There are also academic incentives: $5,000 if team GPA exceeds 2.75; $10,000 if it exceeds 3.0; $10,000 if graduation rate is 75 percent; $10,000 for each year team exceeds the APR minimum standard set by the NCAA.

If either deadline is missed the buyout figure is reduced by half until the later of Jan. 15, 2010 or the date on which the practice fields and the indoor facility become available.

Once again, all this money but no votes for Coach of the Year in Ohio from his peers. There can only be one of two reasons for this:
1. It's cause he's not from Ohio (most of these coaches on the list are)
2. He really rubs people (his peers) the wrong way.

Really makes you wonder about him personally at least it does for me since I know some of the guys on this list personally and I can't see how he could be snubbed like this 9-3 in the Second Best Conference in the Nation and no votes? Unbelievable.

As we've seen, contracts mean little....Still, the University is trying it's best to keep Kelly happy and in the fold. He deserved it.

I think this announcement on the eve of the Cronin/Huggins matchup gives some idea how a win by Cronin against WVU could be worth a lot, and how a loss could hurt pretty bad.

1. On the positive side, Cronin really silences the critics if he beats Huggins tomorrow night. It helps his credibility, his recruiting, and his status at the university.

2. On the negative side, a Cronin loss to Huggins tonight is a moment in time but it also says, Huggins wins. If it's a blowout, then it's an even stronger confirmation against Cronin.

Coupled with Kelly's contract and Kelly's ability, it pushes everyone in the direction of football. And face it, the Big East is far more valuable to Cincy as a football conference than it is as a basketball conference. (Memphis proves that with its strong ranking out of Conference USA.)

Add this to the publicity surrounding a Huggins/UC rematch, and think recruiting. The two schools are in the same recruiting region in the SAME league. A Huggins win on the court could cause every recruit to consider: Why not go to the winner?

Bottom line: Cronin is helped big time by a win over Huggins. He's hurt by a loss. He's injured badly by a WVU blowout.

12:42, I pretty much agree with the recruiting aspect. However, did you really believe that the timing of the contract was anything more than incidental? Nancy is hardly anywhere near that savvy. Of course, someone may have whispered in her ear. Oh, Yuck!

There had to be some technicality in that Columbus Dispatch vote. There's no way with the number of coaches voting that the Big East Coach of the Year gets zero mention on any ballot.

My guess is it might involve being a member of an Ohio coaches association of some sort.

Good lord, the Ohio coaches vote thing means absolutely nothing in the big picture. Who cares? It's a vote. So what if other coaches don't like him? Boo-hoo. What if they like him? Yay.

Now how does any of this matter one way or the other for UC recruiting or game planning?

Zero.

Cronin vs. Huggins? Only the locals care and that's fine. It has little periphery affect. If a kid is hedging one way or the other based on the result of one game, well, that's dumber than the kid himself.

And everybody knows UC is rebuilding and Huggins inherited some pretty good parts from John Beilein. WVU is better than UC. That's no secret. A year from now, two years from now, 10 years from now, the result of the game will mean absolutely nothing about either coach, either program or its direction.

It's just another game--with some interesting emotion attached. It'll be done and over with by this weekend.

Except by the Huggins lovers, who can't move forward in their lives.

12:51 there apparently was a mistake in voting. The guy who tabulated the votes combined Mike Kelly and Brian Kelly's votes, giving them all to Mike. Supposedly, they're going to re-run the results.

What happened to the Mick Cronin "Coach of The Year" campaign?

I'm glad that finally got done. That's been lingering since before the bowl game. I hope he sticks around, but 2012 is coming fast.

He's not risking a lot of cash on team GPA is he?

at 2:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Don't make light of the GPA issue. UC ranked second Nationally!! behind Boston College in team GPA for the 2007 acadmic year. Way to go Cats!!

You hacks who jump on here without any facts or knowledge of the situation are an embarrassment!!

at 2:44 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

2:38, you need to read the article.

Team GPA is worth 10,000 bucks for an entire year.

He gets more than that for less than a half-full stadium for ONE GAME.

So give me a break and take time to read the article.

In short, he's not risking much cash on team GPA.

What the heck does this have to do with the basketball game tomorrow night at WVU? NOTHING!

Mick inherited a program with one scholarship player! ONE! A total mess he did a great job of patching up for a few years until they get some momentum and normalcy back.

And yes, who really cares about Ohio coach of the year votes? I doubt even Brian Kelly does. Frankly I've never even heard of it.

Move forward Cincinnatians, evolve, progress, I know it's hard - but you can do it.

If I were the AD, I'd offer BK a huge cash bonus for every GCL all-stater he signs to a letter of intent, and then go spend that money somewhere else.

Someone at the Enquirer needs to think before they publish headlines. Online the headline reads "Kelly's Contract Released". That suggests, at first glance, that for some God only knows reason, Brian Kelley was released from his contract (aka FIRED!) You can see why my heart stopped for a second. Congrats to coach Kelley and UC. This is good for everyone and will ensure a very successful football program. I am happy to see this happen.

Mr. Koch,
I read the average attendance targets and bonus clauses.
I read about practice facilities.
I did not read anything about expanding Nippert or including the option of playing at PBS. Is this issue addressed? I was hoping a commitment to providing a larger game venue.

FYI from Lance's blog....

>>>Things I'm told: Brian Kelly DID get votes

Yesterday I talked about the Ohio College Coach Of The Year voting that ran in the Columbus Dispatch Sunday. The voting was done by all college coaches in Ohio. 38 ballots were sent out. 31 coaches voted. 12 different coaches got a vote...a first, second or third place vote. Jim Tressell won the award. UC coach Brian Kelly did not get a single vote.
Wednesday The Columbus Dispatch will reveal a mistake made in tabulating the voting. Mark Znidar, of The Dispatch combined the votes for Brian Kelly with Dayton Coach Mike Kelly by accident and gave all the votes to Mike Kelly.
As a result, Mike Kelly finished second in their voting.<<<

nice.

Congratulation to Coach Kelly, Mike Thomas and the football team.

FYI if UC loses to WVU that won't affect recruiting at all. It doesn't come down to 1 game, it is about the program, the coach, the campus, the city etc.

The only people BK rubs the wrong way are scared OSU fans. As well I am not concerned about expanding Nippert right now. UC needs to sellout every home game next year, then the following year etc. When Oklahoma comes to town that game is at PBS.

What country club did he receive a membership to?? I didn't realize he was a golfer.

11:57 must be a to$u or x fan to be that dumb. If you've ever talked with Coach Kelly (and yes I have) you will discover he's focused but friendly.

Seriously, with dangtonia trying to steal our recruits do you really think it pays to be overly lovey-dovey? Get real.

I for one plan to help in the way of the $50,000 attendance incentive by being one of the 27,501-32,000.

Guys like you are only on here to vent your sad spleen about your pathetic, mom's-basement-dwelling life. *yawn*

What? No incentive for winning a National Championship?? Dare to dream...

at 6:25 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Another UC Blog and another group of O$U/x fan with alot of wishful thinking.

The Dispatch incorrectly counted the votes. They are going to re-release them with Kelly receiving votes. However, who really cares what a bunch of Ohio DIII coaches think about DI coaches.

The UC/WVU matchup will have absolutely no bearing on recruiting. The Huggs story is a big deal to the media and a small minority of fans, mostly from x. The rest of the Big East looks at this as just another game.

More positive UC news and more haters on here. Take your shots. I know it makes you feel better.

With this good news, alot of O$U shills gritting their teeth tonight.

Once again UC.. The Football Team of the City of Cincinnati. Go Cats

Country Club? Huggins used to belong to Hyde Park. I played behind him a couple of times- he was a nice guy on the course, and a terrible golfer (as am I).

If BK hits all of the bells, he will be getting 1.5 million a year- not bad at all. And if he hits all the bells? Well, then he deserves every penny of it!

This is a test.

(Sorry for the "test." For some reason, this site accepts my posts at times and at other times does not.)

I just went to a public UCATS meeting last night and I am convinced that UC has a plan that will lead to consistent success in Men's Football and Basketball. It all comes down to $$$$(surprised?) and they will be raising a lot more of it. Minimum amounts for most UCATS club levels will be increased, as well as ticket prices. Some "old farts" will whine, squeal, and drop their tickets, leaving them open for others (namely, like me) who would love to sit in the lower level for basketball. This potential opening up of seats is a once in a decade opportunity. It won't happen again until the Shoe is redesigned or a replacement is built. When UC makes the NCAA next year and is a consistent Top 25 team starting in 2 years, people are going to be willing to give their left gonad for these tickets.

And football? With Brian Kelley as the coach? In the Big East? In a few years, you will have to give a UCATS contribution to get preferred tickets at Nippert, as well.

I dropped my Bengals tickets 14 years ago and got UC season tickets and joined UCATS. It was by far the best "sports" decision that I have made. Unlike the Bengals, UC is committed to winning. (Isn't it just a bit embarrassing, that UC will have an indoor practice facility before the Bungals?)

Buy your tickets now. Get your seat at the show. The Bandwagon Express in leaving town.

Can someone clear up: Are they trying to make Nippert an inclosed stadium?

no, they would put a practice bubble over the stadium in the winter and take it down in the spring
