The day after
Mick Cronin has done his best not to let himself get carried away with one big win, even if it was over Louisville and his mentor, Rick Pitino. That's as it should be. Before practice today, he talked mainly about moving forward and staying hungry. But he had to be feeling a measure of vindication, too.
Cronin inherited a nearly impossible situation here and while no one should feel sorry for him because he knew what he was getting into, that hasn't made it any less difficult, especially after he lost Hernol Hall and Adam H. last year and Mike Williams this year.
As the losses mounted, especially early this year when things were supposed to be better, some fans began to wonder if he was the right man for this job, but he shrugged off the criticism, remained positive and kept coaching his players. He should be credited for that.
And so should his seniors, who took a beating all last year but for the most part kept plugging away, doing their best against overwhelming odds.
"It was neat to see their reaction after the Louisville game in the locker room," Cronin said today, "especially the returning guys, because last year was so hard on them. They felt like they were being disrespected by the way other teams treated us. We felt disrespected by a lot of things that went on last year from the way things happened in the Big East because we didn’t have a bench and we didn't have any size.
"I kept telling them when the help arrives you’ve got to be ready to play hard and play smart and we’ll get our payback. We’re not going to go 18-0 but we’ll get a chance at our payback. It was nice to see those guys really get a chance to enjoy a big win."

Makes you feel good reading that stuff right there!!!... If this team comes out hungry again in NYC against St. John's on Saturday I think they'll get win #2 in the Big East... C'mon 'Cats, keep it rollin'!!!
Bill,
Will you be gracing us with any inside recruiting info?...
Words can't express how nervous I was watching that game yesterday. I love Bearcat basketball and the feeling I had after the win was great. My wife laughs at me because I get so nervous watching the games - I explain to her that I don't want to be labled as a bandwagon fan and that I want to root as hard for these teams (the last two years) as I did when UC was thumping people. I realize that I am a total nerd and the players and Mick could care less, but as an alum and long time fan, I can't wait for UC basketball to restake it's claim as a POWERHOUSE!!
Great post Bill. Thanks for the updates!
The win over Lousville was very encouraging and definitely a confidence builder for the team.
I TiVo'd the game because I wasn't able to watch it live. This allowed me to really examine the game and a few things that I wanted to share.
1. The play of John Williamson last night was pretty impressive. Looking at his stat line; 6-11 for 13 points and 4 rebounds. I think would be a little misleading. He was able to handle the ball strong in the high post of the UL zone, something that Sikes wasn't able to do, as well as set a few good cross screens for Vaughn to get the open look for three. Other than a few forced passes when he tried to drive the lane, I felt his play was the best of the night for the Bearcats.
2. I was very skeptical early on with the play of Vaughn. I felt that as a PG he wasn't doing a very good job of getting his teammates involved. As I watched this game, it appears that Cronin is finally getting through to him to find his teammates and make the extra pass. His defense leaves more to be desired, but it's nice to see that he is improving as the season continues.
Lastly, I know it's difficult to criticize a coach who took his team on the road against a rival and came out of top, but as I watched the final five seconds of the game, I had to replay it a few times, I felt Cronin mis handled the last position. With five seconds remaining, he sub his defensive unit which were; Williamson, Gentry, Bishop, McClain, Warren. Which is fine if this is your best five that ok. Somehow John ended up guarding Sosa, now if the thinking is to use his length to block a three, I can understand that. I think putting Gentry on the ball gives you a better chance to get the stop, b/c of his lateral quickness is faster than John's and he still has length over Sosa. I have no idea what the other four players were doing, it was almost like a zone, which put Warren under the basket to try and rebound a missed shot. I know i'm knit picking, but this mistake could have cost them this game.
Bill,
Josh is a better dresser. Sale at the Gap?
It truely amazing how Mick Cronin has evolved this team to actually being competitive in two years. I love to see those Mick Cronin haters right now he has his basketball team playing at a level I didn't think i would see for another couple years. Let it sink in We just walked into Freedom Hall and took out Louisville.....I'm excited!!
This is a relief for me because I never stopped supporting Mick and the heavy amount of bashing on him was driving me nuts. He started from negative zero and then had to endure loosing the services of the four players previously mentioned. To go into Freedom Hall and come out a winner this soon under those circumstances is pretty impressive for sure. I loved Huggs but when he was gone, Uc was loosing top recruits to other schools. Mick turned that around immediately. I cant be happier the Cincinnati kid (Mick) is leading my favorite team. He can get it done on all fronts and he's home grown. I hope to see him have a long lasting tenure. Mick and his players will get the Shoe back to full capacity and save Uc basketball. I remeber Huggins complaining over his last few years here because we quit going to the games. The place was'nt rockin no more because of all the hype and then the big letdown year after year in the tournament. I really think we have better days ahead of us with Mick. The hometown boy has chance to be local legend. What a story it could be 20-30 yrs from now.
On a side note, any word on how Ch 19 not carrying the games affects which games we will(or will not)see this year???
Im bubbling inside. UC is the only team that makes my hands shake and my heart drops when i hear the name "bearcats" on tv or radio. I turn into a 8 year old when they take a lead, and turn 60 when they lose! I was there when we lost to mich 92. Iowa state and the infamous "travel" call! Mississippi state and our near miss to the final four. West virginia last second shot that tips the fingers and still banks in.UCLA in overtime. Kenyon's broken leg!!THE LOSS TO KENTUCKY!!!I bleed red. Im still here. Im still watching. Cronin has a Cincinnati size chip on his shoulder and he's coming. The Bearcats are coming!!!!This is the UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI AND WE ARE STILL HERE!!!
On the day of the game UL vs. UC I had to drive in the snow to Washington, IN; I listened to the game on the radio, it reminded me of listening to the Bearcat games in the early 1960s..........this team did not choke......they have been poised for success since the XU game............GO BEARCATS,GO MICK!!!!!
Anon 4:25: It was a zone with Williamson at the top. Cronin discussed it after the game on the radio. He wanted to prevent them from driving (and getting fouled) and force an outside shot. The shot was very quick, and that allowed for the extra chance inside. But I thought zone was the right move. As Cronin said, zone effectively sealed off half of the court with the inbounds pass being on the side, and prevented the refs from getting the chance to call a foul for the home team that could have decided the game. Either way, it took U of L out of what they wanted, which according to Pitino was to drive left and dish to Jerry Smith for a jumper.
