Mick Cronin on receiving Top 25 votes
I just asked Mick point blank if he thinks UC deserves to be ranked in the Top 25 with a 9-9 record. Here's his answer:
"I think we played the hardest non-league schedule in the country early, for a big-name team, with the amount of road games that we played. I think our record reflects that. It’s just nice to be recognized. I don’t really pay attention. I’m biased toward the high majors even though I spent three years at Murray State. I had two great teams there but we couldn’t have stood up in a conference like this. We could beat a team on a given night but I see teams ranked – and I’m not going to name names – but I see teams ranked, and it’s nice for them, but having been at that level, if you throw those kind of teams from the lower conferences that do get ranked, it’s my belief that if you throw them in the Big East, they’d struggle mightily."

9-9 is NOT a top 25 team. Regardless of who we beat.
That said, the marked and sustained improvement is worthy of notice.
Naysayers, eat it.
did he answer the question? sounds like nancy drivel.
For all intents and purposes, BCD is right. No way a 9-9 team is top 25.
However, they are playing like a top 25 team right now. Is it a fluke? I don't know, but even the losses are looking better.
I can't say that I've ever seen a team come so far in half a season. When this year started out, I thought they were worse than last year, and I thought they would nary win a game in the Big East.
Were they underachieving? Were they missing Warren? Or are they just getting that much better? I don't know but I'm enjoying the ride...
Mick is right. Alot of teams in the Top 25 would rack up a ton of losses in the Big East.
"I think we played the hardest non-league schedule in the country early"
What is he talking about?????
Needless to say, the team has improved much. I think that those votes are just a sign of respect.
Has anyone said UC is a top 25 team?
No. The point is UC is receiving votes that are deserved, regardless of their record being 9-9.
UC has won 5 of their last 7 games and that includes wins over Louisville, Syracue, Villanova, and Pittsburgh.
It could easily be argued that going 5-2 over that schedule makes UC a top 25 team, or at least very deserving of getting votes.
It's a positive thing for UC. Why try to turn it into a negative?
I agree. Any team with a 9-9 record is not one of the best 25 teams in the nation. That being said, it's turned out to be a fun season. Let's focus on the Big East for now. The conference tourney is within our reach.
Also wanted to say thanks to Bill for doing such a great job on the blog. I was worried about getting news after Josh left, but you're doing a fantastic job Bill! Keep it up!
I hope Cronin was talking about Dayton.
Boooooooooo Dayton!
Somebody voted for the Bearcats in the AP Poll and somebody else voted for them in the Coaches Poll. That is two positive things.
Yes, the Bearcats don't deserve a Top 25 ranking. Yes, they aren't one or two wins away from being ranked. I think they are four wins away.
UConn at home
Seton Hall away
WVA away
Marquette at home
Two average Big East teams and then two difficult Big East teams. Win those four and then the Cats will be ranked.
The Bearcat faithful have to be faithful. You gotta believe.
are we voting ytd or now? suppose in the last 2 weeks we had beaten NC, kansas, memphis, duke and ucla by 20 points or more and our starters all sat out the 4th qtrs. we didnt want to make them angry when they came back to our place! but our record was 9-9 ytd. should/would we be ranked in the top 25? bet your sweet bippy we would be. ytd is not relevant! however, this team should be rated when it has the attitude that when they have built a 10 point lead that it is time to make it 20. not can we hold on for dear life? that attitude is coming soon!
Dayton, XU, Memphis are tough games and then the Big East. I think the question is not whether the Bearcats are worthy to be in the top 25, but are they now playing like a top 25 team. This team is playing competitive basketball and that is what most UC fans wanted THIS YEAR. There are some who want to knock every bit of success a team has, critics. Someone has to earn a living as a critic.
Getting a few points in the rankings is meaningless, in and of itself. However, with that said, the press that UC has gotten recently from some great wins is priceless...and just the fact that our name is shown in the listing of ranked teams adds to that!
Go Cats...keep it up and more points and a ranking will follow...and that would be very meaningful!!!!!
Very good point 5:38! Someone did vote for the 'cats in the coaches poll. Koch, don't you want to piss all over that too?
"Anonymous" questioned Mick's statement that UC played the toughest non-conference schedule. Per Jerry Palm's collegerpi.com site this morning (1/23) UC's strength of schedule is 9. Only Big East team that played a tougher schedule is Syracuse.
Mick's point also included ON THE ROAD. Syracuse, Notre Dame, etc. rarely leave home. UC played at Xavier, at NC State, at Illinois State, and at UAB. Who else in a BCS conference played 4 non-conference true road games against decent teams? Anyone?
9:28, what other BCS BB program in the nation got kicked in the teeth by their university president and some of the BOT like UC? Had they not been kicked to the bottom of the Big East by these clowns, they would have NEVER played an away game at a place like Illinois State. GO BEARCATS!!!!
"I think we played the hardest non-league schedule in the country early
OH NO!
The UC Coach is drinking again!
UC has one of the top 10 toughest schedules in the country. But what else is new.
I could care less if they are 9-9. They are playing like a top 25 team at the moment. This is why they received votes. I could not be happier and find it funny all the naysayers are hating this.
Bill - Sounds like MC's comments about high majors and his view of BE is a veiled reference to his envy of X and the pub. their getting this yr.
Am I off base or is MC playing a subtler version of the Huggs tactic of dising his cross town rival?
Hey x fans, Mick said nothing about x. Are you that self concious and lacking self esteem that you need to find reason to hate Mick?
According to individuals from x, the only reason for UC's existence is to do something negative towards x. Get over yourselves. It is this behavior that makes the nation consider you a mid-major.
Bill,
I just want to tell you that you were great on the Homer this morning. I'm glad I had an opportunity to hear your comments. Keep up the good work and the Blog success will come! Lets see these youngsters step up tonite, mark my words, Bishop is going to step up tonite, we all know he's not scared to let it go. Go CATS!
I think Mick is talking about Drake, Saint Mary's, Baylor, all ranked teams that I think would be crushed in the BEAST.
10:24 - I just asked Bill's opinion. I like MC and the coaching job he's done most recently. Team is playing great defense. Wish him and the Bearcats the best - and soon they're be two very good BB teams in Cincy.
Self esteem is for kids - adults have ethics and character.
Bill - Good interview with Cutler this a.m.
10:24, the nation views 'x' as a mid-major, because they are a mid-major and will ALWAYS be...
Bill, thanks for getting the moderation turned off. It is much more fun to have constant interaction than waiting for the moderator to approve comments!
10:56 & 10:24,
Any school that doesn't have a football program is a mid-major, in my opinion. "Mid-major" might not be the best word.
Maybe "half-ath"(letic) would be better.
10:50, there are alot of alleged adults out there, those over 30, who definately exhibit a lack of self confidence. Not mention ethics and character.
why would X fans read this blog? dont they have their own blog? guess we all know the answer to that one!
Bill - your blog is fine the way it is.
Just keep the info coming - ignore the keyboard critics.
good job
Bill,
Your underlying hatred for UC aside, the real issue isn't whether UC deserves to be in the top 25. The issue is whether they deserve votes. The answer is YES. How do you not get a few votes when you beat two top 20 teams in a week?? That deserves a little credit. They DIDN'T get voted in and they don't deserve to at this point. But they DO deserve a few votes for playing so well.
I agree w/ 10:42 about the teams MC wasn't naming. I don't think Dayton would be among them since they beat Louisville and Pitt.
Even if duke was 9-9 thru the first 1/3 of season, they should not receive any top 25 votes.
By the end of the season, if UC continues to improve they will receive the votes they deserve. They can prove everyone wrong and win the BE tourney to make the NCAA too.
They control their own destiny to earn whatever they deserve. They have 2/3 of a season remaining to do it.
Amen, the people behind the screen have left !
11:11 - Like your humor.
However if school w/o football is considered "Half-Ath(letic)" that cover 6 or 7 teams in BE otherwise known as LE(Little East) this year.
Anon 3:11 aka "little 'x' troll" If that's the case, then the Big East has eight football teams, which is eight more that the little A-10 has at ZERO, which is what they will ALWAYS have...LOL
Go back to your room and have a nice little cry!
That's Anon 3:21 aka "little 'x' troll"
Oh well - a troll is a troll anytime of day or night!
Is UC going to end up in the top quarter of the BE? No. But on the other hand, if X and Dayton were in the BE they would not finish in the top quarter either. They would be fighting for their lives to get into the dance and probably have to settle for the NIT. That is why, unless their is an upset in the A10 tourney, only one A10 team will go dancing. Sure, UC can beat any team on a given night and so can X and UD. However, to do it every night at the level of talent the BE has is overwhelming. Look at the teams in the A10 and tell me where the challenge comes from. Oh, but X and UD will lose a few there too.
4:06 - Wanna bet?
A10 definitely gets 2 in tourney, and probably 3.
