Vaughn's 'off' night

Deonta Vaughn said he wasn't frustrated Saturday night when he was unable to score. As he sat on the bench for long stretches at a time, he said he was content to cheer on his teammates, who were doing fine without him.

That sounds nice, but it's hard to swallow. First of all, his teammates, with the exception of John Williamson, weren't doing so well without him. Second, Mick Cronin said he could tell Vaughn was getting down on himself, feeling that he was letting his teammates down.

“Sometimes he puts too much pressure on himself,” Cronin said, “and you can understand why when you look at the configuration of how much he’s had to score for us. It’s a lot of pressure on him night in and night out to produce for us. It’s a lot to ask of a guy to never have an off night. But you saw the real Deonta Vaughn in overtime. That’s the guy that’s really got us to the position that we’re in.”

With his 20.4-point average, Vaughn accounts for roughly one-third of UC's scoring average in Big East play. That's quite a burden to put on one player, which is why Cronin was so happy to see Williamson put up 22 points against Rutgers.

It's a tribute to Vaughn's mental toughness that, despite the struggles he endured during regulation, he bounced back to score 13 points in overtime. Not many players could hang in there the way he did.

Finally a post that is not all fluff & stuff. Vaughn is a top notch player and has improved dramatically over last season. The rest of this team is no better than they were last year and the 15th best recruiting class in the nation has been a big disappointment. Don't know if the talent was over-rated or if the coach is not getting the players developed or both. If not for Vaughn this team would be almost as bad as it was last season.

Watch what you say, buddy. The Sippin Mick worshipers will be here any time now. They can smell it when someone says something that is not really complimentary about their hero.
PS: Where did the Sippin Mick stuff come from? Last year he was Munchkin Mick.

Next year he'll be All Excuses Mick.

No, sadly, the Sippin Mick crap was around last year, too. The mouth breathing retards who came up with it are too slow witted to come up with anything new.

I agree with 3:53. He should win the Excuses of the Year Award.

Ah, the Xavier fan IQ displayed again. I suppose that you guys wouldn't be wasting your time on the UC blog if your boys hadn't squeaked past St. Joe's at home today, it is definitely a war day in and day out in that conference, LMAO.

The rest of this team is no better than they were last year and the 15th best recruiting class in the nation has been a big disappointment.

The team's RPI is up over 100 points from this time last year. They've already tripled their number of conference wins, and they've defeated two ranked teams.

Either you're too ignorant to understand that those little details constitute improvement, or you're in denial because it interferes with your agenda of being a whining troll.

Which is it? Just plain ignorant, or whining troll?

Hey genius, Vaughn is averaging all of 3 more points per game than last year.

The TEAM'S RPI is up over 100 points, the TEAM won 3x more conference games, the TEAM defeated 2 ranked opponents.

But thanks for answering the question: ignorant it is.

at 5:05 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bottom line to all you SOS and RPI idiots. 11 wins 12 loses. NOT ACCEPTABLE. Better than last year. SO WHAT?

at 5:12 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

What X fans? These are UC fans that are disgusted with the state of UC Basketball. One other thing, the UC basketball program should not be a training ground for under qualified coaches. A top notch coach would have the Bearcats contending for a Big East championship and in the NCAA tourney by next season and that is not happening here. I don't wanna hear anything about the NIT. Who cares who the 65th best team is?

at 5:28 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Red, that would be the 66th best team. There are now 65 teams who will be dancing. But none of them will be UC, not this year or next. Trust me. And I am and have been a Bearcat fan for decades. A realistic one.

at 5:29 PM Blogger Unknown said...

Sorry Red Foley but you are wrong. This isnt just any other year where Huggins bearcats ran over lesser talent in a lesser conference. (Not bashing huggins, he did an awesome job, but lets be honest he doesnt get all those 25 consecutive win seasons playing in this big east.) This is year two in a major rebuilding process. Since when do we expect freshmen to just be awesome right out of the gate? Of course there are some exceptions to the rule like Mayo, Beasley, Love ect. But most freshmen struggle and develop. Martin Hicks Logan and on down the line surely weren't dominating as freshmen. If you told me after watching that team last year that this year we would triple our conference wins, beat the likes of Syracuse, Pitt, Louisville, WV, Nova in doing it, and have more road wins in conference than any other team in the big east besides GW, I would have told you to check yourself into a mental institution. In year two of one of the biggest rebuilding jobs known to man all you look for is improvement. A sense that the program is headed back to where we all remember it and want it to be. In that regard I could not be more satisfied with the job being done by UC and its coaching staff and its players.

at 9:15 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

As someone who has been a longtime UC fan, I will admit that I am not completely sold on Cronin. However, I also believe in giving credit where due and he has accomplished a significant amount having only one true Big East caliber player in Vaughn and, at times, a second one when he comes to play - Williamson. Considering that, he's done fairly well with the team this year.

at 9:57 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Like all of the BE coaches who did not have their program are contending for the BE title and the NCAA championship. Get real people. UC basketball was killed and to expect any coach to come in and contend in a year or two is just idiotic. Bring Coach K in last year and he would be in the same boat. But I guess that he is not a real coach either.

This team is better and getting better. It will be better next year with some top kids coming in.

Am I happy where UC is right now? NO. But you can not blame MC or the players for that. Support the players and the program or we will never get top recruits.

Kids do not want to come here and play in front of a bunch of dumb Arsses. Oh, I forgot, you really are from X and are just trying to stir the pot.

Good post 11:12

Speaking of Huggins, anybody watch the West Virgina choke job against Pitt on SaturdaY?

Seemed just like old times..... Huggins scapegoating and chewing out certain players until they're wrapped up in knots, said players then can't hit free throws, followed by horrible defense at the end of the game, leaving as usual a three point shooter open to hit the winner at the buzzer. Oh and then afterwards Huggins blaming the players, saying he heard these guys were supposed to be good shooters. Talk about your Dega Vu's and passing the buck.

Hey HBP BOB, they were good shooters once,,,,,until you got there and started in on them and destroyed their confidence. Just like the tournament, choking once again in the big game.

HBP by the way stands for High Blood Pressure. His face is always beet red and unhealthy looking any more. The guy is a coronary waiting to happen.

at 11:46 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah I saw the game.

I thought West Virginia played hard, but they neve seemed in sync the whole game. I though Huggins had his team playing uptight.

Come to think of it, I remember a lot of times UC came out tight or not ready in big games when he was here. They seemed more afraid to make a mistake and get screamed at than to just play loose and free. Maybe that's why his teams got upset so often in the NCAAs.

Coaching by intimidation always caught up to him in the big games. And then he ran into the one person he couldn't intimidate-The Z Lady-and that was it. He was gone. He lost that one too.

Who do you think will get more votes for coach of the year in the Big East?

Huggins....or Cronin???

Mick Cronin, the 2007-2008 Big East Coach of the Year.

You heard it here first.

You know what is hilarious is we had our worst team in 20 years last year and beat X and Huggins. This year X has their best team in 20 years and almost loses to us at home and we kick Huggins' ass at WVU. Just keep some perspective trolls...

Lock all of the doors! We need to turn off Mick's cell phone, email and all communication right away! The word is out that UC has the greatest BB coach on the face of the earth and all of the best pro and college teams are going to try to steal him from us. Even the Euro teams that want and need Adam H. so bad are interested. I know that he's the greatest. Just read this blog! Psst, you listening, LSU?

There's not one damn thing that Bob Huggins and Andy Kennedy, or their teams, does that I give a flying frog about.

This is sad. I'm assuming this is mostly grown men on here, but they are acting like five year olds. And not just the people knocking UC, it is most of the people. Reading these posts makes me embarrased to be a fan of UC. And I can just hear all you clever people out there saying, "You should be embarrased of that team." How about giving Mick some time before we start with the kindergarten nicknames like Munckin Mick. It takes time. Dizzylo, I'm sure your first couple days at Taco Bell weren't easy. But look at you now, they trust you with the sour cream gun. See, it isn't hard to take cheap shots. It would be refreshing to see some actual discussion about UC basketball instead of the same stuff everytime.

Dave in Omaha, what's an attention whore? Are you one? You sure have all the answers. Maybe Sippin' could eve add you as a coach. We'd be undefeated then! Wow!

rickmd,
I'm convinced that almost all UC fans still care about how both Huggins' and Kennedys' teams are doing, and wish them well. As well they should. After all, they are a part of the history of UC basketball.

But they have moved on. I'm sure that neither of them are spending time thinking about UC's program or its fans. They are focused, as they should be, on running their own programs.

UC fans have also moved on as well.

There are some who post here who offer nothing constructive but only cheer for the program's failure. They are few in number and getting fewer. In fact, most of them are made by very few people (obvious by their postings).

They don't need to be engaged in discussion, because they offer nothing. They don't matter anymore.

They have simply become irrelevant.

at 8:31 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's practically impossible for Cronin to live up to the accomplishments of the greatest coach in the history of the NCAA - you know, the one that never won an NCAA title, consistently had teams lose in the second round, had his program placed on probation, had several players and recruits with police records or other trouble with the law, and the grand finale - the DUI video.

Cronin has a lot of work to do to hit all of those marks.

I am going out of my way to make the most stupid posts that I can, just so I can attempt to match the useless posts from those that hate or improperly judge Mick Cronin.

It is pointless now to try and have a normal conversation about UC basketball on this blog, so instead of arguing or ignoring, I just add to the stupidity. It's more fun this way!

at 9:43 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

We can have constructive discussions on this blog - as long as we don't mention any of Mick's shortcomings...oops!

at 9:58 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

What has led some (probably few) to believe that you can't judge or criticise Mick Cronin?

Judging is one thing, making a blanket statement that "he can't coach" or stupid comments about his height are another.

For one thing - he has more than proven that he can indeed coach, and coach very well. Is he perfect? Obviously not. He has made mistakes and will continue to make them. But some refuse to allow him any slack whatsoever - thinking UC should be contending for a Big East title in just his second season at UC(something Huggins is not doing, either) and earning a high seed in the NCAA (WVU may not even make the tourney).

If the few that continue to make useless posts on here would try being reasonable once in awhile, then perhaps there could be normal conversation.

Until that happens though,

Quote from Huggins after vote:

"I can't help it if my guys don't do what they're supposed to do. I tell em day in and day out and they just don't listen. Hey, Mick, can I get a seat at your clinic this year? How'd you get your guys to kick our behinds so bad this year?"

Well put. Bob always did like to scapegoat certain guys, bully tthem around.

Of course that's what he did with the administration at UC, tried to bully them. He forced their hand, thinking he was above it all. BYE BYE Bob. Then he carpet bagged K State after a year. Now he's at West Virgina blaming his players when he loses.

What a great guy. Same ol Bob.

Mick on the other hand is puttin up some big W's with far less talent than ol Bob. I think he has to be a shoo-in for coach of the year.

I hope the Huggins worshipers are happy now.

They have turned many UC fans that used to respect Huggins into Huggins haters.

The longer they continue, the worse it will get. Next year, when UC makes the NCAA tournament, many will be saying "Bob who?".

at 11:08 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was watching the Pitt-West Virginia game too and when they called time out, I turned to my wife and said, "watch this, they'll leave a three point guy unguarded."

Lo and behold.....how many times did he do that at UC? Jeezal Pete!

Remebering how he used get all red faced and jerk guys out of the game if they made some little mistake....it was embarassing. To the player, the fans and the school. BObby Knight is a much greater coach than Huggins ever will be and he got his behind fired for the same kind of behavior.

I think Huggins attracted thug level players because he's a thug level coach. No wonder some of the guys around here who worship him behave the way they do. They learned it from Bob.

Such a role model. Especially the part about driving drunk and being a hopeless alcoholic. He embarassed the school too many times, in the end he wore out his welcome.

Actually 11 wins and 12 losses is more embarrassing.

Embarrassing to whom? How?

Does it make you ashamed to wear a UC shirt or cap in public?

Does it make you rip off that bumper sticker from your car?

Does it make you watch "America's Most Wanted" instead of the games?

Tell us, please, how a school's sports record at around .500 embarrasses you?

Who's really paying attention except our own fans? Does Marquette care? Does Georgetown care? Does Louisville or Pitt or West Virginia care?

When you open the door to leave for work, is there a band of opponents' fans there to needle you?

Is your life so empty that an 11-12 record has you on the edge of a building top?

Are you incapable of sports enjoyment unless your team is a "winner"--every game, every year, 100 percent, f-ing-A, bubba?

Please, inform us, how are you embarrassed by 11-12 because for me, embarrassing is winning 25 games a year in a piss ant conference, getting high seeds and choking like hangmen in the first and second round of the tournament every year.

Embarrassing to me is being unprepared, outplayed, outcoached and sent home year after year by lesser teams in talent.

Embarrassing to me is wearing a UC cap or t-shirt around the D.C. suburbs and having people come up and ask if I'm from Cincinnati, and then wonder how I can possibly wear that stuff when the sports pages report another thug player in trouble with the law, another coach arrested, another hyperventilating outburst by the head coach caught on ESPN.

Dude, that's embarrassing.

Not 11-12.

"rickNmd, at 11-12 you are satisfied?? No wonder you are such a fan of Mick!"

No, rickNmd didn't say he was satisfied with the record. He said he was satisfied that we unloaded an abusive lush for a new one who's endured 2 hard non-recruiting years' worth of players, and is managing to pull out a better team than anyone could have imagined. The team won some impressive games.

He's also satisfied that like me he can walk in a non-Cincinnati state/town and not endure abuse because of the shenanigans of the coach and/or team members.

It ain't easy bein' Red & Black when some of the behaviour made it look more like the "Black & Blew".

Be happy UC is building on better ground, despite how it came about. As said by most on this board: MOVE ON!

The puking-drunk episode was bad but consider the alternative ... he could have:
1) made a career out of baiting referees and/or his own players.
2) resurrected his career at a new school and then stuck it to them & his players a year later for a better deal.
3) worn a Clown suit to play a former team, get trounced & then talk about how his players can't friggin' shoot the ball like he heard they could.

Personal favorite = Clown suit.
