Mick Cronin after the game
Here are some quick hits from Mick Cronin after the game.
"It's not last year when the Bearcats were rolling in playing football players and five guys who were thrown together at the end of the season. Those days are over. Where we will finish in the Big East, I don't know, but we're competitive.
"The days of us having to come up with tricky game plans in the Big East because we’re playing a 6-6 guy in Marcus Sikes at center are over and then subbing in a tight end. He’s home with his parents enjoying the holidays where he should be instead of me asking him to stop David Padgett in the post like I was last year."
On finally having some concrete evidence of UC's rebuilding to show the fans:
"I understand the mentality of our fans. I truly do. They pay money for tickets. They love their team. They want you to win now. So it's nice to see that it's going to happen. Now are we going to run the table in the Big East? No, but we’re competitive.
"The one thing that I remind myself of constantly with everything that I've been through since I got here is that our fans have been through it even longer with all the uncertaintly around the program. It's been tough rebuilding for me. But for our fans it started before that. It started when coach Huggins left."

Today's win presents an interesting moment for the Huggins holdouts crowd that just want to bitch and moan about anything related to UC basketball -- the defensive effort by UC down there today was of the caliber that Huggs' best teams would produce when they won their biggest games.
Those folks ought to be able to acknowledge that and appreciate it, but somehow I doubt they will.
at least for today...#1 in the BEAST BABY!
Big time win for UC...even though L-ville may be a bit down. 1-0 in the BE!
couldn't be happier for Mick and this team. It's good to watch some actually wins. Thanks for starting this blog.
Digging a win out like this is great great great.
We don't know what's going to happen the rest of the season, but this is cool.
josh, if your reading this...post an entry and let us know what your up to! we miss hearing about your food choices and flight delays!
Mick haters...where are you?
Hello, anybody out there? Where are all of the postings? Josh would have had 50 response postings by now.
EXCELLENT win on the road at Freedom Hall. Not an easy venue to pull out a win. Kudos to Mick and the players for the intestinal fortitude with 4.8 left to seal that (along with some rim goblins...that was luck that Williams' tip-in didn't fall).
From future Hall of Famer Pitino on Mick Cronin:
"I told Mick to stay patient because he has a very good basketball team this year, plays a tough schedule," Pitino said.
"I said, 'Stay patient, when you get your first recruiting class into its junior year that's when you make great strides. Until then, you can't make big strides right away because you're in the Big East. If this was Conference USA, you could make bigger strides, but when you're in the Big East it takes time because the competition is so fierce that you have to be very patient.' "
I have been saying this to all the jack's who are ready to yank Cronin from the sidelines. When Vaughn is a senior and Yancey Gates is a sophmore along with Cashmere Wright...Alvin Mitchell and Anthony McClain and Rashad Bishop are juniors, this team will be a Top 20 team. BE PATIENT FOLKS! Today was step number one!
Congrats Cats...
Let's hear it for the rookie blog expert! (Insert cheering here)
Nice job Bill. Keep up the great work. You have made my new year by agreeing to continue a UC blog and be there for us UC Fans.
GO BEARCATS!
P.S. - Yeah, if you could give the time and stuff...still, THANKS!
I guess at the speed of getting comments posted, I will only need to check out this site once every other day. I can not believe that there are only 5 comments to MC's post game quotes.
No answers to the questions posted in reponse to your "Getting Started" post? Josh and Trent knew how to interact with the visitors to their respective blogs... Can Cincinnati's preeminent yellow journalist do the same?
Oh, and by the way, USF was a total embarrassment to the Big East. I am sure that the Sun Bowl selection committee is real happy with their selection. Does anybody know what the attendance was and how many USF fans were there to witness the massacre?
Go figure to select a team that UC beat head to head and finished higher in the BE standings. Oh, that is right, the committee was afraid that they would have to take Oregon State and did not want a rematch.
The bowl system makes me want to puke.
Anon 6:08....hard to admit witness to something we didn't watch.
I have to admit I will miss Josh's blog and his reporting ability. But, I will give this blog and its author a chance despite the fact that, with the exception of this past fall when I found the Enquirer's coverage of UC athletics to be "OK," I think that the Enquirer's coverage of UC athletics for the last twenty years has ranged from bad to really, really bad.
and in the world of college football...
LOL Hawaii
Great, great win!!! I loved it.
The Ville is having a tough year, but I applaud our Bearcats' efforts on defense. The offense still makes me pull me hair out. Make a layup for goodness sake!
Bill... thanks for the in-game updates! Some of us without ESPNU really do appreciate it. One suggestion... the content is fine, but the way you're heading and organizing the posts around the game flow a little slow (not in frequency, rather reading). If you have an opportunity to read some of Josh's old game blogs you'll see his comments and highlights are very short and quick. No grammar here to follow, but you really got a good sense of the game and key plays. His headers worked too (First Half, Second Half, Post game). Thanks. I'm back to the peanut gallery.
to Anonymous at 1:11 AM... the game was on the standard ESPN channel, not ESPNU...
Great win for the 'Cats today... Bill... any word on recruiting news for the filling out of the '08 class?...
Appreciate you keeping this forum up.I't was a good win and they are improving. If Cronin just coaches and learns not to moan and denigrate the players he has on hand it will be a huge step forward.Seems like he has lately.Just wish all the couch potatoes who couldn't dribble with three hands would get off Adam's back.He is a rookie for all intents and purposes and has done pretty well given his lack of experience.Sounds like all the morons who said Vaughn would never be a player.Again, thanks!KATFAN
"We came here to put our feet down, and that's what we did," said senior guard Jamual Warren. "We put our right one down in the first half, and in the second half we put our left one down.
"We're going to stand our ground. We took a lot of beatings last year and we want to let people know that we're not going for that. We're a new team and this is what we're about. We're about Bearcat basketball."
I love how Warren talks with such bravado. It's been a while since we have had a UC player talk with such gusto. I was skeptical when Cronin was bemoaning the loss of Warren early on in the season, but he is right; Warren is not only the leader of the team, but he also sets the tone for the Cats on both ends of the floor.
ESPNU? The game was on ESPN.
Good win for UC. Maybe we make it to the Big East tournament after all. Still, the Big East is going to be tough this year. One game done and 17, did I say 17, Big East games to go. Ouch
great game, feels so nice to down the cards. bearcats are absolutely on the upswing with a good future.
i do want to say to mr koch...please sir, we watch the games to find out whats happening. josh k had a great uc blog going because he dropped inside info and funny stories about the players, coaches, and experiences associated with uc sports. call me gentile, but i think ur blog should focus around how the system of athletics is working and what kind of people are in clifton making sure that uc is a vibrant sports town once more. simply telling us quotes that are in the paper next morning and whats happening in the games isnt going to keep you this job as a blogster in the long run. i realize your new at it, and i look forward to your posts as well as a strong conferance run by the bearcats
As an early season Cronin doubter, I made my apologies with the XU game, because only the blind could deny the progress they were making. Memphis showed more of the same. Miami was absolutely hopeful, and this Louisville win seals the deal.
First, they won't be winless in the Big East this year. Second, the younger players are the heart of the team. Third, Cronin is doing the right thing and coaching the right thing.
By way of progress, they're still sloppy. As someone else mentioned, the offense seems slow to create openings and to shoot when they get them. I noticed on the Memphis game the number of missed, uncontested open shots when they do get a break.
All in all....Cronin, Koch, Katzowitz, Daugherty, and Dow were right. I was wrong.
For what it's worth, the strength of the A10 is real or they get incredible homecourt advantages in the neighborhood of 25+ points.
One win does not make a season. It is the right step and at a very much needed time. I hope we just keep moving up from here. With a few more marquet wins and 10 more wins, we may make the NIT. Well, one still needs to dream.
Welcome to the "dark side" Bill, you'll have fun dealing with the assorted personalities that fill space on this blog.
As for the 'Cats win at l-ville, it was a major step back to restoring the program.
Usually Christmas break is when freshmen quit being freshmen. I'm seeing some positive signs with this group.
Mick's getting better minutes out of Bishop and McClain. You can tell McClain never had to get off his feet against HS competition, but now is a good time for him to learn a little "verticality".
Mac will get more playing time as Adam H continues toward setting the NCAA record for most missed shots within 2 feet of the basket by a 6-10 guy. (Record currently held by Mike Reickenecker, 1990)
Keep up the good work, Bill. I am sure that you will find your blogging voice quickly.
Josh did a nice job, but he too got off to a very rocky start--remember his preoccupation with first press box food, then Ron Allen?
I for one appreciate the journalistic approach you take in covering UC sports. We can count on the SID to deliver all the good news, you will locate the harder to find information I am certain.
Great win. The kids are actually putting forth the effort needed and expected at this level of competition. I thought this season was going to be a repeat of last year's butt kickings. Great job Mickey Mouse Cronin....Hats off to ya.
A gratifying win. Soon, most will be saying what I've been saying since August of 2005..."Bob WHO?"
Congrats, Mick. Keep up the improvement.
Great win, Although #45 needs to learn how to shoot. all game he was in the paint, he would get a pass or drop it! turn and shoot 1 foot short from 3 feet away!I don't know how many passes he dropped but it was more then he caught.
I've always had faith in Old saint Mick, being known as one of the best recruiters out there we knew it would take some time. Ever since the XU game these freshman have impressed me. If we can start putting up some decent point totals, we can show some presence in the BIG East. I had a question about the Big East Tourney, this year it will be everyone invited to the Tourney and not just the top 12, am I correct on this or does it take effect next year or later?
They won one game to a crappy Louisville team. UC still sucks
Cronin has done a great job coaching, but the Bearcat's improved effort on the court should be attributed to Warren. The bearcats have been a completely different team since his return. They've played with greater effort, passion and increased physicality.
Personally, it's great to see rival teams leave Clifton sore and bruised. The Cats are back!

Top 12 this season, everyone starting next season.
First of all L'ville at full strength? Come on now, it was Padgett's first game back from a broken patella. This was a great win for UC and I'm excited that they won't go 0-18 in the B-East this year. They have made some progress, but please be realistic. They beat a bad L'ville team. It's still going to be a struggle to hit 10 wins this year. If they surpass it. I've got my humble pie in the oven waiting and i'll happily eat it.
get on the bandwagon now (UC) fans, the train is finally pulling out of the station. this team will compete in the big east this year. check the # of 3 pointers made versus the opponents team and you'll be able tell the outcome of the game without watching or listening..
"the defensive effort by UC down there today was of the caliber that Huggs' best teams would produce when they won their biggest games."
Can you share the drugs that you are doing to even suggest this? The best teams Huggs put out there? Please stop kidding yourself. The D effort is getting better, but the guards are still getting to the basket too easily. Like Pitino said in his news confrence. His team didn't look at the scouting report. If they would have paid attention, they would have drove the ball instead of settling for jump shots.
Any objective basketball fan could see it coming with the Memphis game and the Miami win. The Bearcats are a fun and scrappy team that's gonna surprise more than just Louisville this season. Let's hear it for the players and for Coach Cronin. Great effort!
Nice win, but the Big East tourney still a year away !
