Seton Hall 60, UC 57 - 2:33 second half

Trialing by one, UC's Vaughn just missed a three to beat the shot clock, but it was no good. Seton Hall then scored on a baseline jumper by Brian Laing. Vaughn has come alive a little bit offensively, but still has only 13 points.

UC is not running any offense and are playing terrible on defense.

at 1:57 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

UC just can not figure out this 1-2-2 zone. They do not move the ball and then have to desperation shoot.

at 1:57 PM Blogger Unknown said...

Any reason why Mclain and his shot blocking is out on D with a min left???Oh hey SH just scored

at 1:59 PM Blogger Unknown said...

Yep looks like MC is from the Huggs school of offensive strategy..

at 2:05 PM Blogger Unknown said...

waste 3 seconds to foul,,nice....

at 2:09 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

What a pathetic performance.

Sippin' Mick's crew made dumb decisions, had way more fouls called (again) and couldn't shoot the ball again. Vaughn choked in the clutch while Seton Hall's players didn't.

Now 9-11 and 4-4 in the conference. As "great" as they have been in the conference, they are now "average" and slipping fast. Looks like 9-13 and 4-6 after losing at WVU and vs. Marquette.

Could they finish 11-19 or worse again??

at 2:11 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh well, another close loss. They could sure use winning one of these.

Odd how the Bearcats have just enough potential to be interesting to follow but not quite enough talent/experience to keep from being frustrating to watch.

at 2:22 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Quit making excuses....Mick is no more than an average coach....he is not respected because of his height and Huggins is going to each him for lunch...

at 2:34 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

At this point, should we expect any away wins the rest of the season. It's obvious at this point that the win at Louisville was a fluke. The remainder of this season will likely not be much fun. And I definitely agree that Mick is an average coach...

Anon 2:34 -

Yeah, the Louisville game was definitely a fluke. And the Syracuse game. And the Villanova game. And the Pitt game.

Idiot.

Im just trying to get a handle on the sub patterns, and use of players by Mick..Its tough to be critical because you dont see what happens in practice, but I dont understand how McClain doesnt get a few more minutes??And why waste D Wilks freshman year, should have been a redshirt...Unless MC throws in the towel after the next few games and goes with the freshman players the rest of the way??

at 3:01 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

How is it that this team with little overall talent is able to play good and average teams close to the end? MC is coaching well with average talent. I hope he gets the opportunity to coach when he has top 20 team talent.

Damn, there went the "Coach Of The Year Award". Better put the bronze statue of Jamaal Warren on hold too.

Hey CHEVIOT SPORTS AUTHORITY:

Look on the positive side. Sippin' and the boys are making some folks happy:
1) All O$U and x trolls.
2) Big East coaches, who won't have to coach against a real coach and a real UC team, and most of all
3) Nancy Z, who couldn't be more pleased at this point since UC BB is right in the middle of the Big East - For a week anyhow.

And yes, I AM still upset and angry about this whole BB mess!!

at 4:00 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Where oh where is Sippin' Mick's defense team or fan club today? Need someone to tell us again what a GREAT coach he really is. Come on, say it again for us...LOL

at 4:37 PM Blogger oldtimer said...

1. Where was Williamson near the end, instead of Sykes? Dumb

2. Team played lethargic most of game. Where was full court trap, why not shake team out of doldrums and rattle SH? Dumb

3. Vaughn is like Adam Dunn, streaky as hell. One game great, next game dog. Much too inconsistent to be go-to guy. He reminds me of Burrell as a frosh and soph. Thought the entire offense revolved around him and both years X missed tourney. Vaughn still gets lazy on defense and makes bad fouls. Not nearly as good as he and Cronin think he is.

4. Her-Shawn-Nik has turned into a head case on lay-ins.

5. Why not start McClain in middle and have AH and JW as two big power forwards? AH plays better facing the basket anyway, don't understand why Cronin hasn't tried, he's tried a lot of worse combos.

6. This team completely lacks killer instinct. But they do play well in spurts, and they play hard. Cronin has done a great job getting them to play as one, but they're still too inexperienced to overcome their mistakes. Sucks, but it's true.

7. Having said all this, it's a fun team to watch because now they're in every game. More or less. Remember, there's only a couple mediocre teams left on the schedule, life in the Big East requires a deep bench and tough physical play, UC isn't quite there yet.

at 4:52 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is anyone else tired of watching H-bomb, Sykes and Gentry? This team is going NO WHERE. So, why not play Mitchell, McClane, Davis and Belton? Wilks must be a completely wasted scholarship.

Sippin Mick has come up with a unique game plan that seems to be keeping them relatively close in most games. Stall the ball on offense (never seen a team have so much trouble with the shot clock as this one) and just foul the hell out em on defense. If the opposition shoots foul shoots like UC then the game remains close.

Adam was fouled on his last shot with 20 seconds left. There was a hand on his right arm as he missed that layup. Okay, the ref didn't make the call, but don't blame Adam for missing the shot.

at 5:01 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah! Remember last year when we were told how much better we would be with Adam H. playing? Wow, think how much better we would be if he could actually play. And, of course, I don't understand the game of BB...LOL

at 5:02 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wondered how long it would take for one of the boys to blame the officiating. LOL.

I will bet the officials will really be bad Wednesday.

at 5:09 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

In all honesty, the officiating has been bad at points. But after the BB program was destroyed by the very persons who should have been protecting and promoting it, overall respect for the program vanished. Sadly, it may take years for it to be restored. And yes, i do blame the BOT and Nancy Z. and am frustrated that they are stinking appointments made in Columbus, of ALL places, where they have an interest in protecting another STATE school...

The officiating was bad and not even. Did you see the faces of the Bearcat players after some of those calls? I saw the look on Sike's face and Warren's face. Never the less, we have to tough it out and endure it. They did not pitch a fit. That's Mick's job

Bearcat in Atlanta,
I agree, but that is kind of like saying a C- is better than a D+.

at 5:36 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Darwin Harding,

Look at the stats. Adam is the third leading scorer on the team, so he can't be missing all of his shots. Granted, it is sad that no one other than Vaughn or Williamson can score, but Adam is the third leading scoreer.

at 5:39 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

That really makes the point of just how weak this team really is if Adam H. is the third leading scorer and ha can't hit a layup standing near 7 foot.

at 5:41 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Adam H. doesn't play 7 feet tall - He plays at 7 feet small.

at 5:48 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Apparently MC thinks that Adam is better than McClain...this year. Maybe McClain will be an A or B next year.

What happens if McClain get hurt next year? Gates at center?

Did you see the picture of Gates next to Mullins? They look the same height.

at 5:51 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

McClain has a bone spur that will be removed after the season. Likely that has limited his playing time.

Who is Mullins?

at 5:58 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

To Carl in Atlanta: Let us just say that H-bomb tries. He is horrible, but he tries. After 20 games, if he still can't make a lay-up, I'm afraid he never will. A good big man can score inside with 3 guys hanging on him, a bump on the arm on a point blank shot is not an excuse for missing every time. Give the guys who are coming back a chance to get some experience. Perhaps they could even be an improvement this season.

at 6:01 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

B.J. Mullins is a 7 foot center recruited by OSU, class of 2008, from Canal Winchester. Withrow (Gates) beat them by one point recently.

at 6:08 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Darwin,

Adam is not at the same level as Hicks, Maxiell and Martin. No argument from me on that. Why big Adam can't take the ball and shove it the basket is a mystery.

I guess he can't jump or doesn't want to.

at 6:14 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Darwin,
Adam made two of four layups today. After one shot I started to believe that he was going to relax. I want to believe he will.

Some say Adam rushes his shot. Maybe if he had just one great game, he'd become a better player.

Carl,
Do you really believe that Adam H. is capable of one great game? And in the remote possibility if that occuring, it would hardly be repeated.

at 6:37 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

No redshirt for Wilks this year. He has played in 12 games.

at 6:46 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I would not bet on Adam. It is more like a dream that I want to believe.

BTW, do you remember Barwin trying to box out Odom? I want to see what Adam does with Hibbert. Just curious. Not expecting miracles.

Lance emphasizes that UC won't be BE competitive until 2010 in BB. I never liked huggs exclusive emphasis on body building to be a tought UC team. But I do believe this UC BB program needs to be hitting the weight room. Other than Vaughn and Belton, this team is soft.

Adam H. can't jump and is soft inside. This is why he can't score inside and doesn't draw fouls when he shoots.

at 7:15 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

the wins over syracuse, nova and pitt were fools gold. ajj had key injuries,

going to be a loooooooong time until the next coach gets here.

best thing mick can do is keep recruiting players for the next coach.

at 7:27 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

you realize UC has had key injuries too, right?

or does that count because it wouldnt help your argument? that same pitt team beat gtown 5 days before UC beat them. Louisville was completely healthy for the UC game. nothing tarnished about that...

at 7:47 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dizzylo86,
You are partially right about Louisville. All their starters played, but two of them were not at 100%. With all of them healthy, they've only lost once since the UC game compared to UC's four losses. So, to a point, the Louisville win was fool's gold.

at 8:03 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

so they were healthy one game after the UC game, but not for the UC game? right...keep making up stuff that sounds good to you.

no one here (i hope) would argue that UC is a better team that Louisville. That is obviously going to play out over the entire course of the conference season. however, going on the road and beating a team that is very likely to make the sweet 16 (and maybe further) isnt a fluke. its a young team playing well in a big game.

this team is frustrating at times to watch. their young guys have a ways to go, especially in terms of consistency, and the seniors are very limited, but beating teams like lousiville, syracuse, villanova and pittsburgh in a 3 week stretch isnt some fluke. you dont get that lucky in the big east.

your argument is stupid

at 8:14 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Learn the facts before you make ignorant comments yourself. Your argument is the stupid one!

at 8:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

what facts? louisville was healthy. they played all of their players. they started winning as early as their NEXT game, and relatively easily.

cincinnati on the other hand was missing one of their two best players.

wait, who is the stupid one? you sound lost...

at 8:25 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe some of you should learn something about the Big East.

There's only one really good team this year--Georgetown. Everyone else is way below, mostly rebuilding. Rutgers is at the bottom of the league and won at Pitt. Then UConn beat Carolina. Something like this is happening once a week. What does that say? What excuses?

Injuries happen. It's part of the season. And this is not the piss-poor C-USA that UC danced through every year only to get a terrible NCAA seed and then bow in the second round because they were not prepared for the better teams.

The Big East has always been a grind. You win some, you lose some and you hash it out at MSG. BE is even harder now that the league is so big and the travel goes from Syracuse to South Florida to Marquette. That's NBA travel 2-3 times a week.

So enough with the crap about healthiness, terrible coaching, the referees and all sorts of other crying, whining and complaining. This is a rebuilding program. It's really just Year One. If you can't understand those documented facts and the mission ahead, get off the bandwagon.

Just don't come back when the program gets turned around and say "I was behind ya all the way."

at 8:26 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Since you are not unknowledgeable of the circumstances, I'll s-p-e-l-l it out for you. Padgett was recovering from an injury and was nowhere near 100% and another of their players was still in the process of recovery. That said, all of their starters played in the game.

at 8:31 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:25, thank you so much!

I was wondering when a member of the "I LOVE MICK No Matter What Kool Aid Sippin' Fan Club" would show up!!

at 8:33 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

padgett played around 30 minutes. if he wasnt ready, why would pitino do that? again, you are making things up that arent true. was one game all he needed to be ready for kentucky, a game UofL won relatively easily? it doesnt add up.

the other player that came back was caracter, who wasnt hurt. he was suspended by the team. so he wasnt recovering.

at 8:36 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I stand corrected on Caracter, but Padgett was clearly not at 100%. I suppose we'll simply have to agree to disagree. Anyway, the important thing is - GO BEARCATS!!!!

at 8:39 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:31:

because he is realistic of the situation and what mick inherited?

bob huggins (im a fan by the way) couldnt make the NCAAs last year, and didnt even make it out of the second round of the NIT, a game they lost to depaul at home.

he had a MUCH better situation than mick currently has.

the people that complain offer no better solution. its sad.

whats funny is every bearcat fan loved mick cronin when he was here and badly missed him when he left for UofL. notice the talent drop off when AK was the head recruiter, and not MC.

now they blame him for huggins being fired. i hope you guys arent this stupid in the real world...

at 8:43 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I really don't get why Sippin' Mick seems to have an obsession with Gentry, Sikes and H. None of the three have much talent and yet Mick keeps playing them even while they don't score at all and/or don't play good defense.

Mitchell, Davis, McClain, etc. come in and at least show promise and the ability to score some points and Mick pulls them from the games for the rest of the way.

Somewhat baffling.

at 8:43 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Quit making excuses....Mick is no more than an average coach....he is not respected because of his height and Huggins is going to each him for lunch"

Now Huggins is a big man, but I don't think even he could finish off Cronin, at least not without a few kegs of beer.

at 8:45 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was jogging to catch up with the UC bandwagon. I've quit jogging for this year.

I don't care to watch a rebuilding year again. I can follow my kids' high school and grade school programs for development efforts.

at 8:57 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:45, not to worry. There'll be plenty of excuses next year from Mickie.

at 9:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mick has a limited cast of players even though they are better than last year. None of these players are going to play 40 minutes. Adam H. gives valuable minutes and provides a certain toughness. McClain will be great but he still plays like a freshman. When he gets bigger and more confident the minutes will come. We are better off with Adam H. playing the majority of minutes and McClain coming in to spell him and to provide minutes. I am encouraged by some of the wins I didn't expect to see and frustrated by the losses to UCONN & SH. This year will be better than last year, but the best talent are still freshmen and we are playing in the Big East.

Time, experience and maturity will show better teams next year and especially the year after.

at 9:24 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The UConn and SH losses are especially bad because they are the most recent and things aren't going to be any easier the rest of this season. Losing a game they should have won (UConn) and one they could have won (SH) doesn't rest easily on my optimistic side.

at 10:15 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

that 7:15 did not say anything about louisville health. But louisville did play kentucky right after uc.

and u really think pitt was 'fired up' to play uc after beating georgetown? obviously they weren't - it's tough to get ready for last years last place team.

let's see how the record plays out - uc plays last place rutgers and second last usf -

will coy cronin win em all?

at 12:02 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow, the Jethro Bodine of sports fans strikes again. But then, since so many of you don't have an ounce of basketball common sense, that's no surprise. Seriously pathetic that you don't recognize and understand the situation UC is in this year and last.

at 8:36 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I amazed at the stupidity shown on the blog by so-called basketball fans that cannot seem to grasp how difficult of a rebuilding job Cronin was handed.

I guess these morons expected UC to win the Big East this year?

UC would have won yesterday if not for Williamson getting hurt and getting an early 4th foul (on an absolutely horrendous call).

at 8:47 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow Guys! How can I become a member of the "I LOVE MICK No Matter What Kool Aid Sippin' Fan Club" too? Oh, that's right. I don't understand BB or the situation UC has been in the last two years because of the destruction caused by the BOT and Nancy Z. Yeah, right...LOL

at 8:54 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anonymous 8:36am - I agree with you totally. That was not a bad game yesterday. Vaughn's sub-par shooting day, perhaps a sub-par day for Warren, poor free throw shooting, and we still almost get a Big East win on the road. I don't agree with the concept of "good" losses, but this team is really doing better than my expectations.

And why would you throw in the towel on this season, and play freshmen just to get experience? How will that help players learn to give 100%. That is a ridiculous idea. We can fight to make the Big East tournament, to make it into the NIT, and to play our way back to NYC for the final few rounds of the NIT. Those are good goals to shoot for, and can set the tone for next year, when help in on the way.

at 9:31 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good posts Bearcat Tom and Anonymous 8:36.

And Anon 8:47, congratulations for being able to survey a situation and get it completely wrong. Coaches know what they have and understand realistic goals for their talent.

You are hereby challenged to show us a coach in this country who would take this exact talent and win the Big East, or even earn a n NCAA berth.

Just like in baseball and football, at the end of the season, your record pretty much dictates the talent you put on the field. There are rarely any sidebars that change that.

at 9:39 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who is coaching the big men at UC?
Adam H had 1+ years to learn how to shoot inside and protect the ball. He never learned this skill.

Watch any productive big man who can't jump and you see common skills to protect the ball and draw falls when shooting:
1)Use your non shooting hand to protect the ball and draw fouls. You initiate the contact by Waving the non shooting arm.
2)Thrust your butt into the defender's body to knock him off balance so the defender can't jump and block your shot.
3)Use your elbows to position the defender to open up your lane to the basket.

Just some basic moves that Adam H was never taught, especially when he had 1 year of downtime to learn. Pretty pathetic.

rickNmd,
It's obvious that by your comments that you'll defend Mick no matter what. The difference comes between supporting and defending. I support Mick, but I feel the jury is still out on him. The next two years will indicate if he is a upper level coach or an average one. This blog has already seen both opinions. Let's just wait and see, because the next two years will tell the REAL story, good or bad.

at 11:43 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

10:28 Anonymous - Most college basketball fans are WAY too impatient and set unreasonable expectations. They look at their own team, with little comparison to what other teams are doing, what resources they have (or don't have),in comparison to other teams. As a result, AD's pull the plug too early on new coaches. We are nowhere near that point on Cronin. Last year was a throw-away year, with Mick fielding a team with last minute JUCOs. This year, with 6 freshmen and those JUCOs, one of whom is playing his first year of NCAA BB, he is not doing too bad. Next year, he'll lose the "experienced" JUCOs and will have freshmen, sophomores, and Vaughn. That could be an NCAA team, but not a great one, given the youth. If UC is not at least a "3" seed in the NCAA in two years (2009-2010) I will start to question the hiring of Mick. He will have "his guys" and they will have a lot of experience. If you expect anything better than that, sooner than that, you are dreamin'. You came into this program and found an empty barn.

at 11:47 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Correction to last post - should read "Mick" instead of "you" in last post.

at 2:27 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anonymous 10:28, what's Cronin done wrong? Get hired? It's obvious that to some of you he can't do anything right.

I'm not a Cronin backer, I'm not a Cronin hater. I'm a Cronin watcher. But most of all, I'm fully aware of the circumstances by which the program is currently handicapped. He's also still a young coach and learning on the job.

Remember that Dean Smith was hung in effigy at one point early in his career at North Carolina. Worked out pretty well for them in the end.

Some you nitpick every second of a game like it's the end of the world. Do we want UC to win? Sure. But you are completely delusional if you had higher expectations this year than what's being shown thus far.

I'm fairly certain it was a Lonnie Wheeler column that stated when Andy Kennedy wasn't hired that UC could be looking at a 4-5 year transition period from the time Huggins was fired. I believe that is true.

I also believe Bearcat Tom is right--the 2009-10 season will tell us more about Cronin than anything that is happening now. In the meantime, watch, observe, learn, listen. Be patient.

There's really no point or productivity of this madness everytime they lose a game. Cronin isn't getting fired. You're wasting your breath. No one but a bunch of damn fools could possibly believe this team was going to do better than it has.

at 4:41 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are a Cronin defender. At least admit it. Or maybe you just don't read your own comments.

at 5:19 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Rick,
Everything you wrote is true except when you wrote "Its obvious that to some of you that he can't do anything right." Its not some, its one anon. The negative comments and Sippin Mick stuff are coming primarily from one guy, who is very unhappy. He just posts a lot and tries to make us feel as bad as he does, IMO.

In Mick we trust...for few more years.

at 5:44 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Funny how Anon 4:41 tells RickNMd to read his own comments, yet Anon 4:41 never answers any of Rick's legit questions.

You're right Bearcat Tom, Anon 4:41 is just a perpetual crap-in-the-bag poster, no matter what the situation.

at 5:57 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey Bearcat in Atlants,

I'm the one who started the Sippin' Mick moniker and still use it but I am NOT the kool aid sippin' fan club poster.

I did post recently that Mick has coached well in some games but I didn't feel he did vs. UConn.

I also questioned playing the JUCOs/Adam H. too much in this very threat, saying the freshman with some talent should start at this point.

So no, not everyone calling him Sippin' Mick is me. I don't know how many others do it but at least one or two other regulars here use it.

at 6:08 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

the sipping Mick moniker is a bore. Please Develop new material.

at 6:59 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anonymous, I was not talking to you.

"Koolaid," "Sippin," "Little Mickie," and "LOL" are all buzzwords from the same guy, IMO, who is not contributing anything to this blog. I recommend skipping all of his posts. He is probably blocked from posting on Keith Wedinger's and Todd Cunnigham's blog sites, which why he comes here and posts anon.

at 3:36 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

as bad a coach as yates was - he at least won 17 games his second year.

again - what coaching was shown in the 60+ second half at ND?

wait and see the body of work - mt suit will not admit he has a bad hire for another 2 years yet.

btw - ucats fees are going up along with the ticket prices. enjoy the games!
