UC football at PBS

As you UC ponders what to do about building a new basketball arena and expanding and renovating Nippert Stadium, I heard this idea the other day from a UC fan. His idea was to forget about renovating Nippert. Instead, he would tear down Nippert and focus all of the fundraising efforts on building a new basketball arena on that site, leaving Fifth Third Arena as a possible venue for an indoor practice facility. That would mean moving all of UC's football games to Paul Brown Stadium.

Is this a good idea? I remember when UC tried to make Riverfront Stadium its home field for football years ago. It didn't work. The crowds were small and the atmosphere was terrible. The question is, now that UC is in the Big East and experiencing some success, has the program progressed far enough that it could regularly attract 40,000 to 50,000 fans to PBS? If it could, would it still make sense to play all of UC's games there or would something be lost by not playing on campus?

Both Pitt and South Florida play their home games in NFL stadiums, so it certainly wouldn't be an unusual development in the Big East.

Could it work here?

Nippert is a cool place to watch a game with a great atmosphere. It needs about 10,000 more seats, widened concourses, and several new concession booths/restroooms. I don't know if that is possible with the amount of room they have tucked in between Tangeman and the Lindner center. I'd much rather see it renovated than watch UC games at PBS.

But there is the issue of space and money to overcome...

NOOOO. PBS has nowhere near the atmosphere of Nippert. If you watch Pitt or USF play games, it just doesn't seem like a good college atmosphere.

Also, the students are starting to get engaged by the football program. It's convenient to walk across the street and be at the stadium. It would be a huge hassle for everyone to drive downtown (not to mention possible DUI's).

nippert is a very unique place in college football. i'm ok if they keep it just as it is.

Football needs to be on campus. The people who keep pushing Paul Brown Stadium will be the first to complain about the cost, the concessions, that it is half empty, etc, etc.

A horrific idea. Nippert has a great setting in the middle of campus and has the potential to have an atmosphere much more festive and college-like than anything PBS can offer. Maybe that's just me remembering the dark days of Riverfront but there's absolutely no substitute for on-campus football.

U do not tear down the 5th oldest athletics stadium in the nation... U people are dumb for even mentioning this... I would like to know if its considered a historic landmark...

keep Nippert, solve the parking problem then enlarge Nippert

One of the worst ideas possible - would kill the attendance, remove all student participation...the only Cincinnatians who have any spark and zeal at the games!

very bad idea. I would keep the games at nippert. This is only the first year the team has had success. Maybe after next year if every game sells out, you can talk about moving some choice games to PBS. Nippert is a special place to play football. Add some seats to Nippert, 45k total would be ideal.

Awful, AWFUL idea! Nippert is historic and is an awesome place to watch a football game. Plus it's smack dab in the middle of campus. No one has mentioned this yet, but who wants to put UC in a stadium that's ultimately controlled by Mike frickin' Brown? (Not that this should matter, but idiot Brown happens to be a big OSU fan.)

Bad idea. Good to see most everyone can see that. If they have sustained success, they should consider expanding Nippert somewhat. Still, I'd rather see tickets to Bearcat football games be the hottest in town than empty seats again.

Nippert needs to stay. I can remember great games there. Plus the area HS needs it. I know a lot of kids go to UC because of The Showdown and they see the campus then go to school there. If they move to PBS, those games at Nippert will probably go to Miami. This would be bad for UC.

IF UC plays a big game like Oklahoma or OSU then move the game to PBS, otherwise Nippert is where they need to be.

Tear down the Press box and have the second deck go all the way around then put the press box on top of them.

Terrible idea. Nippert is the greatest. They will fix it up
so that they can get up to 50k
in there. The entire Clifton
area will be hopping Friday and
Saturday nights of home games.
The stadium can be used by high
school games and playoffs.

College football should be played
on campus. Pitt and USF should
be the ones looking to get
on-campus facilities.

Why even report stupidity like this? It's a nonstarter.

A big game at PBS is fine (i.e., Ohio State, Oklahoma, etc.)

Football at PBS should be the exception, rather than the rule. Sort of the way it currently operates for the Bengals.

Bill, "you heard from a UC fan that" blah blah. Playing at PBS is stupid as stupid gets. Nippert is awesome and the atmosphere is top shelf. UC does not have the money to tear down Nippert and build a BBall arena. You will hear from many more UC fans that this idea is idiotic so why post a blog thread "I heard from a UC fan who thought tearing down Shoemaker Center for an indoor practice facility for football, and moving BBall down to US Bank Arena is a good idea"

"U" may only be a teenager for all I know, but "U" are the stupid one for 1) using "U" in place of "you" and 2) for chiding (look it up) people for expressing their opinion.

Having said that, UC needs to give the students a reason to come and stay on campus. It's a large commuter-driven school. Expand the Nip, sell it out consistently, which still hasn't been done, and turn it into an intimidating place to visit for opposing teams.

For those teams who bring an exceptionally large fan base to Cincinnati, THEN you consider moving those rare games to PBS.

USF is building a stadium...

Let BK decide.
If he can fill 60k PBS and wants to play there over 35k at Nippert, then UC FB should play at PBS.

The answer is up to BK.

I went to UC from fall of 76 through spring of 81. I regularly went to the football games in Nippert. It was great. During those years, I only went to one Bengals game. Also, there were some basketball games in Riverfront Coliseum. I went to several, but not as many as I would have attended if they were on campus. The basketball team was exciting - beating national champion Louisville, but the games were not well attended. I think we would have the same problem if the football games were in PBS. Note: I traveled from Texas to UC to see UC-Louisville. Soldout was nice, but Nipper must have more / better bathrooms!!!

I talked to Jim Kelly, Jr. out at Montgomery Inn before the BK Show, after the San Diego trip.

Paraphrasing one of UC's finest, "No team deserves to play in that environment."

They called it 25k for the Bearcats' win, but it was probably closer to half that number. San Diego State was trying to build an on-campus field.
