More on Mauk

The NCAA denied Mauk's application for an extension of eligibility based on NCAA Bylaw 30.6.1.2 that states that a redshirt year is considered within the control of the institution and/or student-athlete and does not constitute a missed participation opportunity.

Mauk was redshirted as a freshman at Wake Forest in 2003. He was injured in 2006 while playing quarterback at Wake in the season opener vs. Syracuse and missed the rest of the season due to his injury. The NCAA accepted 2006 as a lost opportunity for participation, but not the 2003 season.

Mauk set a school record with 31 passing touchdowns last season, leading UC to a 10-3 recdord and a No. 17 ranking in the final AP poll. He completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 3,121 yards.

Too bad. I can't say I'm surprised, but I am a bit disappointed. UC should still be in decent shape at QB though with Grutza returning and ND transfer Demetrius Jones competing for the spot. Should make for an entertaining offseason. Good luck with your future endeavors Ben!

I would love to see what Ben could have done if he was healthy. He may have made the largest impact for a player with one year of elligibility in the history of UC. I hope for the best for him. And I'm looking forward to seeing how far Grutza has progressed. I bet he surprises a lot of people.

That doesn't make any sense- Why would the year he was redshirted become a factor- thats the whole concept behind it is that that year doesn't affect your 4 years of eligibility. That's terrible.

I wish ben was back but I hope UC does not waste focus and time by appealing a lost cause. Good Luck Ben!

It's unfortunate for everyone involved, Ben, the team, and the fans. However, Ben is already attending UC as a grad student. Let's take advantage of his leadership and bring him on as a grad assistant!

GO CATS!

Any chance he gets an undrafted shot at some NFL team? He has the intangibles, or will his height and past injury scare people away. I think he is better than most people think. Thoughts?

Not surprising at all but the interesting part of the language is "a redshirt year is considered within the control of the institution and/or student-athlete."

If you took a survey of athletes who were redshirted to see what percentage really had a choice in the matter the answer would likely be ZERO.

At least we got it over with early and this won't drag into spring practice. The Bearcats can now start determining who the qb will be in 2008.

Sorry to see Mauk go.
Now back to UC FB.
Who will QB in 2008?

at 12:16 PM Blogger RickNMd said...

Bill, now that this is over, would you mind updating us on the depth chart of UC quarterbacks going into spring practice?

For one, when is Jones eligible, and do any of the youngsters have a shot at beating out Grutza as the future of the program might be better off in the hands of a QB who will be starter for a few years instead of one.

Nothing against Grutza, but I don't think UC is a top 20 team if he's the starter last year.

based on this ruling, mike williams should be in good shape for an extra year given he didn't red shirt? ha! watch the rule and explantion change next time.

12:26, couldn't agree more. Someone on another thread thinks it's nonsense that we believe the NCAA is anti-UC. No, they aren't anti-UC, they simply rule against UC EVERY time! There is much nonsense and it's spelled N-C-A-A.

at 12:51 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is not surprising. Once you get to school, you have a five year clock and are allowed to compete four seasons in that five year span. If you haven't used all of your eligibility when that clock expires, you're out of luck. The NCAA doesn't bend this rule often. If they do, it is usually because two seasons were lost due to injury. Mauk missed one by injury and one by choice. That's the risk of a redshirt. You're burning your injury time early.

I believe the NCAA made the right call here. If you want to argue an anti-UC bias, you may be able to make an argument with other cases, but this isn't a strong case for it.

12:26 - I would be afraid that this will be an insight as to why Williams probably wont get a 6th year. Red-shirting as well as the desire to transfer and sit out a year are each in the player's or institutions control. Cuz he sat out a year by his own decision to transfer, I would think he will also not get a 6th season. And as to whether Ben wanted to redshirt his 1st year, I think he did simply cuz he was not yet good enough to get on the field. so the option was there to redshirt instead of wasting a year.

Too bad for Ben!!! My heart goes out to the kid, for many reasons.

UC would have been better with him in '08...but we will move on and get over it...But for Ben, his football career in over.

Dear Ben...thanks for giving us your effort, your talent and your leadership for the one year it was possible...I hope it makes you a Bearcat forever! Best of luck...wherever life takes you!

This is more NCAA crap! They knew that with Mauk, UC was a legitimate BCS team in 2008. Well, the joke will be on them, because if they think for a second that BK is going to allow the QB position to hold the team back, they have another thing coming. BK will do whatever it takes to ensure that the attacking, UC spread offense runs over and through defenses this season. Grutza IS capable of leading this team.

Thanks for your outstanding contributions Ben, you are truly a gentleman and a tremendous athlete to boot.

As for the NCAA, I can't help but feel they forced a cut and dry decision on a case that was not. For one, his injury affected more than one year of eligibility - see the lost time this year, the playing with pain, and the follow-up surgery. Two, his freshman redshirt was absolutely not his decision in any way.

at 2:11 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

1:21, Grutza is just one of the possibilities with talent at the QB slot. One of the things about BK is he'll allow competition to drive all positions, which will push all the real players, including the QB. Go Cats and all the best to Ben!

Apparently, Jesus doesn't want Ben to play another year. Can't argue with the Big Man...

I see jones fitting in better in kelly's offense than grutza. Jones can scramble and get out of situations just like Mauk did last year, but probably better and his arm is definetly stronger. The big question that needs to be answered is can he make good decisions like Mauk. If he can't then I think Grutza may be the starter so jones can have another year of learning.

There's an old saying that "the answer is 'No" if you don't ask."

All you can do is ask and the NCAA takes the individual case into consideration. Who knows, they might say yes.

But if you're sitting around thinking the NCAA is out to get UC for every case ruling, let me ask:

WHY?

What axe does the NCAA have to burn with UC? Oh, let's keep Cincinnati down because the success of their program hurts Kentucky and Ohio State. Oooo, let's screw Cincinnati any way we can?

UC keeps asking for exemptions to these dicey eligibility cases and surely some NCAA enforcement official in the athletic department has already told the coaches and AD the rules and the chances. But hey, "the answer is no unless you ask."

I can see it now--UC files a case and some screening committee member says, "Hey Charlie, look . . . here's another appeal from the University of Cincinnati."

"Oh gee Fred, f*** them. Just rubberstamp it DECLINED!"

Yeah, that makes all the sense in the world.

My 2 cents, but I wouldn't say the NCAA is anti-UC, but they are more bend the rules for certain programs
(Duke and UK come to mind).

Who burns axes? I think you're supposed to grind them.

It's hard to catch anybody cheating anymore, you know that? These slimy suckers are slippery -- and they're bold, too. Ohio State's Jim Tressel blatantly skated up to the edge of ethical badness last week, acting with such audacity that even the newspaper that broke the news had no idea it was breaking anything at all. And still won't unless it reads this here story.

So here you go, Cincinnati Enquirer. I'll give it to you in three easy steps:

1. On signing day, the story at the bottom right of the sports front page noted that OSU football coach Jim Tressel had signed the best receiver out of Cincinnati, DeVier Posey of La Salle High School.

2. On the same day, at the bottom left of that same page, a story noted that La Salle High was offering a school fund-raiser called "An Evening with Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel" on March 5. Tickets range from $60 for drinks and dinner to $175, which includes a photo op with Tressel as well as a football signed by the OSU coach.

3. Connect those dots. Tressel had never signed a player from La Salle until he got Posey. Likewise, Tressel has never donated an evening of his time to help raise money for La Salle until this year. And the "Evening with Jim Tressel" wasn't announced in the local newspaper until the day after Posey signed. Why? This is just a guess, but it's a good guess: If Posey had backed out of his commitment to Ohio State, Tressel wasn't going to have an evening with La Salle.

The NCAA won't bother to look into the Tressel-Posey thing, I promise you, because the NCAA can't prove intent. And as any OSU fan would tell you, Tressel's intent was merely to help a high school 100 miles away, and that DeVier Posey's deliverance to Ohio State was a coincidence.

at 10:46 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Posey committed about a year ago and was never going to waver. Jim Tressel was asked by a friend (Coach Grippa) to come down and speak because there is obviously a demand. The date decided was so that he could openly speak about Devier at the dinner.

Greg Doyle is a complete idiot and not someone that people should be listening to. His connect the dots report was laughable and really makes no sense. He's just another hater from Cincinnati and he always uses his articles to try and start crap. He's embarrassing to Cincinnati.

Jealousy sucks.

10:46....hey chief...I realize you think Jim Tressel is squeeky clean...you might want to do some digging into Tressel's days at Youngstown State...things got conveniently swept under the carpet...imagine that????

Looks like the UC Pussycats will be lucky to make the Papajohns.com Bowl again next season!

Meanwhile, the rest of Ohio will be cheering for the Buckeyes!
