Jamual Warren

Too many times I think college athletes - especially basketball players - take for granted the opportunity they have to play college athletics and receive a free education. So it's refreshing to come across a player like Jamual Warren, who really seems grateful for the chance he's had at UC. I remember when Jamual signed with UC he told me that he needed a fresh start, so it was a nice fit for him to go to a program that was also starting over. That's exactly how it has worked out for him and for the program. In a few years when these seniors are gone, UC fans should look back in appreciation for what they did for this program during a very tough time and the players should look back in appreciation for the opportunity they were given. That's how it's supposed to work.

While talking to Mick Cronin about Warren the other day, he said something that I thought was revealing about how he runs his program. This quote didn't make it into the paper, but here it is:

"(Warren) is a tough guy and he's got a strong personality, but he can't win against me. Now and then he comes back and tries to get a W against me but I have to let him know it's never going to happen."

How can you not like a guy who always wanted to be a bearcat (just like his coach!)? I'd love to see Warren stay in the program in some capacity or the community for years to come. Warren seems to "get it". Maybe in a few years we'll look back at him the way we look back at Herb Jones as one of the "building blocks" that got the program kick started again...

i like warrens's character and demeanor.

Since Biggie is seeing less playing time is he hurt? Will he have surgery at the end of the year?

I appreciate all these guys. They kept the Bearcat basketball spirit alive.

Warren is the oldest, born in 1983. I don't think it will take "a few years" to miss Warren. From the box scores some fans may believe that Warren is not important to this team. But who is going the set up the half court offense next year? Freshman Cashmere Wright? A couple more years can make a difference at point guard. Vaughn should stay at SG and nobody else has Warren's ball skills. Am I missing someone?

I wonder whether there is another Juco point guard on Mick's list of prospects. Even if Wright is as good as Downey or Satterfield, he needs time to grow into a leadership role.

I wish MC could have recruited Devon Downey as a UC pg. He sure looks good for USC. Vaughn, Warren, and Downey would have been fun to watch.

Mick Cronin has to take responsibility for blowing the game against U Conn, had it not been for his tech foul UC could have won the game.

Jamaal Warren has been part of the surprise this year. He's developed into a good little floor general and is one of the major reasons, along with Adam H. and John W., that the Cats are playing with some floor discipline and being successful. He's a tough little cookie who takes charge out there. Banging heads with your coach a bit is usually the sign of a feisty attitude, common in winners.

I like how he conducts the team. He runs the offense well and wants the ball. He hits important shots more often that not. What a nice story.

And taking licks left and right in the Big East last year was gasoline on the fire in his belly. How sweet it must be to dish back some pain this year.

Calhoun got a technical too...it evened out. Plus you can't blame a techinal foul early in the game on the result. Blame it on the missed free throws at the end or the horrible foul

For me, Warren has been the greatest thing about this team to watch. His performance last year, quite frankly, made me want to vomit. If memory serves me correctly, he was one of the many who had no idea how to put in a lay-up. This year, since he's been back, it's been phenominal. Every time he steals the ball I get excited. That's the bearcat way. Now, we just need a shot blocker. McClain, I'm talking to you.

I remember I talked to Warren once at a beverage-selling business before he played his first game as a Bearcat. He said that they were going to surprise some people; he said they were going to "Hit some (explitive)'s in the mouth."

Well, he was late by a year. But in the end, he was right.

Warren, keep it up. You're my favorite part about this season.

Go Cats.

I couldn't agree more. Last year's team will hold a special place because they are the ones that held things together against overwhelming odds (analogy: our Army in the Phillipines in the first quarter of 1942). This year's team is special (already) because they started the climb back to "prominence" - where prominence is defined according to the Huggins years of making the NCAA tournament and winning the first game. Of course, I hope UC does better... and I think it will.

Warren is a class act period. He really has shown some grit, determination, and leadership. I am going to continue enjoy watching him play; we have more to accomplish this year.
