For Vaughn, should I shoot or should I pass?

Deonta Vaughn must get confused at times about what he's supposed to do. Mick Cronin wants him to shoot more, but he doesn't want him to force anything, like Cronin felt he did at times against Notre Dame the other night. The bottom line is that Vaughn has been and will continue to be the focus of every opponent's defense. He's still trying to figure out whether to look for his shot or feed his teammates, none of whom is as proficient as he is at putting the ball in the basket.

"My challenging him to be aggressive doesn't mean just shoot," Cronin said. "He's got to force peole to take him away and in doing so they’re leaving somebody else open."

And when that happens, someone else has to make a shot.

The good thing about Vaughn is that even though he's only a sophomore, he has embraced the leadership role that has been forced upon him and is willing to accept the blame when things don't go well, even if he doesn't always deserve it.

the question implies that vaughn is the point. he is not and should not be. so the answer is simple, when he gets the ball and he is open,he should shoot. let it go! now if he is not open and time is running out he should penetrate and DISH! how many times do you see vaughn Dish after he penetrates? this seems to be his only weakness offensively. a couple years ago both kennedy and hicks had a difficult time getting the then point to dish after he penetrated the defence, an individual who once he learned was pretty good at it. cant remember his name but his initials were dd. again let me repeat, dv is not the point because he does not do it as well as warren and if he was it would make it too easy for the opposition to pressure our offence, they would need to pressure just one guy.

Vaughn is the only scorer on the team today. next year hopefully there are more scorers on the team.

Vaughn is a streaky shooter. He needs to avoid forcing his shot if he is shooting poorly for the nite.

Only the all-stars can force their shots and still be productive. Vaughn does not have the physical skills for force his shot and make it consistantly. He is too small, does not have a quick shot, and does not have a good shooter's ball rotation for a soft shot.

Vaughn doesn't have a strong supporting cast, and I can see why "pass or shoot?" is a dilemma for him. The last few games he has stepped up his scoring aggressiveness, but sometimes he needs to learn when to hold it in check.

Easy to talk about, not always so easy to do.

UC needs to keep the game close in order to win. Over the past several games and in the first half of the ND game, they have done an admirable job of that. Not so in the last half of basketball they played- so Vaughn had to force it because no one else was going to score.

Bottom line is: Vaughn is getting better this year. I expect him to continue to improve and in his junior and senior seasons I expect him to be a very well-rounded and savvy player.

Vaughn is going to be a good one. But he can not be a one man show. However, right now nobody else is stepping up every night.

Who is he going to dish to if he does penetrate, Big bad H?
