Byrd drug charge

If you haven't seen it on our web site, there's a story by news reporter Kimball Perry about Terrill Byrd, UC's second-team All-American defensive tackle, and his former Colerain High School teammate, Mister Simpson, both of whom have had warrants issued for their arrest after they didn't show up today for a court appearance. Both were facing a drug abuse charge after they were arrested on March 5 for allegedly smoking marijuana. I'm trying to reach Brian Kelly now.

Oh No! If Zimpher hears about this the football program will need to be dismantled and Coach Kelly sent packing.

Smoking marijuana in his own residence? Charged for just that? You gotta be kidding me. What the hell is really going on?

Brian Kelly will come down on these players like a ton of bricks. He knows that if this gets swept under the rug, the old "UC is UNLV-East" accusation will be heard across the USA. What is it with these kids from Colerain, anyway? Is it something in the water up there?

FYI, these guys are in college. Plenty of kids do this in college and it is unfair to hold them to a higher standard. That does not make it right, and yes it was a poor decision , but they are kids in college who made a bad decision. I can't speak for everyone, but I made a few poor choices in college and I would imagine most people did. Unfortunately for them when they make a mistake it becomes news.

Marijuana is a minor offense if you're just smoking. Missing the court appearance means warrants will be issued and that's not good.

"Last time I checked marijuana was still ILLEGAL!!!"

So is jaywalking and parking on the grass. Possession of 100 grams or less is a minor misdeneanor with a fine of $100.

If I were Byrd and Simpson I'd be more worried about Kelly than the law. They should have went to court and paid their "traffic ticket equivalent." Even with a warrant, they can turn themselves in, make bail and pay the fine at the next court appearance. Kelly might kick them off the team and then they lose their scholarships.

2:17, Byrd is not being held to a higher standard. Smoking mary j is illegal whether your a regular kid or an athlete.

Byrd made a mistake and he will have to answer for that mistake. You are right everyone does make mistakes. The goal in life is to minimize those mistakes and NOT GET ARRESTED. Now with that said, if he is truly apologetic, learns from this, and rehabilitates himself, he will be fine.
By the way I am only referring to Byrd, since Simpson has not been nor will be a UC football player. I do not think he is even registered as a student anymore. He is irrelevant and a non-issue.

One response is that college kids do this, and they have since the 60's. Another response is that it's illegal, and they should do the time if they done the crime.

Understanding or Legalities; mercy or justice. Which is worse for a team or better for a team? We're talking about a team and not about a church. At the same time, it's good to have some of that timeless wisdom rub off on what we do.

If you tilt in the direction of mercy, then the accusation will be that you're turning a blind eye because of favoritism or single-minded ambition.

If you tilt in the direction of justice, then the accusation will be that you're legalistic, harsh, and heartless.

It is merciful to be hard on someone so they don't destroy their own dream. It is just to provide a repayment plan, so that offenders can try to fix what they've broken.

People on here that are acting like this is nothing are ridiculous. There is no doubt they are not UC alumni - educated, smart people realize possession or smoking marijuana is WRONG!

What's your inference? UC people are too educated to smoke pot? A UC student was smoking pot; don't you expect him to graduate and become an alum?
It's not right and it is illegal, but kids from virtually every college commit offenses. Underage drinking is more prevalent than drug usage, and it's illegal.

These kids are not being held to any higher standard than anyone else. While you can debate until the death about whether or not marijuana should be legal or illegal, the point is it is still illegal, and if you get caught you will get some sort of punishment. I'm a college student, I know for a fact that a lot of people do it, but that doesn't make it any less illegal. Everyone makes bad decisions, but these players should realize that they are football players for a major collegiate program and they are under the spotlight a lot more, so if they get caught a lot more people will notice and people will talk. That's not holding them to a higher standard, that's a fact of life. I hope Brian Kelly does come down hard on them to set an example for the other players, and to possibly prevent these kinds of things from happening again.
