What if UC had Mike Williams?
I don't get to hear the TV broadcasts of UC's games, so I don't know if the pre-season injury to Mike Williams gets mentioned very often. Typically, though, it seems as if injuries that occur once the season has started get more notice, and by extension the coach of that team gets a little more sympathy, as is the case with Pitt and the injuries to Levance Fields and Mike Cook.
I have never seen Mike Williams play except for one game in the Deveroes Summer League last summer, so I don't know the answer to this question, but I wonder how many more wins UC would have now if Williams were playing. Would he have been able to slow Harangody in the second half last night? Would he have scored inside during the first half when UC had a chance to take a big lead? Is it possible that UC would have won that game?
I know how highly Mick Cronin regards Williams and what he would have meant to this team, but it's also true that whenever a player has to sit out, whether because of injury or because he's sitting out his transfer year, his coach will talk about how that player is just dominating in practice. Mick talked that way last year about Williams and about Adam H. I remember Andy Kennedy and Frank Martin raving about Abdul Herrera the year he was ineligible.
But sometimes it's true. When Anthony Buford sat out a year after transferring from Akron, I saw first-hand how well he played in practice. And he carried that over the following year when he was able to play, helping UC get to the Final Four.
I don't know if Williams is in that class. I suppose we'll find out next winter.

I saw Williams play this summer in the Deveroes League and I can honestly say that we beat Belmont, BG, and Xavier. That would put our record at 11-6 and a lock for the NIT and a possible at large bid for the NCAA Tourney.
there are two things i think uc could use badly:
1. someone to balance the load with vaughn
2. and inside scoring presence (this would greatly help ucs young wing players (bishop, mitchell, and davis)).
ill admit i know very little about mike williams (just what ive read from uc reporters) but i would think he would help in this manner a lot.
jamual warren (not all that good) playing the point has helped this team tremendously. i think mike williams would too...
One more thing that could help is to start Biggie and let Adam H. come off the bench. It's gotten to the point at times on offense that he's embarrassing himself and UC. And, please don't tell me he's needed for defense. I completely agree that UC should be preparing for the future and included in that is more playing time for McClain...
What if Kenyon Martin had not broken his leg. What if? What if? What if? does not change anything.
I believe that we would have won at Illinois State too. He would have brought leadership to the team early which they desparately needed.
Remember that Biggie is slowed right now because of a foot injury. MC may feel that he just can't get any additional minutes from him.
Watched Pitt/G-town Monday night. At one point Bilas and Rafftery talked about key injuries so far in the Big East, and showed a graphic of which teams lost which players. There was no mention of UC or Williams.
If UC could start the season over right now and replay all those early games, even without Mike Williams, they would beat Belmont, Bowling Green, a good Illinois State team, and I'm even going to say they would beat UAB. I think if they could replay Xavier right now and had a healthy Mike Williams, I think they win that one.......but without Mike, I think they lose even if they played now. So I'm going to say they'd have 4 more wins and 4 less losses at this point if we could replay the early part of the schedule. It's a shame........this would be the feel-good story of the year if they could have avoided those ugly losses due to inexperience early on. They would be 12-6 instead of 8-9. It's a shame.
Seems that Biggie should be logging as many minutes as possible. He is the future.
But Bill kOck, I've read references that Biggie may be nuturing a foot injury that requires end of season surgery. So maybe Adam H is playing becuase Bigggie is hurt?
Williams was highlighted on the coaches Sunday program..........he is rehabbing 3Xs a a day.........the guy is chiseled!!!!

Has not Mike Williams already played 2 seasons of major college basketball making little or no contribution to his team? Why is he all of a sudden supposed to be the next coming Elgin Baylor? I know he was a high school all-American and I hope he makes the grade, but I am tired of hearing the what ifs about a guy who has never been a factor.
Last season it was what if they had Adam H?
I've never seen williams play. I guess he is better than Adam H and Ron Allen.
But if he will be a solid UC contributor is another guess too.
He failed at TX for a reason. And I don't care if he had 5 all-americans ahead of him. If he was good enough he would have gotten minutes and stayed at TX.

Not to worry though, Red. Mike Williams is actually a BB player.
williams will make a large psychological impact. he is the team leader. if he shot to make the shot instead of trying to avoid a block ala adam, he would be a difference maker. in summer league that was true. the team is making large strides regardless, they were clearly a better team than ND, regardless of the final score. they will continue to improve, seemingly one player at a time. look at any conference you want and watch the tremendous difference between a home and away game. do you think GT pushes NC to the brink on a "neutral" court? the officiating gets completely out of reason at times but no one is stupid enough to risk the certain reprisals. these days the only way to tell how good a team is is on a neutral court. i know that everyone goes to a game to see their home team win, but it would be nice if the absurd situations would be held toa minimum. long home court winning streaks are very transparent.
What anon 12:31pm ?
UC is clearly a better team than ND?
Really? Then are we to assume they lost because they were outcoached? Your Home Court excuse of an expected 20+ point differential for the home team in the 2nd half is absurd!
what if NAncy ZImpher had never been hired?
What if Oscar were 50 years younger?
I think the loss at ND can be attribute to a second half meltdown and a lot of blown calls. While I think they still probably would have lost without those blown calls, the deficit by which they lost in my opinion would have been less than 10.
looking at what Andy kennedy is doing - what if he was our coach? better game coach - recruited well (playing two freshmen a lot). No doubt UC would have had a better record now.
I wish Biggie had an attitude to him. I think it will develop but he could run the show in my opinion. He plays so tentatively which is standard for a freshman. I have very high hopes for him. They should bring Kmart in to push him around a bit. These Cats are going to be good.
for you guys who say he did nothing at Texas, he played behind Aldridge, who was the #2 overall pick two years ago.
Anon 4:19, do you read what you are typing? AK is a better coach? Right, and a game ago no one could beat MC's defensive strategies. How fickle are we? MC is doing well and working his a$$ off, and AK's borderline lackadaisical attitude in '02 did not help his situation.
Lets ease this rocking boat of emotion here...
We have winning record in the Beast. And I agree we would be at least 4 games better with Mike. Wins at St. Johns, Belmont, NC State, and Bowling Green.
He brings A LOT of talent (for the record he only played one year at Texas), and some stability. We could use some more of the latter on this blog...
I lived in Austin when Mike was playing there. I can't say that he is going to be the difference maker, but I can tell you that UT was really looking forward to having him in the starting lineup the year he left. He and Barnes did not get along at all, that is why he left.
UC would lose to ND by 14 instead of 17. Its not like the Sippin one is much of a tactician.
seeing that AK was the coach of the year last year - and he is 15 - 1 so far this year WITH new kids, he definitely is proving he can coach in a top tier conference in a university which typically is a coach killer. And with the cronin-shaded glasses off - any pre-zimpher grad could see that.
Kennedy would by far have done a better job at UC - his guys play with fire all the time. and he does it with the guys he has - not whining about the guys he doesn't have. excuses are for losers. (hint - what is mick's total record over a year and a half at uc. It is less than .500, which means a losing record).
if you are thrilled with the performance so far - more power to you!!!
Of course! It's OBVIOUS that AK is better since both coaches are in identical situations *sigh*. Is that what your X degree taught you?
