Kelly likes Grutza - sort of
So spring practice is over and as of now, Dustin Grutza is UC’s starting quarterback. But will he be when the games begin to count next fall?
Obviously, if Ben Mauk gets a favorable ruling from the NCAA, Mauk will be the quarterback.
But if he doesn’t?
It’s almost amusing to listen to Kelly attempt to praise Grutza. He tries to say nice things about him, but it seems forced. You would think that Grutza, with two years of experience as a starter, with more knowledge of Kelly’s offense than any of the other quarterbacks (except Mauk) would be the perfect guy to start this year, giving Demetrius Jones and Chazz Anderson a chance to get their legs under them before one of them takes over next year.
But there doesn’t seem to be much enthusiasm for that idea coming from Kelly.
Listen to this quote from Saturday after the spring game in which Grutza completed 13 of 18 passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception.
“I like Dustin Grutza,” Kelly said. “Ben Mauk is a proven commodity in terms of playing all year. If we get Ben Mauk back, we’ll be happy. But look, we can’t cry over it. Dustin Grutza will have to be the guy and we’re going to have to win with him. We can’t trade him. We can’t get another guy for him. We think he can do the job. If he’s our starter, we’ll get it done. We’ll find a way”
So what do you think? Assuming Mauk doesn’t return, will Grutza be the starter in the fall. And if he is, how do you feel about that? Can UC win games with Grutza at quarterback?

If Grutza comes out leaps and bounds ahead of the other guys then Kelly will start him. Otherwise I have to believe that either D. Jones or Chazz will be the starters. This year will be one that is too good to waste though. We're going to lose our All American punter and D Lineman plus a ton of other experience on the defensive side. We can't waste all that with a potentially mediocre young quarterback if Grutza really is better than them just to get the young guy up to speed on the field. Especially with Oklahoma as the 2nd game of the year.
What probably is going to happen is the EKU game will be their final tryout. Grutza takes the 1st quarter, Chazz takes the 2nd, Demetrius takes the 3rd and the best of the 3 takes the 4th and starts the Oklahoma game. With all that said, I really hope Mauk gets another year to put all this to rest.
So coach, is Grutza your quarterback for next season? "Yes, absolutely, kinda, sorta - well not really."
Hey, I do like the kid, but he is not the prototypical guy for Kelly's offense. If need be, he will start the season, but don't be surprised if we see a 2 headed monster at QB!
If Mauk doesn't play this season, I would personally like to see Chaz Anderson get the nod as QB. Nothing against Grutza, but I saw Chaz a couple of times while he was in HS and I was real pleased when he committed to the Bearcats.
PS - Just got around to renewing my season tickets today, looking forward to a great season!!
I don't think Kelly has liked Grutza from Day 1. That's why Nick Davila started the International BOwl two years ago.
I think if either Anderson or Jones looks remotely ready to start, one of them will take the first snap against Eastern on August 28.
Of course, if Mauk gets a 6th year, all bets are off
The quarterback situation is and will be an interesting debate.
Watching the game Grutza appears to be the most ready right now.
If we had to win game next Saturday on May 3rd you would have to start him.
On the other side of the coin its pretty clear that at least 3 of the other quarterbacks are signifigantly more talented than him... (in alphabetical order) Anderson, Collaros and Jones.
Each showed very impressive flashes.
Though they wouldn't say it publicly the coaching staff has got to hope one of those guys steps up big time in the fall.
Simply because their upsides are much higher than Grutza's.
Granted I haven't been watching the day to day practices but it appears that Tony Pike is the odd man out.
We can win games with Grutza.
But there will be a night when we desperately need a huge play out of the quarterback.
I just don't think he has that ability.
He'll give all he has got, but the real question is that enough in a pinch.
Grutza does not see the field and is a poor improvisor. If his first receiver is covered., he often cannot pick out a secondary receiver. I have seen him miss wide open receivers, often for touchdowns on more than a few occasions.
Grutza is terrible! The reason why Davila started ahead of him for kelly is because he is a better passer what a novel concept. In Dantinos offense he rarely threw high risk passes so you could hide some of grutzas flaws but not all of them! If he starts this year then that says how poor our backups are!
I think BK's quotes convey what many fans feel, which is essentially that if they have to go with DG at QB, well, they'll do it. Bottom line is, if he was excited about the prospects of that, being as outspoken as he is, he'd say it. He isn't.
BK would love DJ to be his #1 GUY, but it's clear he's not ready yet. Can they be a winning team with DG? Yes. But he lacks the intangibles Mauk has. Mauk reminded me a lot of a UC version of Brett Favre...not always pretty, but he's gutsy and always found a way to get the job done.
You can't teach that to players. They either have it or they don't. Here's hoping Maul returns and DJ has another year to be groomed as the future QB at UC.
Seems to me that Kelly and maybe other staff members seem to not give Grutza a fair shake. Possibly he's not exciting enough for them or possibly it's a personality thing. He may not be the best QB in the nation, but he's far from the worst. It just looks like BK has his mind already made up that Grutza will not be the guy. Just seems a bit unfair and probably disheartening to Grutza.
The great thing though is that we have a group of potentially very good QBs. And a coach that could bring out the best in them. It'll be interesting and fun to watch their development and see who will rise to the top when it's all said and done.
Grutza not starting is an example of a kid acceptable for recruitment as a C-USA QB versus what developed into a Big East QB position. Too Bad. He seems like a nice kid.
I don't think it is a case of the coaching staff not "liking" Grutza.
I think it comes down to talent, to his credit Dustin gives you every ounce of skill and talent he has. Always has played with a ton of heart.
But the coaches know they have at least 3 other quarterbacks and possibly a 4th who has more talent and potential upside than Grutza does.
The problem is do you play Grutza and win some games that the younger QB's could end up blowing early in the year.
OR do you give those guys the experience that you hope will pay off later.
For better AND for worse Grutza is a known quantity... the other QB's as talented as they are still have never done it.
