It's over

Surely no one wanted to see the season end with six straight losses, but it was clear down the stretch that this team, extremely limited to start with, simply ran out of gas. Give them credit for fighting to the end agaisnt Pitt after absorbing that 45-point loss to UConn.

“We fought hard to get to the Big East tournament,” Mick Cronin said. “That’s all we were focused on. So now that we’re here we wanted to make sure that we showed what Cincinnati basketball was all about – fight hard, compete, never give up. Anybody that was in the arena tonight saw that.”

Of course, fighting hard is not the goal here. Winning is. The Bearcats surpassed what they were able to do last year, but now they have to take up another few notches next year to keep this thing on course. Whether they'll be able to do that remains to be seen, but the fact that Rashad Bishop was more assertive tonight, scoring 11 points with five rebounds, was a good sign.

I talked briefly with Mike Williams after the game and he's champing at the bit to get to next season. He should make a big difference. He needs to. So does Yancy Gates and Cashmere Wright.

This years team had some great wins in mid season. But the last month has been ugly. If they do not win early and often next year, the few fans that are left at 5/3 may never come back.

How many days until spring scrimmage?

What a difference 3 years makes. Where were the screens, ball movement etc? That's a coaching issue and is very troubling.

Way to go, Deonta. Glad you have two more years to go. Equally glad some others do not. Let’s just hope you get some help!

All they were focused on was the Big East Tourney?

Then why did Mick start the NCAA bubble talk??

The program has SO far to go to get to where it wants.

Meanwhile Huggins plays on. If UC's defense could have played with the effort WVU's did today, they could have won the game, but Mick doesn't seem to have the knowledge of defense that Huggins does.

And we know he's light years behind Kennedy offensively.

He needs to get better and fast.

Congrats to Mick & the team for a successful season.

It's now time for Mick's seniors AKA the "Saviors" to take their place in Bearcat history.

I have to say--I'm very happy with the team this season--well-behaved nice kids who are good students. What more could we have asked for?

Keep those kids on the straight & narrow Mick--the heck with the winning %--it's the grad % that matters.

Kudos

I enjoyed this season. Don't get me wrong, it was frustrating and downright annoying at times, but there's nothing more rewarding than seeing a team rebuild itself. This season was a step-up from last season and I expect a bigger step next year - everyone does. I will make our future national championships that much more sweeter.

As a UC grad and fan, I want them to do well. This year was frustrating for a couple of reasons.

First, this team improved from its early season disaster only to return to that form for a 5 game stretch. That falls on the coach and players alike.

Second, the much heralded freshmen class didn't get close to the hype that appeared when they were recruited. Except for one, they were a bust. Advice for Mick & the Compliant Media: don't build them up so much, and then you won't have so far to fall.

Here's hoping for both the basketball and football teams.

Bill,

I don't understand what you mean by they "ran out of gas"???

Surely they were limited by talent, but is something wrong with there conditioning?

It appears you mean mentally ran out of gas?

This seems to mean that not only was this team limited talent wise, but they also lacked the mental toughness it takes to compete at a Mid to low level Big East team.

Right, Nancy. I'll go you one better. Why don't we simply completely trash BB (it's almost there anyway) and just play intramurals. Then we could scrimmage the other intramural teams and maybe avoid embarrassing the University with any more 30-0 runs. And, of course, our BB players would never have any off-court issues because we wouldn't have any BB players.

Is it any wonder that this area supports the infamously mediocre twosome, the Bengals and Reds? But Anon 11:30 AKA Nancy Z is oh, so happy with BB at UC. An osu grad? Wait a minute, that's right, the university president is an osu grad. I think it's becoming clearer now. Clear as mud. Or is that dirt?

We are at least one coach and one university president away from having the type of basketball at UC that we've become accustomed to and that the majority of us fans want!

The Saviors packed it in a long time ago, they had spring break plans for Panama City. Mick will regret not playing the Freshmen more this year as next year will be another failure.

Yyet another stupid post. Sorry for being so blunt, but this is the kind of nonsense that makes this blog almost unreadable anymore.

Mick has plenty of knowledge of defense. What Mick did not have were the same level of players that Huggins has.

UC gave great effort last night and against a much better team than WVU played.

And I don't give a rat's patotootie what Huggins team is doing.

"Light years" behind Kennedy offensively? Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

You just continue to amaze me.

And finally, 3 years of comparison to Huggins and 2 for Kennedy is enough. Get over it already.

The future looks bright for UC basketball starting next season.

The offensive was pretty ineffective yesterday. It sort of seemed like the plan was to get the ball to Vaughn and let him chuck up shots. Sort of a live and die with Vaughn, which when he only shoot 32% will often mean dieing. If Vaughn had shot closer to 40%, UC would have won, so I suppose it wasn't that bad of a strategy.

The worst part of this season was when Mick started politicing for his NCAA chances. I agreed with him at the time, that they did have a chance, but I disagree with taking that public. And obviously the worst part about it all is that they proceeded to loss the remaining six games.

This team will definately be better next year. The only senior leaving that was worth anything is Williamson, the others simply filled space. Vaughn, Williams, Gates and Bishop should all be solid and maybe one of the other freshman could come along. If Biggie works really really hard this summer he could be a huge surprise.

Anon 11:30 PM,

Are your favorite things badminton and butterfly catching? How about simply reminiscing or a serious game of checkers?

Honestly, for you to be very happy with the BB situation, you could not be any type of athlete or even a serious fan of UC BB.

For those of us who appreciate that good football AND good basketball enhances the collegiate atmosphere, we are anything but pleased with where our BB program currently is.

I am also happy not to read about off court issues. However, it's not much of a stretch to think that there was probably one early in the season.

There is no school that fields a real BB team that doesn't have some off court issues occasionally, even the "hallowed" Duke University.

In a perfect world, there would be no issues of any type. In the meantime, I'll be content with a real team and be a real fan.

a classic paragraph from the "SippinMick" guy (and btw, i think it's funny that he thinks he's clever for making up such an unfunny, and un-catchy nick-name). but, let's get back on point...

the last phrase of his paragraph, "Mick doesn't seem to have the knowledge of defense that Huggins does."

is he referring to the lack of knowledge that held Huggins to 39 points in Morgantown???? this is the beautiful flaw in the "Huggins Loyalists / Mick Bashers" argument. There's really no counter-point: 62-39. 62-39, with a team comprised of 2 to 3 players that are Big East caliber.

spin all you want, and keep hating-on Mick with your lack of wit & knowledge.

SMMM -

If you actually watched the game, UC's defense was great - Chuck and Dan both pointed out how UC's first shot defense was excellent and that the guys were stopping penetration all night. UC's issue came on the defensive rebounding facet of the game. Think about it...Pitt had so many second chance shots and points (especially early on in the 2nd half). I hate the fact that they lost, but I am excited about the future. For those of you that are still bitter and are living in the past, being optimistic is fun...you should try it.

I was glad they at least rebounded effort wise from the disaster against UConn.
It showed me something (good) about the coaching staff.

at 8:47 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow! So negative toward Cronin. Have you seen the talent level of his team. A coach can only do so much...and when you're outmanned every game in your conference you're bound to lose a lot. Patients is a virtue. Allow him to get some top players in here and then you can make your final judgement. The problem with blogs is that the bloggers are typically negative (Just like talk radio).

ITS OVER! VAUGHN AGAINST THE WORLD! THE WORLD WON.
Well we only lost 18 games this year compared to 19 last season. We won 8 conference games and finished in 10th place. We accomplished all of this by playing 5 seniors and one soph for the vast majority of the minutes. Yet we had the 15th best recruiting class in the nation.

Seems to me that a little preparation for next season would have been the way to go since nobody expected anything from this team anyway. Right.

Coach Cronin played the guys who gave him the best chance to win now. That is reasonable, except what is the difference if you win 8 or 9 games or if you win 13? None in my humble opinion. I want to know why none of these much heralded recruits got significant playing time (exception Bishop). It has to be for one of two possible reasons. Either they were not the players they were thought to be or they just did not respond to the program. In either scenario it comes down to the coach.

What can we expect for next season? Last year's recruits appear to be a bunch of role players at best. So next season we will be relying on Deonta Vaughn, another unproven freshmen class and a guy who has already played 2 seasons of major college basketball and accomplished very little (perhaps sitting out for 2 years will help him, huh), or maybe being 4 years older than most of the opposition will help. I know his injury was Mick's number one excuse this season. Of course last season it was the absence of the H-bomb.

I said it at the end of last season and I have say it again now. I see no reason to be optimistic about next season. Still another year of pathetic basketball on the near horizon.

Apathy looms near and then the BB program can be put to rest for good. Thanks Nancy.

at 9:35 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Their strength of schedule is 10th in the nation. They lost Mike Williams before the season started, McClain's foot problem limited his minutes, Gentry's foot injury the last few games left him unavailable and Jamual Warren wasn't healthy until Xavier. If they had a bit more luck with injuries maybe they finish at or above .500. The inuries plus the suspension of Mitchell limited their depth causing them to get tired toward the end of the season.

We found out that with a limited roster Mick can field a competitive team in the Big East and should be an encouraging sign for next year.

simply amazing how many people feel 2 years of sub-0.500 results from mick is outstanding!

can't these posters see what quality of basketball is being displayed? they hang out the 8 conference wins like that indicates how great they did. injuries were a factor in some of those wins.

An rpi of 112 or so indicates where the team stands. with 5 seniors and a top 20 recruiting class. 13 - 18.

imagine what will they say if uc gets to 0.500. woohoo!

micks 2 year UC record: 24 - 37. uc used to get 24 wins in one season. 10 - 24 in conference games.

2 years completed, and still questions on coaching, defense and offense. where is the progress?

I was pleased overall with this season and will always support the team. Mick knows he has work to do. The one thing I hate about Cincinnati is all the fair weather fans. Just because your team isn't winning all the time doesn't mean you can't enjoy watching them and take pride in them. Have a dose of reality and then post please. The team is getting better and things are looking bright for the future.

Go Bearcats!

If anyone has lived in a house while it's being remodeled, they would understand how it feels to pay for tickets and ucat fees over the last two years. All you can do is hope that when the "remodel" is finished it was worth the time, hassle, annoyance and inconvenience. I gave away half my home game tickets this year and last because i couldn't stand the dust. looks like next year they install the cabinets.

Re: 10:26 Meanwhile Huggins plays on

I didn't realize that Huggins still had eligibility left. I don't think he's doing much of the playing. Also, to the comment about "where are the screens, etc"....were you really watching the offense during Huggins' time here? The players were always standing around on offense.
To compare Huggins' situation to that of UC (which Huggins' is primarily responsible for anyway) is ridiculous. Cronin is doing a remarkable job under very difficult circumstances.

This blog will be so much better when all of you haters aren't here in a year or two. Not many people on here have the foresight to recognize that nobody can build a dominant basketball team from scratch in two years. I understand many of you are used to cheering for a dominant teams but cheering for UC takes a little more backbone these days, and the people who come on here with their clever expressions that only they can understand obviously don't have one.

I'd advise the REAL fans to stick with it. Success will be much more rewarding because we will have been supportive all along.

I guess that I just will never understand how losing 18 games including the last 6 in a row. One by a league record 45 points, allowing a 30-0 run, losing games to DePaul and Providence at home, not to mention the early season losses in the 'gimme' games constitutes doing a "remarkable job".

I am so tired of the endless excuses: Mike Williams got hurt, the schedule was too tough, the officials cheated, Vaughn was tired, the guys don't listen, the crowds aren't big enough, Biggie has a sore foot, Warren hurt his hand (while out breaking the law), never ever any blame for Crash Cronin.

Looks to me like most of the Bearcat faithful have now at least have come to grips with the reality that this program is going nowhere real fast. The more people that realize this, then the sooner we can actually fix the problem.

Thanks Nancy for another season of wonderful UC basketball and nothing to look forward to in the future (except for your leaving).

So CSA are you a Huggins Homer? Are you one of those guys that would rather everything stay the same than to see change? No one said that with 3rd rate JUCO players, a diamond in the rough, and one recruiting class was going to change the face of the team. It might take a couple years still. But let Mick get his guys and we'll see what he can do. When Matta left Xavier you probably thought that the program was doomed and that was it, but now Sean Miller has them in the top 10-15. Don't be afraid of change. Huggins was a lost cause (he and his players were the doing the same things that you don't give a free pass to Warren for doing - breaking the law). The guy was done here. It was time to move on. What happened to the Bearcats was like taking a part of car and throwing away some of the parts and trying to put it back together with parts that don't even fit, or are all rusted and inefficient. Get the right parts back in place and the car is back to running smoothly. Give Mick a break. Now if it's two years from now and they still aren't even competing for a tourney bid (18-20 wins) then we've got a problem.

CSA -

Please tell me how YOU or anyone else would take a team that has:

1 scholarship player

0 recruits in the fold (because HUGGS stopped recruiting in his last two seasons)

AND

has just been ripped to shreds by its administration, to dominance in two years.

For the four trillionth time, MICK INHERITED A MESS! He brought in the scraps of what was left after all 312 division 1 college teams filled their rosters and turned them into a middle of the road Big East team. This year's freshmen were ranked high by people who NEVER SEE THEM PLAY - if you pay attention to college and HS sports, determining a 5 or 3 star recruit is impossible. Look at guys like Steve Logan and Kenyon Martin - they were projects. Lo was fat and slow and Martin was very RAW - these two turned out to be studs. Huggs talked about Rod Flowers like he was the best thing since sliced bread - he was not good (I guess you could say Huggs wasn't a good coach). My point is, Mick will develop players and when he starts reaping the benefits of his work, I can say I never waivered and supported MY ALMA MATER - because I understood the situation.

If you scroll above, the individual who described the rebuilding process as similar to remodeling a house, is DEAD ON CORRECT!

You can be a real fan or be a front runner - it's your choice.

You are natural born complainers as
far as I can tell. What is the point except to entice people to talk to you (which apparently happens infrequently in your real life)?

Let's go on the record here. I predict that the Bearcats will make the NCAA or NIT tourney within the next 2 years.

I ask the complainers to go on the record and state that UC will never make the tourney. Put your money where your mouth is or stop complaining.

Well, Cheviot Sports Authority, at least we know you're not apathetic.

Just pathetic.

What did you expect this year? What coach that we could have gotten would have done better? I'm as upset as anyone about the fall of UC's BB team, but you seem to lay most of the blame at Cronin's feet. He stepped into the mess, he didn't create it.

You don't think wins at U of L, at WVU, vs. Nova, Pitt, and Syracuse were impressive? They had their share of disappointments, but, again, what did you expect?

Hey CSA

How can you even consider yourself part of the "Bearcat Faithful"? All you do is gripe and complain. Give me one suggestion as to how you would fix the team. (except for firing Nancy Z)

From what I saw, the freshmen got a good lesson on playing in the Big East. Much more difficult than they could ever imagine. They also know where they need to improve this summer. Lets see if they do it. I for one hope that Biggie gets on a schedule in the weight room and has someone to teach him low post footwork.

Those are some of my suggestions. Anybody else want to chime in and make suggestions as to what next years players need to do to improve?

Bill, Please follow up on Biggie's foot injury. Is it going to heal? Does he need surgery or is it a career long physical limitation?

at 3:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

This team did not have enough offensive options. Next year, having Williams, Gates, and Aldridge to provide some post offense out of the 4 and 5 spots will really help. Belton and McClain will probably be better also. If Wright really can make the deep 3's then we will have a point guard that can stretch the 'D' and Deonta won't have to take so many shots. We may have a problem guarding tall guards though as those guys are both about 6'0''.

Did Wilks ever leave the bench - did he redshirt?

Anon 1:57,

What a great prediction! By Sippin's fourth year, you believe that UC will be in either the NCAA OR NIT. In other words, you're giving Super Coach four years and allowing for him to make the Loser's Tournament. Maybe you are the one who needs to come out of mommy's basement occasionally. Then you would have seen that even this group of D-1 wannabes QUIT on Mick. And, of course, you'll disappear two years down the road if UC still smells like the open sewer known as the Mill Creek.

Btw where are all those Ak's backer's that swore he was better than sliced bread. Guess that non conference schedule fooled everyone sorta like our schedule under Huggins entering the tourney. Advancing past the opening weekend 2times in the past 14 years with UC and 1 time the past 9. Oh yea can't forget the being eliminated by every single higher seed we ever faced and losing 10 times to lower seeded teams. Guess Huggins just couldn't get the job done when it mattered huh.. - your buddie

CSA can spout all the details of the UConn loss but "doesn't give a damn" about UC-WV embarrassment.

Don't take the all-negative posters seriously, folks.

I think that the team needs an injection of shooting skills. The offense seemed very limited at times, and then it turned into the Vaughn show out of necessity. With a few more shooters, Vaughn's magic would be much more effective.

I think next year will be a step up...maybe not to NCAA tourney quality but maybe to NIT quality.
