3-1 in the Big East

When the UC football team got ranked this year, won 10 games and started to sell out Nippert Stadium, I witnessed something I wasn't sure I would ever see from the Bearcats. It was - and still is - quite a remarkable development. But I think that what the basketball team is doing is even more remarkable. After watching UC lose at UAB, I wondered in print if this team would win another game. I wasn't trying to be facetious. I looked at the schedule and really didn't see any games I thought the Bearcats would be favored to win. I basically wrote that in my story the next day. The next time I talked to Mick Cronin he went out of his way to tell me - without being a jerk about it or complaining about what I had written - that the world wasn't coming to an end. He has the benefit of seeing his players in practice every day - reporters are not allowed that luxury - so he knew that the young guys were getting better. He was right, of course, although I doubt if even Mick believed his team would beat Louisville, Syracuse and Villanova. Can they keep this going? Certainly, after what I've witnessed during the past two weeks, I'm not going to say they can't. It will be fun to watch the rest of the season unfold, don't you think?

It has been a lot of fun and will only get more entertaining as they continue to improve. Too bad we can't get those losses to Belmont and Big Girls State back - a 10-6 record would go very nicely with the 3-1 mark in BE play.

Bill, there are a bunch of us that are now eating crow. The Bearcats are getting better as time progresses. I am sure there will be some losses we won't like, but UC is playing in the Big East and that is a difficult conference. I hope we win at least 8 Big East games. More than that is icing on the cake.

I agree with you Bill. BK had a full senior class and good players to coach when he took over. Mick had to build this program from scratch and what he's accomplished this year is nothing short of amazing. I felt the freshman and Vaughn could win games at UC, but I didn't realize it would be this soon.

People keep referring to this as a young team, and by some measures it is. But it is also a team with a significant number of senior contributors who are playing with senior urgency, and they are being combined with freshmen who are improving week by week (and who haven't had to play so much that they'll run into "the wall" that many freshmen encounter when they play a 30-game college season for the first time).

It is definitely fun. Anytime a team overachieves and does it with great effort -- like Andy Kennedy's UC team of two years ago -- you can't help but buy into that emotionally when you watch them play. Notre Dame on the road after the Irish got trounced at Marquette yesterday is suddenly a big, big game for both of these teams.

Most fans were probably thinking the same thing as you Bill. UC was pretty bad early on, but with Xavier and Memphis games you could see the team getting better.

Bearcats I suspect have greatly exceeded most of their fans' expectations. After their early losses I felt this yrs team was worse than last yr - coach Cronin said this team is much stronger than 06/07 team and he's proving that. He's showing he's a very good coach just as coach Miller did with his doubters.

As an X fan my hat is off to Cronin and the Bearcats. Their future looks bright and it's good for BB in Cincy to have two strong programs again.

You've got Gates coming in next yr and the Muskies have their 6'11' guy Frease, so looking for a lotta great BB from both programs.

Bill, if you really seriously thought that the team might not win again after the low point, then you really either a) don't understand college basketball, how coaches and players develop during a season, and what kind of coach UC has; and/or b) it is yet another example of your negative bias toward the program and need to put that in print. I have come to expect such behavior from those in the fan base who know next to nothing and/or have an axe to grind with respect to UC, but we would like to think more of a veteran beat writer (and UC alum). But alas...

A big salutations to all who were down on "mid-major-Mick"...This team has a long way to go to get back to familiar territory, but the growth truly is fun to watch. This team is proving to the nay sayers (and better yet to themselves) that they can compete AND WIN in the Big East.

Some of us knew it all along. I miss the hell out of Huggs, but he's gone. Mick is doing great. The king is dead. Long live the king

Bet they'd like to have that St John's game back...OUCH.

Keep it going Cats...

Dave in Omaha is always correct. Read what he writes. He told us so.

Always correct? Nah. I was against the Huggins dismissal from day 1, but supported Cronin from HIS first day. I love the Bearcats. I think he's the real deal. I also love the fact that he WANTS to be here more than anywhere else. He also deserves a little patience given the empty cupboard when he got here. I may not know all, but those expecting 20 win seasons so soon know nothing. Thanks for your condescending comment though. When you expose yourself as a jerk, it saves everyone else the trouble of reading through your drivel. Of course if you lack the guts to put a handle on yourself it makes it tough. Nicely done.

Dave in Omaha with the handle...as if that truly identifies you,I seriously doubt the people who follow UC expected 20 win seasons real soon.I also commend Bill for admitting he was wrong. But the way they looked early on gave him good reason to say what he said.I thought the same thing myself as probably did many others.Glad to see the turnaround though and hope the improvement continues.Signed,"who am I".

who am I..

My handle identifies me as the same poster and separates me from 20 anonymous posters...

judging by the anti-Mick sentiment here and other places, fans expected a seamless transition from Huggs, and held it against Mick...

it has been nice so far, but playing AT ND will be part of the proof of the pudding. a close game will be very telling!

ND has the longest home winning streak in the Country. It will be almost imposible to win there. I hope UC can win there but more realistically, I hope they show a good game and good effort in what will probably be a close loss.

I would like to thank the XU posting earlier. It is very seldom that we see anything positive from XU in regards to UC. He is absolutely correct that it is best for the City to have two great bball programs.

Cautious is the word on the record so far. Caught Louisville just prior to their big game against Kentucky (looking ahead?), Syracuse without Devendorf and another - Nova without a starter too.

Fools gold, perhaps?

We as fans are so desperate for wins, each one is gushed over. Let's see how the season plays out before assessing the job mc has done. Same as last year - not fair to assess that one cause of the 'lack' of talent. Right.

The Cats are putting it together and although an ncaa birth will most likely not happen this year we could make the NIT which all things considered, would be great and give the kids something to build on moving forward.

As for Cronin, he's a great coach and I for one am glad he's here. Hopefully he can win in the ncaa, something Huggs had trouble doing despite being seeded 1,2, or 3 almost every year. Nobody likes a paper tiger, or in our case, a paper Bearcat. Go Mick and Go Cats!!!!

09:39...I can give a little credence to your opinions on why the 'Cats snuck out wins against the three aforementioned teams. But give credit where credit is due...Louisville was a preseason Top 5 pick and favored to win the conference. Going into Freedom Hall and coming away with a win is big no matter how you look at it. A win against Syracuse and Jim Boeheim? I'll take that anytime. What can you say about last years last second loss (by one point) AT the Carrier Dome? Devendorf played 34 minutes in that game along with Demetrius Nichols, Terrance Roberts et al. We almost beat them there. The 'Nova win was a huge confidence booster. 'Nova just came off a big win AT Pitt. Lastly, we didn't even have three BEAST wins last year and we've surpassed the two from last year and only in mid-January. I agree that an away game AT ND will be a huge test. As will the following five games after that...against Pitt, UConn, at Seton Hall, at WVU, and then a home game with Marquette. Cautious,sure...but don't discount job that Mick has done. The fact that he had the same team last year as he does this year (essentially), to bring three freshman off the bench and to already have three W's in league play says something. As a 17 year season ticket holder I don't need to let the season play out to know that Mick is doing a hell of a job and the kids are responding. I know as a fan of the game that they are still rebuilding this team and I wouldn't expect any postseason play until next year. This year would be an absolute bonus to make it to the NIT...or even the BEAST Tourney. They're well on their way and I hope it continues.

Dave in Omaha is dead on. Most "fans" would have volunteered to help Mick pack and drive him to the airport after last season. Mick started from absolute scratch. He's actually done a better job than I expected. Ever see the movie "Necessary Roughness?" I'm not kidding...this is the same scenario. A realistic goal for the rest of this season is to make the conference tourney. An NIT berth would be an awesome feat.
