Mauk appeal filed
UC today filed the appeal to the NCAA in an attempt to gain another year of eligibility for quarterback Ben Mauk. You all know the story. Mauk suffered devastating injuries to his arm and shoulder in the 2006 season opener while playing as a junior for Wake Forest. He enrolled in graduate school at UC after graduating from Wake and took advantage of an NCAA rule, since rescinded, that allowed him to play for the Bearcats in 2007 without sitting out a transfer year. Now UC is petitioning to get back the year he missed at Wake after the injury. UC compliance director Maggie McKinley estimates that the school should have an answer in about three weeks.

UC fans should hope and pray. That kid was really impressive. And give
that shoulder another nine months to heal...
A lot of people say Kelly did it
with Dantonio's kids and that is
true to an extent. But I don't
think you can overestimate what
Mauk brought to the squad. And
this from a fan who was not
anti-Grutzen.
I have no optimism for Bens return. When you consider that it was a "loophole" that allowed him to play this year, and that the NCAA since closed the loophole, it doesn't look promising.
Three weeks ay?
Bill, you should make a note of that-- is that an accurate estimation, would you say? Or is it one of those you never quite know, type of things?
UC will hear from the NCAA around the second week of September.
I know that BK is optimistic about the chances but looking at the history of NCAA's decisions concerning UC, it does not look good.
I guess it comes down to whether the NCAA wants to "let" more teams reach the top 25.
Who is heir apparent to Mauk?
Hey, Bill, what is the NCAA rule in the rulebook? What's your take on whether he fits the rule?
He did play in one game that season, so it's a judgment call. My guess is that the rule is based on (1) How many games or how much playing time, (2) whether he's with the same team or not, (3) if he could have recovered the year of the injury.
No guarantees in life.
Who predicted that Robby Schoenhoft would not make it at OSU; and end up at Delaware St.?
I wonder if he would have started at UC?
The kid that transferred from Notre Dame (his name escapes me) is already penciled in as the starting QB for next season. Mauk is done. The chances of him getting another year of eligibilty are slim to none and slim has left town.
No offense, but anyone who saw Schoenhoft play in high school could have predicted this. Sure, he has a big arm, but no control, no accuracy, and he can't move.
Division I football is going away from the "prototype" 6'6" QB....school by school.
Can you list the pros and cons to his appeal?
college is placing greater emphasis on mobile QBs to accomodate the spread offense. However, the taller mobile QB will always be preferred over the short mobile QB.
Short QBs get too many passes deflected at the line of scrimage by the ever growing size and hops of defensive linemen.
Wow! Short QBs are the worst. We wouldn't want the next Joe Montana on our team!!!
Did anyone hear Ben and Haruki on with Lance yesterday? They were strong.
Harukis talked about the Hula Bowl and the change in UC over his career, calling his experience a dream come true.
Ben said there might be a Plan B if his initial NCAA appeal doesn't fly. Any ideas?
