The aftermath

A year ago, the UC players were about as devastated as they as they would get all season after blowing a six-point lead with 4:04 to play and losing to Rutgers, 73-69, here at The RAC. I remember Jamual Warren, the best quote on the team, emerging from the locker room and saying that if he could find a bridge he would just keep on walking across it. Of course, the Bearcats were all smiles after their 62-58 overtime win over Rutgers tonight.

How does Deonta Vaughn go from scoring six points in regulation to getting 13 in overtime?
“In overtime, I had open shots," Vaughn said. "It started with the wide open three. I knocked it down and then after that I hit a few pull-ups and it just helped me go over from there.”

The important thing for UC is that John Williamson was there when they needed him, scoring 22 points and playing like he did early last season when he was UC's first offensive option. If he can continue to play close to the way he did tonight, the Bearcats will not only make the Big East Tourament - and it's more and more likely that they will - they might even get a favorable seed.

Hey cheviot, looking forward to the Bearcats busting your Xavier punk butts at the Shoe next season.

CSA - Your whining is magnificent! How embarrassing for you to continue to expose your bitterness in such a way! What a brat. I love dullards who dub themselves names such as "authority" and then continually make ignorant remarks ad nauseum.

Your banal angst is duly noted (again). Perhaps you should change your name to "buffoon"? It's far more appropriate.

I heard that X was considering dropping UC from the schedule. Nothing to gain by beating UC.

CSA exemplifies all the stereotypes of the West Side. You're the sports authority of your hole in the wall bar. Keep living the dream!

Hey oldtimer, many Bearcat fans would like nothing more than to stop playing those preppy losers from the crappy conference every season. So I hope that you are actually right, but we all know that you are still little brother forever.

at 10:24 PM Blogger Cheviot Sports Authority said...

What do you disagree about Dave?
1. That it was a terrible game. or
2. That those are both bad teams.

Please explain your answer. You can look at the stats and see that it was a terrible game and you can look at the records and see that they are both bad teams.

at 10:26 PM Blogger Dave in Omaha said...

Hey oldtimer! Apparently you don't get enough attention either? Begging for respect for XU here? OK...XU has a scrappy ballclub. Best of luck to you. As ever, they'll take a back seat to UC...deal with it or don't (er, clearly you don't, otherwise you wouldn't be here clamoring for love and attention)

Reality bites, don't it?

at 10:30 PM Blogger Dave in Omaha said...

CSA - A thing of beauty? Nope, but a road win in confernce is always pretty...

UC has a SOS of #5, yet they are in the top tier of a top 3 conference with more wins over top 25 teams than others...

bad team? Not at all...room to get better? hell yes. They're doing it too. Of course, being an "authority" I'm sure you noticed.

Miserable shooting performances from two below average (below .500) teams. Simple facts.

at 10:41 PM Blogger Cheviot Sports Authority said...

Wrong Answer Dave. They should also win their next 2 games but that still is not going to make them a good team. But I am happy for you, that you can be satisfied with such low level of achievement. I myself, demand excellence.

at 10:51 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes Cheviot demands excellence yet he's on the UC board anyhow -- complaining. He probably also thought the Patriots at 18-1 were losers too.

at 11:11 PM Blogger Greg C. said...

I'll demand excellence from the team once they've had sufficient time to recover from the gutting of the program. Next year, I expect much improvement. But this year, I'm certainly not going to get upset about a conference road win.

at 11:23 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well put, Greg C. That was certainly not a game to be extremely happy about. Yet a victory should never get us down. I have concerns regarding next year at point and center especially, but will also expect some real improvement overall.

Cheviot blows. Crap bars (which is the only reason I can comprehend one actually having the misfortune of ending up there) and complete, mind numbing dullness.

I assume that's why Cheviot guy blows as well.

Nice to see John Williamson finally show up. Hell of an effort taking it down low against the big guy from Rutgers.
Hopefully he'll keep it up. Other than Vaughn we don't have many options offensively.

at 12:13 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't know how anyone can be confident about next year's team at this point when these freshman will play the majority of minutes. None of them look to have any offensive skills and they show very inconsistent defense as well.

CSA,
I guess guys on the other side of this civil war toss personal insults too.
It's one thing to attack you -- you can take it. But when somebody attacks Cheviot, that's a different matter as far as I'm concerned,LOL. My aunt worked at Habig's restaurant there.
And, yes, I spent many a night drowning my sorrows in Cheviot bars.
But, as a fellow Westsider, PLEASE give it up with the Cronin bashing. Criticize him on basketball all you want -- we can have that discussion all night.
Do you want the Bearcats to succeed or not?

Bill,
Thanks for the additional insight from Warren and Vaughn.
I know you were criticized -- probably rightfully so -- in your early days on this blog for just reporting the bare facts without any "color".
It's good to see that you listened and have responded.
Not a huge deal, but I thought kudos were in order.

Somebody is posting under my name lately. I take it as a compliment, thank you. OBviously you're pretty threatened. I think we can all figure out who it is, since there is one main child trolling for attention here. Poor chap, he seems to need attention worse than Chad Johnson.

To clarify, the name on my posts "oldtimer" has been and will always be highlighted in BLUE only. The one in black is not me.

Guess acting like an adult is too hard for some people.

Hey CSA if UC basketball is terrible and dead and watching it is such a bother, seems pretty dumb to keep watching something you dislike so much. How bout providing some facts and statistics to back up your rantings....instead of childishly attacking anybody who likes the progress of the program. And drop the Luddite act: it's boring.

You've pretty much blown it, my man. You've managed to lose all credibility around here. Shouting people down, even in ink, doesn't make you appear smarter, it makes you appear stupider.

From one of the Rutgers message boards this morning:

"Cronin outcoached Hill...3 things stand out....The press in the early 2nd half resulted in a few RU turnovers and Cincy buckets, pounding the ball to Willaimson who took over and putting in that guy Gentry who drained 2 very big 3s from the wing. The guy can coach. Im not knocking Hill here but Cronin was huge in this game. He is elevating his program quickly."

Don Criqui is alive and well!

Wow! I mean, I understand that ESPN Classic has now ventured into showing live games. But, who knew they could actually wake the dead and have a mummy call a basketball game! Amazing!

Last time I heard him do play by play was when Tom Dempsey kicked that 63 yard FG in 1970.

Welcome back Don!

Any conference win on the road is a good win, an Vaugh stepped up when it counted.

Good news is Bearcats continue to improve but reality is that both UC and Rutgers are teams with losing records - two of five teams in BE with overall losing records.

UC should finish at 15-15 and 10-8 in BE - not bad, and maybe an NIT bid.

I like UCONN to win BE tourney - they seemed to catch fire after beating Bearcats and are playing with a lotta confidence.

Bearcat fans - don't be so pessimistic good things ahead for MC and UC. Turn into today at noon if you want to see an exciting game - X/St.J.

Good post 4:58

It just goes to show outside of a few bitter/close-minded people on this blog, that the rest of the nation realizes Mick's potential and that this team is on the rise.

Another point, some on here want to bitch and moan about Nancy and the BOT and it extend it to Mick, why is there no criticism of the hiring of Brian Kelly. The BOT and Nancy hired Kelly just like they hired Mick.

Finally to the posters who say that the Big East is down, just look at UC's conference record, what about Huggs and WVU - Beaten badly at home by UC and with a 5-5 conference record. Guess by that logic, WVU is not a very good team either.

at 8:55 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

How come all the Andy Kennedy over Mick people went back to their hole in the ground? The king of coaching 'aka' Andy Kennedy has lost 4 of 5 and 5 of 8 to back out of the top 25 and expose them as a team that played NO ONE in the non-conference. A very nice 3-5 conference record in the SEC...

Yet, this seemed to be an attacking point of all our Huggs/NZ friends.

Rebel pride! Where'd Ya'll run to?!

Don't know why I ever start reading the comments after a blog. They're the same every time. I didn't read very far down this time, did someone talk about football recruiting? Maybe I should do it.

Hey, stop talking about the garbage basketball team, what about the NEW bandwagon UC sport - football?

Ugh.

Great defense against a conf. opponent in February who's desparate for a win. Even bad teams play good this time of year. I'll take a Rutgers win over a Connecticut loss any day.

He's right though - if Williamson AND Vaughn start scoring like that from now on - well, you can't double team them both. How about some positive energy around here?

Basketball? Are we talking about Basketball? Now about the Cats, the split personalty of the team showed up once again, either all Vaughn or all Team. If they ever get it together, blowout city! 10:56 - Younger, inexperienced teams tend to play to the level of their opponent. That's why we stay with the better teams, while the lesser teams stay with us...Experience will help with this as they grow. Take the road win and get out of town...

11:01 - Other, more respected sources such as Jay Bilas, Andy Katz, Digger Phelps, Jimmy Dykes, Jim Calhoun, Rick Pitino, Jim Boeheim (among others) have also voiced in with glowing accolades ala Cronins coaching. The fact that you choose to ignore them (or simply didn't know) speaks volumes for YOUR basketball knowledge.

Doh!

at 11:09 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

That was me - I'm not saying that source is some all-knowledgeable source, any more than any of us posters here are such. Just trying to show how Cronin continues to be perceived outside of I-275. Take it as you will, it's just information.

at 11:27 AM Blogger Dave in Omaha said...

11:09 - Cronin also has good rep INSIDE the 275 belt loop. Sadly, you have the "I HATE ALL THINGS UC" set who are readily noticible on this forum (and elsewhere - their envy is overt), as well as the "ANYONE WHO IS NOT BOB HUGGINS COULDN'T POSSIBLY KNOW HOW TO COACH" bunch who are unwilling (or unable) to give Cronin the chance to prove what he can do. I feel sorry for the latter because they are missing a hell of a show. Man, I love Huggs and wish that he had been given a chance to coach UC in the Big East (lord knows he deserved it) but Mick is the man now and has my full support. He and the kids deserve it...

Sadly many of their fans are uncomfortable with the FACT that XU ALWAYS takes a back seat to UC when it comes to local coverage and local "love". Always has and always will. Sadly (for us), in order to assuage their feelings of inadequacy, they feel that they MUST come to UC forums and beg for our recognition and respect. Like the kid we all knew in high school who would drink bong water or run into walls for attention. Sad...

Bearcat Bob: I am not an X fan. I couldn't name 3 players on their whole team. But for a UC fan to take a swipe at X fans when the program is totally in the weeds just makes you look stupid. Xavier should never be able to compete with UC. The fact that they are is an embarrassment to UC.
When the NCAA starts and the Bearcats season is long over, I will at least have a local team to support. That is when I start rooting for X. But there is no point in taking shots at Xavier when your own team is going no where.

Big East (9)
Big 12 (6)
Pac 10 (5)

Dear Dave from Ohmaha,
I only look at this blog on Sundays. I have other things to do but I do enjoy my sports. You seem to have an answer or a comment for every single post on this blog, from the time it starts until the time something else is posted by Bill Koch. Is this all that you do? are you on here 24/7? I probably wouldn't even have noticed, except that almost all of your posts are nothing but name calling and slander, you never have anything to add to a discussion. Just try to remember that you are not going to agree with everything that someone else says and just because you don't agree doesn't mean that trying to discredit the other guy is always the way to go. Just a thought.

at 12:51 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

CSA- Again the most ignorant of jackasses to post here. You bring out bitterness in people CSA because your comments are pathetic and your lack of intelligence echoes clearly in your failure to notice the facts:

-UC has an SOS of #5 in the country
-They have an RPI of 72, better than UK, better than UAB, better than Wake Forest...excellence, maybe not. But DAMN better than last year. So much so that his own peers are giving MC the nod for BEAST Coach of The Year.
-They are in the top 8 of arguably the toughest conference in the league and .500 on the road in league play. The RAC, Freedom Hall, and WVU are NOT easy places to win. Just ask G'Town about Freedom Hall and WVU.
Demanding excellence is not a fault, but in his second year with the paper mache team he pasted together last year, being where we are and having the potential to end at .500 this year is HUGE. But as Dave in Omaha has pointed out, you're the authority so you should know all this.
And to say the UC team is going nowhere? See...ignorance. The team went from a season beginning RPI in the 200's to where they are now...what is that? And why can't X compete with UC? They (Xavier) competed with Tennessee...and they beat Indiana, and Kansas State, and Virginia, and Auburn...they're well coached and have better guards than UC...Again CSA, you're clueless. Get something with face and post it so we can all gain something from it...or just keep playing with your dollhouse...whatever. I accept X will be dancing when UC isn't...part of rebuilding a team Ace...means you may miss some tourneys for a couple years...next year we'll be dancing. I had X going to the Elite Eight before the year started...I still think they can. And I hope they do. I love good basketball and I'll pull for the local boys while UC reloads. But to read your narrow minded trash is old. Give me something I can chew on...and not this horse dung you throw up on here in hopes that it sticks.

Richard "Dick" Jones -

When I have time I add something - often to defend Mick & the program. I don't recall slandering anyone. If I felt like doing that, I'd run to the Xavier board and do so. I'm a UC fan so I stick to the UC blog. I've made plenty of positive posts. In fact, I haven't said anything negative about UC, Mick, Huggins, or even Xavier. In fact, I've said good things about them. I am glad that you take the time to read them though. Sorry that you don't comprehend at the level that you might. Perhaps you might go back and read them again? It'd be wonderful if someone brought a thoughtful or provocative slant on UC. Even from another perspective instead of the tried and true "Mick is small" or 'Mick ain't coach" or "Mick is a clown" etc. would be refreshing.

Richard "Dick" Jones,

Dave in Dmaha seems to defend Mick at any and all opportunities. Some of us can be thankful that improvement has been made over the course of the past six weeks, but also see that individual players haven't progressed much over last year, namely Sikes, Gentry, Williamson and Warren. Both situation testify for and against Cronin's ability to coach or lack of it. That's an objective viewpoint that likely won't be shared by the VERY opinionated persons in both the pro-Mick and anti-Mick camps.

at 1:46 PM Blogger Dave in Omaha said...

1:38 - I've pointed out that the jury is still out on Mick and that many of the players available to him last year were available FOR A REASON. Namely - limited upside. Perhaps he's getting out of them all that they have to give? Perhaps not. That's why I've said that we really won't have a real grasp on what Mick can do (pro or con) until around the time conference play starts next season. All I've said is that from what I can tell (and the results seem to bear this out), Mick is doing great to this point. Interest is growing. Fans are coming back. The team is improving steadily and are fun to watch. If that's looking at things from "UC colored glasses" then so be it. Tell me why I'm wrong? From where he started on day 1, he's come light years. FAST. National pundits seem to agree...

And clearly Mick cares as well...Oh, and to Richard "Dick" Jones, when you live in a place like Omaha and don't give a damn about Husker football, you spend more time on forums like this because it's fun to talk UC sports with like minded people.

So many things to think about...

First, Kennedy, we all love him but he was not offered the team. He may or may not be a better coach than MC but we may never know. He went to a team that was not killed. Remember that MC had zero players when he came here after the recruiting period. Support MC while you can. Things will get better.

As for Cheviot, I spent many of my misplaced days of my youth there. Many happy ladys willing to give it up for a beer. If you want to get lucky go to Cheviot.

Now for X, what a big win over such a great team as St. Jos'. Yes, X will get to the dance but when they face the top from the major conferences which may not be until the second or third round, we will see if they are real or if their fans are just stoned.

Finally, this UC team. They have had many downs and a few great ups. Whenever a team can win on the road in their conference is a great thing. Remember the year Magic Johnson and MSU won in 79, they lost to lowly Northwestern on the road. Get behind this team. They will rebound and be good next year or the next. Yes, our grudge is against Nancy and the BOT but do not carry that grudge over to MC and the team.

I am so tired of so called UC fans bashing the team. This team was dead just two years ago and now we have three road wins in the BE. How many other teams in the BE can say that?

For you OSU, X, MU, and other fans, get off.

at 4:06 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

" individual players haven't progressed much over last year, namely Sikes, Gentry, Williamson and Warren."
___________________________________________________

Do you realize those players arent very good. The only reason they are at UC was because they were available in April, meaning NO ONE ELSE WANTED THEM. There were no better options though and it was smart of Mick to only get 2 year guys that wouldnt clog up this program for too long.

All of those players have had their roles reduced. Warren (who actually is very important to this team. If you dont realize that, you dont watch) was asked to basically not shoot unless the clock is running down. Gentry's minutes have been greatly reduced because he isnt the future. Sikes doesnt play nearly as much anymore (thank god) because there are better options, although they are young and still developing.

To act like what you said is a criticism of Mick is pure stupidity. He has gotten a team to improve while reducing the roles of the experienced guys in order to get the younger players more minutes. It actually speaks to his coaching ability and is the reason why people who know basketball (you know coaches and analysts) consider Mick the front runner for the Big East coach of the year.

If it were up to Mick, players like Warren, Williamson, Gentry and Sikes would have never ended up at UC. To criticize him for that is unbelievably dumb.

We really do get what you're saying. We've been there all along. Thanks for the futile effort, however.

at 6:32 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Look at it this way....the sport shows all had UC out of the BE tourney during preseason AND, the coaches poll had UC out of the BE tourney as well. This team is over acheiving by the expert's standareds. You can say it is because they have great athletes or MC is getting the most out of average players. Either way, UC is performing better than most expected. For some of you basement dwellers out there that like to bash UC, take a deep breath and look at the good things. Quit acting like a bunch of liberal cry baby dems and focus on the positives and not just the negatives.

How about that Xavier - St. Louis game? Talk about escaping an inept team. I guess that made Xavier inept too.

The fact remains that Xavier narrowly escaped UC earlier this year AT THE CINTAS. Had the game been at The Shoe, Xavier probably loses and it goes down as a bad loss. The fact remains that a very good Xavier team pathetically lost to the worst UC team in 20 or more years last season.

The fact is that UC has the 5th toughest schedule in the country to Xavier's 41st toughest schedule.

The fact is that UC plays in one of the 3 toughest conferences in the country and Xavier's conference is a huge dropoff from the Big East.

Get your shots in now Xavier fans, you won't be gloating much longer. You've had your 2 or 3 year run of fun. It's over.

I think it was Missouri that they were looking for. Maybe that St. Louis team that nearly beat the best team in the Country, X, could be the next member of the B10.

Yet another Cincinasti "student"-athlete has made the police blotter. So much for changing the criminal culture down there at Cincinasti College!

UC = UNLV East

...Or maybe not - UNLV has cleaned up its act, has a winning record, & will make the NCAA tourney this year.
