Selling disrespect
Mick Cronin doesn't think his team is getting enough credit nationally for what it's done in the Big East. Or maybe he likes the fact that he keeps hearing about what a bad loss it was for Louisville to lose to UC or that West Virginia had a bad shooting night, with no credit being given to UC's defense. As long as that kind of talk continues, he has something to sell to his players.
"I sell it to them all the time" Cronin said today. "The fact is that we've been playing as well as anybody in our league ouside of Georgetown since Jan. 1. Look at the teams we've beaten in the Big East and look at the quality wins we have. Find me another Big East team that’s beaten the quality of teams that we have. I tell our players that all the time. We’ve earned what we've gotten so far. Nothing's been handed to us from the day we all got here. But you hear a lot of announcers out there and a lot of things written the places we go about Cincinnati in a not so positive light, even when we have success."

Sadly, it seems that not only is UC disrespected, but it seems like we're also disliked. There's a perception that many people outside of Cincinnati has and it is promoted to some extent by the media. Speaking of which, I hope that Brian Kelly won't be experiencing the disrespect that occured last Big East media day by all Cincy media.
My guess is that the enquirer won't overlook this next one.
In my opinion, Mick selling the 'underdog' aspect to his team is the only way they can keep winning.
Sure, they've got talent. Yes, they can defend the damn ball. But the moment they stop acting like they've got something to prove is the moment they're most vulnerable.
So for now, I'll take it (and the W's that go along with it). Everyone else can keep thinking we suck if it means that we come to their house and blow them out.
There are 2 parts to a season, the out of conference and the conference. UC's OOC record was really bad and if that record was better then UC would not only have a winning record but maybe some top 25 votes (for what they have done in conference). UC does not have a winning record and it is Feb. UC could lose all of the remaining games ot they could win them all. The only respect UC needs is from the NIT or NCAA selection committee and the former as opposed to the latter is more likely.
I have not seen the media or others outside Cincy showing dislike to UC, maybe apathy? UC is treated fairly.
In a perfect world UC goes on big winning streak, secures a NCAA invite as the 12 seed and sends the #5 seeded Xavier team home. Xavier wants no part of UC right now.
10 WINS 11 LOSES! Should be in the top 15 by now. The Rodney Dangerfield of college basketball.
Cronin has a point but he also doesn't have an argument when UC stumbles over itself against lesser teams St. John's, Seton Hall and Bowling Green.
Hey Red, the word is "losses" you genius you.
Student, I guess that's when we'll find out a little more about Mick's coaching and his ability to keep his kids focused.
Huggins' teams often couldn't handle a high ranking. They'd get cocky, the effort would lack, and they would take a bad loss or two because of it.
It's human nature to believe your press, but I also have hope that Mick has their ears to such a degree that he can stop them from going down that road.
IMO, Anon 5:01 is on the right track. The out-of-conference record does not matter much. The in-conference record will determine the Cats' seed in the Big East Tourney at MSG. Finishing fourth in the conference will give them a bye in the first round, which is a big advantage. Some more quality wins in the Big East Tourney may get them to NCAA Tourney even if the Cats don't beat Georgetown.
Personally, I think the Cats may beat GT on the road or beat them at MSG, but I am a dreamer.
I'd like to see them do great the rest of the year, but I think we need to be realistic also. This team seems both capable of beating anyone in the conference or losing to anyone. Let's hope they do alot more winning than losing the rest of the season, starting again tomorrow!
The players need to realistic and keep working, but why do the fans need to realistic?
So our high hopes don't collapse!
Okay, let's take care of business and beat Marquette.
Check out the "Path to the NCAA Tournament" thread at Bearnews.com, but don't get drawn into the reality distortion field.
when uc's home base is not completly sold on this team, why are u surprised the out of towners don't have respect for UC?
8:50, not just the current BB team. This has been ongoing in both BB and FB for quite a while.
Red Foley,
Can you be a little clearer about your comments? There seems to be some sarcasm there, but can you explain yourself a little more directly?
Personally, I hope Mick keeps this kind of "disrespect" talk in the locker room. If it can motivate the team, wonderful. But I do not want us to borrow a Xavier tactic of always being the underdog and always being treated unfairly by others. To me, the Bearcats have always been tough and don't really care what others say or think. I think all the XU talk along these lines over the years has been embarrassing to their program and counterproductive. After all, who would want to go to a program (XU) or play in a league (A-10) that never gets respect?
Personally, I don't care if we are liked. I don't care if we are respected. I want us to be feared.
Bearcats hurt themselves badly with OCC losses. Conservatively they'll end the regular season wtih 13 losses, and only way they'll make NCAA tourney would be to win BE tourney. Could happen, but wouldn't bet on it.
Bearcatton - X is rated 15th nationally so don't think they're disrespected. Who would want to go to X and A10? Apparently a lot of top players as Muskies have recruited players away from BCS teams like OSU, Maryland and even UC.
Certainly X never fears playing the Bearcats just look at the record over last 10 yrs.
The pathetic BareCats don't deserve any respect. They might make the NIT next year, but don't hold me to it.
