UConn 96, UC 51 - postgame
I've been doing this for a long, long time. I was there for some pretty bad teams during the Tony Yates coaching era, but needless to say I've never seen anything like this. Usually when games get out of hand like this in the first half, the superior teams loses some intensity in the second half and the final score ends up being fairly presentable. That's what happened last year vs. Ohio State. But not today. It just kept getting worse and worse so that I spent most of the second half flipping through the media guide trying to figure out how this loss stacked up historically. What Dan Hoard and I came up with is that it was the worst loss since Feb. 14, 1913 when the Bearcats fell to Denison, 78-29. It was also the worst loss in Big East Conference history.
After it was over, Mick Cronin said this will only make him more determined to get the job done at UC.
“Right now, as bad as this is,” Cronin said, “it’s step two of a four- or five-step process. You’ve got to be tough in this business. You can’t take a job that you know is going to require a ton of toughness on your part and hard work and fortitude to get the job one..you can’t waiver or you should have never taken the job in the first place.”

Looks like Mick's teams are going to be record breaking teams! Mick should donate 1/30 of his salary to
some coach who help this team shoot the ball.
So now its a 4 or 5 step process. I will tell you that if there is not a great amount of improvement next year Mick will be looking for a new job because there will only be 5k max fans there.
What the ....!!!, Mick should have called the Conn police dept. and filled an assault and battery charge after the butt whoppin U Conn put on UC.
BearcatJack
On the bright side, Vaughn has scored something like 501 points on the season so far.
Correction, Mick, it is a four-step process. You've got 4 years to make it happen. That '09-'10 team had better be good. This is embarrassing.
Why isn't that Thad dude posting over here about UC?
Speachless...well without pen.
This was the modern day equivalent of the Alamo. All my playing years in different sports, I have never asked to sit. I may have considered it for the second half if I were a Uconn player today. Wonder if Calhoun still thinks Mick should be COY when he didn't call the dogs off until about a minute to play. Class act!
With these players and this coach, Denison might win in 2008 by 78-29. It would be something now if this team could even beat Presbyterian.
What an absolute disaster the UC administration inflicted upon its own basketball program. Can anybody think of any other university has ever done anything this stupid in all history?
someone that makes 800K+ does not get the chance to explain why they fail in any other business in the world oh but we are at uc!
wish i had that kind of relaxed atmosphere in my world
At this point Yates seems three times better than Mick. Can he really know this little about coaching, preparation and recruiting??? He didn't even have the team ready from an effort standpoint.
Did anyone ask him about the Mitchell suspension-losing connection, Bill? Or what has caused the team COMPLETELY mailing it in?
This was so ugly. I had to walk away a few times just so I could watch it. The embarrassment was complete.
The thought that kept troubling me was that the UC team was simply not putting out, and that they were sending a message to "someone."
But, the more I watched, the more I had wonder if UConn is actually that good. They beat UC in every phase of the game. Thabeet was an irresistible force on the inside.
In any case, this was ugly. The shooting was awful, but if you can't score in the paint, your percentage is going to be low.
Coaching: The bottom line is that UConn didn't do this in our 1-point home game with them. That's one reason to ask the question: "Has UConn gotten that much better, or was the UC team laying down intentionally."
1. If the first, then, Mick's gameplan was awful.
2. If the latter, then something's at boiling point in that locker room and no reporter knows about it or is reporting it. (By the way, WHY WHY WHY did Mitchell leave the team! Put this question to rest.)
Cronin said, "it’s step two of a four- or five-step process"
Unfortunately, Bill, Cronin blew that line. It didn't hit me 'til just now.
It has the appearance of being in control, organized, planned.
But, its effort to appear objective & in control is undercut by the "four- or five-step" comment.
That's hazy isn't it? Is it a four step process or is it a five step process? How about a 6 step process? A three step?
In other words, we're "feeling" our way toward the light.
Wonderful.
Thank you Cronin for a memorable season.
1. First time UC lost the opening game of the season in 40 years. (even the Badger/Yates teams won their first games)
2. First time UC lost the final home game (senior day) in 18 years.
3. Allowing us fans to view a 30-0 run in the CT game.
4. Suffering the worse loss in UC's basketball history in 95 years.
Are Tony Yates or Ed Badger available? Either one would be better than the current coach. Last year 11 wins, this year 13 wins. However, the 2 more wins are cancelled out by the embarassment of this season.
I'll be so glad when this season is over! As a diehard UC fan, I'll probably watch this last game. But honestly, does anybody think they'll even do more than go through the motions?
I'll continue to watch as I always have, but how can anyone think that Cronin is a good coach? Even kids with almost no talent can put forth effort, but I have seen very little to none these past few games. It all has to fall back on coaching.
Does anyone know what Tony Yates is doing these days?
Did I really ask that? That's how bad it's gotten these days.
Bill's blog: the haven for the anti-Mick negative Nellies. Good thing they have some place to go - they're banned everywhere else.
After reading Mick's comments here my first thought is the guy has kahunas of steel. I think the cowards who post here slamming him would crumble or wouldn't have attempted this job in the first place.
Whether Mick can coach UC back remains to be seen. He certainly would get us there faster if we was still in Conference USA. But the jury is still completely out on his coaching ability. These posters are getting very, very tiresome.
Where, oh where is the Super Coach Defense Team when they're needed? And needed they are! This is the most poorly coached, lowest motivated group of UC jersey wearers that I have EVER seen since I've been following UC. Even the talent limited Yates groups put some forth effort. This group of imposters has completely folded on Mick. One question needs to be answered: WHY?!?
Another new all-time low point for the program. Give Mick credit for fielding a team; it is just not BE caliber.
Bet he wishes that he had not continued to invest in the JUCO seniors. The true frosh got very little PT this season, and we barely got to assess their potential. Biggie's foot problems look chronic to me, and if Mick mentions the loss of Mike Williams one more time, I am throwing up. He aint likely to see a minute of action in a real game and if his talent has been inflated as much as that of Adam H, the extent to which he would have contributed is suspect at best.
Wish Mick would act more like a guy with a 5-yr contract and plan. This season was a total waste. Making the BE tourney was no real accomplishment in my book, and the longer-term objective must be getting back to the big dance consistently.
I am a Mick supporter and even I have been depressed for the last 12hours. This loss was debilitating and it basically erases all the good they had done this season. I was excited when they were 13-12 and 8-5 in the conference and of course the fact that Mick was campaigning for post-season play made me excited. However, this recent stretch has given me doubts, but being the idiot I am, I will continue to root for the alma mater.
My 85 year old mother even said the team has quit on mick. In all the decades of basketball at UC, mick has been setting negative records galore. But give mick credit - he will get $4 million no matter how poorly they perform. so who is the real loser here? i am starting to believe that mt has only made one good hire so far.
ps in micks post game comments he said they didn't get a fair shake from the refs. how absurd. he is in way over his head, imho.
Hey, look at it this way...not too long ago (at least I remember it well), the football team got pasted by Penn State at Happy Valley by about 70 points....this too shall pass...
so - what are the 'cats chances at making the NCAA's this year?
haven't read any recent discussions on that topic ...
Mick still lobbying?
As a long time UC homer I cannot imagine taking the time to watch this "team" play again. I will look forward to next year but I am sadder but wiser.
Just think, if Mike Williams does not fully recover and is limited next year as well as the new freshman taking a while to gel I might have another season of wasted tickets.
I hear there are fee increases coming, this will be gut check time.
Yep, CSA was wrong again. The Bearcats backed into tenth place with an impressive 45 point loss at UConn.
I had to listen to Mick Cronin's comments after that one. He actually had to nerve to mention that the officials didn't give them a fair shake.
St CSA
It is absolutely unreal how idiotic and negative some of the comments are on this blog. And unrealistic.
Yes, as an individual game, it was a horrendous effort. Horrible. But, fire Mick? Next year HAS to be the season he turns it around?
People say Cincinnati could never house an NBA team because they don't want to pay the high ticket prices. Hell, I think it's because they couldn't handle the rigors of an 81 game season. Imagine a struggling NBA team here? The fans would be horrible.
As for UC, do any of you who make these absurd comments have any idea just how far this program fell once Kennedy was gone? Do you remember that? Do you understand that this isn't the NBA? You can't hit the free agent market and make quick fixes and you can't make trades (hello Celtics). You rebuild with KIDS. Kids who need time to develop, unless they are the Michael Beasley's or OJ Mayo's of the world. And most kids are not.
It's safe to say that making the BE tournament alone this season was a monumental accomplishment. Getting the quality wins that they did was probably a bit of overachieving, based on the way they've played lately.
If you expect next season to get better, get realistc. Mike Williams is unproven and has health concerns. There's no go to guy besides Vaughn. And while the incoming frosh class is heralded, they're young. And, this year's class as a whole didn't execute as expected.
If this program turns around, you won't see major signs of it until at least two more seasons. So, for all of you anonymous bloggers out there, get out now.
That game yesterday is going to severely hurt UC's bubble chances and Cronin's COY award : )
I'm not a big Huggins fan. I appreciated he turning UC around but his act got old for me.
However, Huggins would sit any player if they did not hustle. He managed and controlled the team and each player. He had discipline but was boring to watch.
What is the punichment that MC deals for constant lack of effort by this players? I don't see or hear of any discipline (except for dismissing the bench warmer Mitchell). The same players start and log the same amount of minutes. MC teams have no discipline and are boring to watch too.
Setting the low expectations of another 3 years to rebuild is absurd. Only the True 5000 or fewer UC Fans will accept another 2 years of losing.
I Lost count and interest in the number of excuses by MC for UC BB losing and not hustling:
Injuries.
Illness.
Poor Talent.
Poor Coaching.
Bad Weather.
Poor Fan Attendance.
Poor recruiting.
Not enough time to recruit.
Poor Background checking of recruits.
No player skill development.
No hustle or effort.
Not bringing it every nite in the BE.
No size.
No strength and toughness.
Poor shooting.
No rebounding.
No Teamwork.
Not following coaches game instructions.
No consistancy.
Not closing out winnable games.
Whatever Alvin's problems are?
ETC.
I ask you. What is the role of a D1 coach in the BE?
It wasn't as close as the score suggested.

Now this was a good blog post. Objective, and without the "funny" nicknames.
There must be serious improvement next year or even though I support Mick now, he should be on the hot seat.
Next year should be the bubble year for Mick Cronin. His team should win 20 games or UC needs to find a new coach.
Deonta Vaughn has been announced to 1st team all Big East. Will be announced tomorrow in NYC.
Per Big East Awards:
Coach of the Year: Jim Calhoun, Hall of Fame coach for the University of Connecticut
With his team 11-5 overall and 2-3 in conference, Calhoun never lost faith in his team. Also up for consideration: John Thompson III (Georgetown), Rick Pitino (Louisville), Mike Brey (Notre Dame), Bob Huggins (West Virginia).
All-Conference Honors
Luke Harangody (Notre Dame), A.J. Price (Connecticut), Joe Alexander (West Virginia), Kentrell Gransberry (South Florida), Sam Young (Pittsburgh), Roy Hibbert (Georgetown), Jonny Flynn (Syracuse), Brian Lang (Seton Hall), Kyle McAlarney (Notre Dame), Deonta Vaughn (Cincinnati)
UC's Take:
No mention of Mick Cronin.
Vaughn 1st team Big East? Deonta is nice player but for him to be 1st team as sophmore means that the rest of guard play in big east must be weak. IMHO
CSA -
I agree. The score actually made it look closer than it was (sad huh).
Regardless, what you saw was a team that simply didn't care run into a poor game against a good team. I can not blame Mick on all of UCs problems, he wasn't exactly handed a star studded team.
Also, I have an excuse to add to that list: Weather Delay.
ON A POSITIVE NOTE - DEONTA VAUGHN WAS NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-BIG EAST. THIS IS A GREAT HONOR FOR SOMEONE WHO WORKED HIS TAIL OFF THIS YEAR - YEAH HIS PRODUCTION HAS SORT OF FADED IN THE LAST FEW GAMES, BUT THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE THE ONLY LEGIT SCORING THREAT AND NOBODY ELSE CAN SHOOT (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF WILLIAMSON).
Anon 10;:49,
It's impossible to answer that question at UC. "It is what it is." We have a mid-major coach. We don't have a D-1 coach.
3/10/08
RPI update:
WVU 34
Mississippi 42
Cincinnati 113
Wonder how that happened?
Here's a big ol' "Hang with 'em" to Mick...Ugly,ugly game and a bitterly disappointing finish to the season...I'll continue to support Mick until he proves that he can't get the job done. He's proven that he can't beat better teams consistently (who can?) so far. Why don't we wait and see what he can do when the playing field is a little more even? His classes coming in look good. Lets see how he coaches them up before running him out of town...
4:41 -
Those teams are coached by proven, quality coaches. WVU should easily make the tourney and Ole Miss has a legit chance in Kennedy's SECOND year. And he took over a program devoid of talent. Not to UC's extent, but still with little talent. Proportioinally he has been light years better than Mick.
Why didn't the administration just Hire Andy and save us all the trouble? They didn't have to force him to denounce his friendship with Huggins.
And I see Mick wasn't the Big East Coach of the Year or even one of the top-5 candidates. Stunning. Of course Huggins made the list for his coaching this season.
listen all you so called uc fans be masd, even angry about the loss. it was certainly an embarassment. however, stop pounding on the coach. the team just got a butt whippin. end of story. the cats will be back and they will be a much better team than they showed yesterday. these are kids playing a game. if they are yor team then support them and stop acting like they planned on getting beat so badly. mc is trying his best.
if you are a uc fan , then support the team. peroid end of story. they did not plan to play so poorly nor the coaching staff plan to have the team go through what they did. what goes around comes around. quit crying and start backing the team.

"mc is trying his best."
That is by far the scariest thing I have ever read on this blog. If that's his best, that means it will only go downhill from here. How can we EVER forget a 30-0 run? We made history, folks, on March 9, 2008 in Connecticut.
Plenty of folks have burned on Mick in this forum all season. I have yet to see any of these "John Wooden seni-pros" mention what their expectataions of this team were. Truth be told the expectations were bottom 2 of the conference. That's what the pundits said. All I hear is Mick sucks and he's over his head and he can't coach...Our upperclassmen are not good. That was the best we could get at such a late recruting date. Why do so many NOT want to give Mick a fair chance with a level playing field? I just don't know why so many dislike him. It has to be personal, because he's been a successful coach in his career so far, and he hasn't had a chance here yet. I think a lot of you dislike him because he was hired by Zimpher. What a bunch of pathetic women. Mick is respected by his peers. Too bad he can't get the same from the UC "fans". I love his postgame comments about how it just makes him more determined. Good that's what we need. He loves UC and he cares about this program. Give the man a chance, or please explain why you won't. He's got some real talent coming in here the next 2 years. I'll be waiting for you on the bandwagon once he starts to kick some ass, or I'll be joining you in seeking change should he not get it done..Fair enough?
Mick is lower than a mid major coach, if anyone disagrees with a straight face, I want you on my poker team.
Mick has had the team consistently regressing since the start of the year. Nice comments about the NCAA, I bet he wants to forget that comment. If anyone disagrees with me on that one you are completely wrong and can test me on a Duneden Mifflin IQ test.
Sippin' Mick Moniker Maker
Mick doesn't need to worry about Hugg's very outspoken goals to crush Mick and annhilate UC's program. Mick's own homeys here in Cincinnati will take care of that.
Cincinnati - where they eat their own.
Dave -
Mick wasn't even voted one of the top-5 coaches in the Big East in regard to the Coach of the Year award. Which means he was ranked toward the middle or lower in the conference after a "great coaching job" by his standards (according to some here at least).
He supposedly had real talent coming in this year (top-15 recruiting class) too yet they have shown very little even at the end of this year.
would love to see mc's four or five step process (to what?).
any chance on getting hios definition of this posted Bill?
and as for this post:
"if you are a uc fan , then support the team. peroid end of story. they did not plan to play so poorly nor the coaching staff plan to have the team go through what they did. what goes around comes around. quit crying and start backing the team."
uc fans are not allowed to post anything negative? Is this you Oscar R? We know who you are -
Welcome to bottom-feeder status, Bearcats. The top Big East schools can pencil in victories it looks like. This team just up and quit on Coach Mick Cronin 5 games ago. Isn't anybody at the Enquirer asking WHY???
