MIke Thomas on Nippert and Fifth Third Arena

An architectural study that estimates it would cost up to $240 million to build a new basketball arena and expand Nippert Stadium is not an indication that the University of Cincinnati is about to move on those projects, UC athletic director Mike Thomas said Sunday.
“That study was begun before my arrival and was completed after I arrived,” Thomas said Sunday. “Varsity Village hasn’t been paid off yet. We have incurred a great deal of debt that we need to pay off. We’ve got to bring some financial stability to the daily operation of our department. These are projects that are probably not going to come to fruition anytime soon.”
The Georgetown News-Graphic released details of the study, which was done by Trahan Architects of Baton Rouge, La., in a story published Sunday. According to the paper, the master plan was obtained from a source on the condition of anonymity.
The study estimates that it would cost $159 million for new, 16,001-seat basketball arena with 40 suites to replace Fifth Third Arena, which opened in 1989 and seats 13,176. It would cost $81.9 million to renovate and expand Nippert Stadium from its current seating capacity of 35,000 to 40,001 with 29 suites.
The Nippert expansion would include removal of the Reed-Shank Pavilion, which would be replaced by an expanded upper deck.
But Thomas said the study is only one idea on how to proceed if and when the school decided to move on those projects, which probably won’t be anytime soon.
“I have great respect for the people that did it,” Thomas said, “but much like when you go to see someone in the medical profession, you’re looking for a second opinion. The point is it’s a long way off.”
Thomas also said the study did not take into consideration the possibility of renovating Fifth Third Arena, an option that he said would have to be explored before deciding to build a new facility.
“Right now, we’re not in a position financially to build a new basketball arena or expand our football facility,” Thomas said. “The situation that we have in our department is that we don’t do any facilities projects regardless of the magnitude unless we have the money in hand.
“We’ve got to have some sanity to our day-to-day budget and pay off our Varsity Village debt before we worry about these other things down the road.”

Just wanted to thank you for changing the RSS feed to a full feed!
Keep up the good work!
And don't forget the new indoor practice facility for football(and presumably other sports) they promised Brian Kelly in his revamped contract. I'm sure that won't come cheap.
If uc needs more seating than move to PBS for now. MiKe Brown might let UC rent his stadium for a nice profit......maybe
OSU gaem sold out PBS. A 60k soldout PBS is better than an on campus Nippert with 35k sellout. $90mm to add 5k seats to nippert is a waste of money and makes no economic sense.
Who commissioned the wasted study? Any one wonder why UC is in debt?
yeah,,, and finish paying off the 3 Million they had to pay to pay to force out the winningest coach in UC history, and make up for all the money they are losing on the horrid situation they created with the basketball program
not to mention all the NCAA and NIT money they've missed out on.
Nice, a Georgetown, KY paper has more information on Cincinnati than the Enquirer.
Bill, thanks for getting this info and setting things straight.
I like the progress the University is making, but it does take time. Looks like for now the hold-up is money... sure would like this to happen sooner rather than later.
Please keep us posted.
well - at least MT is honest - sounds like he is under the budget crunch still, and this vision was started under Goin.
How is Goin doing? Does he consult any with UC?
Thanks for getting to the bottom of this one, Bill. It's important to have plans and concepts, and I'm glad the university has them, but clearly these are projects that are not needed to be implemented just yet.
Within 10 years? Almost assuredly.
But first BB needs to fix itself and get the attendance up.
FB is closer to needing more room, but we need sustained attendance at or near capacity in at least 75-80% of games.
This "study" was obviously not realistic. UC will probably not even average 8,000 fans this season and that study says 16,000 capacity? Obviously a study started before the program was bombed into the ground. UC fans are front runners and the one's that weren't left with Huggs. Waste of time for that company.
A new UC fan here
We're fine........for now!
In 5 years this should be done! Screw the Shoe!

how does the guy from georgetown get this before the enquirer?? i guess we are already starting to see the laziness/poor reporting that can happen to a paper when it becomes the only paper in town.

I can understand why he is not in a rush to build a 16,000 seat basketball arena.....they are only averaging what, a 1,000 per game over the past two years. Got to get a product worth paying to see before their is any fan interest in a new arena. Oh, and yes, I blame Z.
However, they need to get moving on Nippert. Try to get private donors to step up, do what every organization does when they need money....hold fund drives. What are the logistics when they do start construction/demolition of Nippert? Are all the games going to be at PBS that year or all away games?
Nippert may need more seats due to interest, but it has a good atmosphere and is not pressing - if people don't buy season tickets sorry about their luck.
The sight lines at the Shoe (no bank endorsements or references please) are not very good. The new design (at least proposed) looks awesome. It will have to wait. I commend the current regime for not going into debt, but hope they can do something in the near future.
When we average 32,500 a game per season in football and 12,750 a game in basketball then we can consider the expansions.
On the other hand we should be prepared to see Brian Kelly leave.
Thomas also said the study did not take into consideration the possibility of renovating Fifth Third Arena, an option that he said would have to be explored before deciding to build a new facility.
I would think that this would have been option #1 considering that UC is landlocked. I guess logic is sometimes forgotten by the powers that be.
Right now the first priority is Nippert. If you build suites and boxes that will start generating cash right away.
I agree that 5/3rd isn't ideal by any means, but it isn't a dump either.
Plus with "Sippin Mick" as coach its not like you really need more than 85-hundred seats anyway.
Brian Kelly just gagged on his Special K.
The money just does not exist for this, nor are these facilities needed. For larger FB crowds games can be moved to PB stadium. The hoops team is no where near selling out the existing facility. Attendance was dropping even when Huggs was still here. Cincy is a large town, but there are multiple pro and college programs in the vicinity. There is only so much money to go around. It's not like Lexington, where it's the only show in town.
I think a better way to say this is there is no money that Mike Thomas is willing to share with the public at this point.
That doesn't mean there isn't a push.
Same old Bill. Just when some thought you turned the corner, you come out with another negative article to make UC Athletics look bad.
No surprise here.
We need new blood in the UC department of the Enquirer.
Just as a means of gathering info, the Bearcats should look at one of the hottest home football dates next year and negotiate with Paul Brown Stadium to use their field.
Just to see what happens.
Lord knows the traffic flow would be better.
Have an automatic screening that looks for key words. 99-percent of the postings do not need to be screened.
I would donate one half of my power ball winnings to see this happen.
My hunch is Bill was just responding to the stupid KY article. He had to address it once that came out. At least he got to the bottom of it ... and from the horse's mouth.
I want to know what was promised to Brian Kelly for his new contact. Was a larger Nippert, PBS, or new game facility promised by a specific date? What date and size FB stadium.
I'm not referring to the Bubble practice field promise either.
This information should be spelled out in BK's public contract. Bill Kock please find the terms by freedom of info act.
"Yeah, and finish paying off the 3 Million they had to pay to pay to force out the winningest coach in UC history, and make up for all the money they are losing on the horrid situation they created with the basketball program."
Yesi'mstill mad 8:58pm, let's crack open a cold one. I'm still sick about losing Huggs, too. It was amazing how much effort he got out of his players, despite the fact his players had to wear leg irons during the game.
Yeah, those were simpler, happier times for the 'Cats. Pump 5, you're pre-pay over there. And pass the beer nuts.
When is Nancy and the BOT going to realize that UC needs a first-class arena like Xavier's Cintas Center?
Dump the Shoe!
You know...The University of Toledo is rennovating thier Savage Hall which I can say from experiences in each is almost the exact same design as the Shoe. Maybe they should look into what UT is doing up on the Maumee
