that some UC football players, recruits, some girl (former soccer player) had a little private party and recorded it. You went with the story but you had no eveidence that this happened. I think many UC fans and Alumni are looking for a an answer here.

9:24,

I don't view Koch's writing as being negative toward UC. In fact his coverage of UC football this year was outstanding. His support for the basketball program this year tries as hard as it can to be positive. Given that we're in the cellar right now, I'd say that Koch has put a POSITIVE spin on things whenever he could.

So, when you tell him everyone thinks he's negative, then I know at least one guy who doesn't. Me.

I think it's a blogger's responsibility to be approachable, but I don't think it's his job to be my daddy.

Here is what to expect:

Koch lost any remaining credibility when he wrote the front page story about UC football players - recruits, underage drinking and the sex video. He had an anonymous source and the "anon" letter on UC letterhead (that anybody could copy) suggesting that there was a coverup within the athletic department. He had zero evidence. This so called professional broke every rule in the newspaper business.

1:12 is Bill Koch. He does not have the marbles to respond to any of these questions.
