Football news

This from our prep writer Tom Groeschen: Colerain High School defensive tackle Brandon Mills has orally committed to UC. Mills, 5-10, 260, was a first-team AP all-state selection. He registered 60 tackles last season with 12.5 sacks and 27 tackles for loss.

Also, UC football SID Kelby Siler reports that UC cornerback Mike Mickens, who had filed the paperwork for the NFL draft, has decided to return to UC for his senior year. Mickens was projected as third-round pick.

i've heard mills compared favorably to t. byrd - welcome brandon!

i think that mike mickens is making the right choice here. he needs to put on some weight and have another good season - if so he can push even higher in the draft next year.

Do we have any other seniors or anyone else who is projected to go in the draft?

Mickens is a nice CB. These are rare in the NFL. He should go PRO but I'm thrilled he is staying at UC.

Remember Hawkins? Mickens is way better than Hawkins. Hawkins was always around the ball but never seemed to make the play. Mickens however is both around the ball and makes the play.

This is great about Mickens. He will really lead this team next year.

Mills seems a bit small. Did the big-time programs over look him because of his size like they did Byrd?

Undersized guys can be still very good players, like Byrd. At 250lbs nobody could block Tony Carvitti either.

5'10" seems small. Hopefully he makes up for it in speed, but at 260, I'm not sure he can be that fast. Where else could you use a 5'10" lineman?
