Dion Dixon commits
Chicago guard Dion Dixon, who was at the game today, just announced that he has committed to UC. Dixon is a 6-3 guard from Crane High School. He averages 25 points per game and plays point guard in high school, although he says he can also play the two.
"I just fell in love with the coaching staff," Dixon said. "And when I watched the game, I love the way they play. It fits my style. Coach lets you play."
Dixon said he was also recruited by Baylor and Ohio State, although UC is the only school he has visited.

At least we have received one bit of positive UC news today. But, I find it at least a little bit disconcerning that he liked the way the Bearcats played today, which was for the most part uninspired.
"Coach lets you play." I guess so, they play poorly when they listen to Sippin' and almost as badly when they do not.
rated a 3 star guard for 2008 class
We've been here for too long:
"It is what it is"
That takes some of the sting out of a disappointing loss. Way to go Mick!
Great news.
Bill,
Can you tell us about Dixon's game? What can we expect from him and how will he contribute.
Thanks.
This guy is a player. Tall PG who has a very good stroke. He is also very athletic. Underrated coming out of Chicago (this is common since there are so many good players in the Chicago region. Lots of players go unnoticed.)
Solid pickup.
I love everything I have read about this kid. He is a tough kid, best point guard in Chicago.
Comparisons to Dwayne Wade.http://www.midstatehoops.com/articles/2007/dixon.html
From what I've seen and read about "Double D" he looks to be a real steal; mostly due to being relatively unknown outside of the Chicago hoops scene.
The best part about Dixon is not his long range accuracy, or his ability to raise up, which are both impressive, but more so because his head looks to be screwed on straight.
The problem, but a good one to have, is where does Mick fit him in with Deonta and Larry Davis?
If this kid decides to stick around he looks to have loads of potential that could blossom under Vaughn's wing the next two seasons at the collegiate level.
Can he coach? Sounds like he can do everything else.
Wow, another weak coaching job and then another weak pick-up by Sippin' Mick.
This latest pick-up scores fewer PPG than Alvin Mitchell and we know how poor Alvin has looked offensively.
I guess he will fit in with a team that appears headed to tons of 50 and 60 point offensive games again next year.
Sippin' Mick Moniker Maker
Good player but wasn't offered by any of those schools listed above. His best offer was Baylor.
Doesn't mean everything, just saying.
He is being compared to Dwayne Wade, you heard of him.
I am just saying.
In Dwayne Wade's freshman year, Conference USA tournament at US Bank Area. Jason Maxiel gave him a still forearm and D-Wade went to the floor.
Just saying.
Does this mean Mitchell is not returning?
Dixon's commitment has nothing to do with Mitchell... next year's team needed another PG.
Wright
Dixon
Vaughn
Davis
Mitchell
Bishop
Wilks
Aldrige
Williams
Gates
Belton
McClain
This leaves two scholarships open if Aldridge becomes a walk-on, which was mentioned if Mick found enough players for the '08 class.
Varez Ward is still an option, and UC is definitely after Scotty Hopson. There are also a couple bigs that have been mentioned.
this guy is apparently decent but cronin needs to start recruiting better. look at the recruiting for the other teams in the Big East. There are five Big East schools ranked in the top 25 and UC isn't one of them...
Anon 5:34,
This is a travesty! How can it possibly be? So many have said what a great recruiter Mick is and we have seen how great this year's crop of freshman have been after almost a whole season. Really tearing it up on the court, aren't they? There must be some kind of mistake though. Isn't this class at least rated in the top 25? Possibly, Mick's not only an average coach, but also an average recruiter when he's recruiting kids to play for Mick instead of Huggins or Pitino.
The class was rated 15th, that was with Jason Henry and Mick Williams taken into consideration.
BTW Dwayne Wade did not play his freshman year, he was a prop 48.
Average recruiter? He recruited the Sat/Dermarr class at UC, the Francisco Garcia class at UL.
I guess Yancy gates is average. Dion Dixon has already jumped 10 spots in ONE month in the ratings for players in Illinois.
Recruiting better?? Average?
I guess Yancy Gates is average. I guess Cash Wright is alright. I guess Dion Dixon who has been tearing up the CPL, Chicago Public League for you rookies. He is on the cusp of getting Scotty Hopson and he is average?
He got Sat/DJohnson/F.Garcia to UC and UL respectively.
That seems far from average, dont ya think
Suckin' Sean Miller Lite
Scotty Hopson will NEVER play for Sippin' Mick. On the cusp of committment, eh jt? It will simply not happen. What's jt stand for anyway? Just talk?
Anon 9:32
Never say never, there are strong rumors that Hopson is down to Tenn. and UC. Hopson's mom supposedly likes UC but Tenn. is still perceived as the leader.
**
As far as Dixon goes, everyone in Illinois and Chicago is talking about this kid. I'd rather take someone who is still rising than a 4 or 5 star kid who has leveled off.
JT,
Mike Williams was NOT part of the top-15 ranking. They mentioned his name in their (rivals') ranking, but he was not part of the class rank. The freshman were. And Wilks replaced Henry so the number should have been about the same... top-15. It's been poor, whether you want to admit it or not.
And where are you getting this Scotty Hopson information from? I haven't heard anything like that so far. I last heard he was close to signing with Tennessee/Pearl and his up-tempo, high-powered offensive team.
I say we have a one in five shot since we are in his last 5.
http://rivalshoops.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=50129
Hopson led the way with 25 points including 15 in the fourth quarter. 'We talk about it in class and in school when we have time. We know we’re the big three and we know we have to step up as seniors and lead our team,' said Hopson, who was being watched Friday night by Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin
Word is he may have decided to take a visit to UC after his game on Friday when Mick saw him.
Post: #28RE: we have our combo guard
I found this on the Illini Scout site:
http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?S=169&F=261...&t=2129849
"My thoughts exactly...of all the guards I've watched in the states of Indiana and Illinois the past two years, the only one that I thought was better than Dion was Derrick Rose. He has a fine balance of all the right tools at this point...he is big, strong, quick, athletic, handles and passes the ball very well, and is a good shooter who is an even better scorer. I wish we would have been able to get him for '08.
Dion is a great guard...hopefully his character is as good as his basketball skills."
These are guys that watch these players year in and year out.
I guess Derrick Rose is average.
So JT,
Hopson's "on the cusp" of signing with UC because he "may" take a visit and UC was one of the teams mentioned going after him?
Talk about stretching the current facts.
Why wold he choose UC and its stall-ball offense when he could pick Tennessee's high-powered offense under the incredibly talented Pearl?
And Dixon right now is a three-star recruit. Lower in rivals' rankings than Alvin Mitchell. Plus Alvin averaged more points per game and only averaged 3 PPG this year. SO what, Dixon might average 2 PPG?? What an addition that would be!!
Sippin' Mick Moniker Maker
Everyone sure seems to call Dixon a great "scorer" for someone who has averaged 25 PPG in high school. Alvin averaged 33 PPG in high school and now scores 3 PPG in the Big East.
I wonder what those analysts thought of Alvin's shooting if they think Dixon's that good?? Obviously not the brightest bulbs around.

Mike Williams has something to do wtih the ranking being so high. He was a McDAA 5* recruit. He weighed in on the recruiting class.
Why Wilks the same as Henry? He is a full year behind him. Henry was considered a direct impact player where Wilks is considered a elite raw athlete project. So should have is not the same. Lost two players of this recruiting class, one to injury one to academics and still won how many BEast games?
If you want to describe a POOR class, how about #6 ranked Ohio State. They had the #1 class two years ago, #6 last year and they don't make the tourney???? a TAD disappointing?? Now that is poor. I would say UC's class has been average considering the majority of the players are considered 4 year players and not immediate impact players.
Hopsons mom loves UC and the coaching staff.
Scout ranks Dixon as the No. 40 shooting guard in the 2008 class. Rivals doesn't even have them on their top-150 recruits at this point.
To put that into perspective, players such as Bishop, etc. were ranked in the top-150 as part of the "quality" top-15 recruiting class.
Although I have to see him myself to make final judgments, nothing about Dixon makes him seem any better or even as good as Mick's so far very, very unimpressive 2007recruiting class.
Sippin' Mick Moniker Maker
WHo would you have chosen to be uc's head coach after huggins was gone???? Anon 12:49 -your buddy, Guzzlin Bob
He plays in the CPL and he opted not to play in this summer's AAU circuit.
Larry Davis did the same thing last year because he was hurt and he would have been a 4* recruit. He turned out pretty good.
I guarantee Dixon will move up and who really pays attention to ratings. He is said by many to be THE BEST GUARD in ILLINOIS.
Everyone scores a lot in High School. Jamaul Warren averaged 28 points per in HS. You are so ignorant and your points are so weak and lame, just like your life va jay jay.

For someone who posts and awful lot and is very critical of Mick, you would figure to be more informed than what you have shown to be so far. Rankings are only a guide and one person's (or service's) opinion. I would venture to say the rankings you refer to have not been updated in a while. As JT pointed out in a previous post, people who have seen Dixon play are raving about him. One such article stated only Derrick Rose was better in Indiana and Illinois over the last 2 years. Those states were/are home to both Eric Gordon and Inman Shumpert.

Mick is stock piling talent on the wings, his style is up and down, run and gun. In order to implement that style, you first have to have the personnel capable of doing that. He is beginning to collect those pieces (Davis, Wright, Dixon, Wilks, Bishop, Gates, McClain). As far as your comparison between Mitchell and Dixon, anyone who averages 25 a game in the Chicago Public League is fine in my book. That league is one of the toughest in the country and is on par with New York. Mitchell came from the less talented basketball state of Florida. Also, just because Mitchell hasn't played well this year, doesn't mean (if he comes back) that he can't make a huge jump in production next year.
Only the uniformed rely solely on how many stars a player has next to his name. The best indicator is which other programs are recruiting the player as well. I just picked a few other major programs, Zona has been recruiting a couple of two star players, UConn is recruiting a two star and one star, and Kansas is recruiting a two star player. I trust the judgement of the college coaches over some of the hacks from the recruitng sites.
"Judge a Man by his Actions no by the words and not "EXPERT OPINIONS" of people who claim to know what they are talking about. Dixon has flown under the radar for sometime now in the shadows of Sherron Collins(Kansas)and Brandon Mcgee(Indiana). Some of you guyz seem to be so stuck on rankings what was D Wade #, how about D.Williams of the Jazz.
In two years time you wont remeber whose rank at what number in highshool all you care about is what they are doing now. So I will be interested to see what you have to say in two years when DION DIXON IS TEARING UP THE BIG EAST. I wonder what his ranking will be then.
CUZO........
JT,
Since you are making personal attacks against my intelligence, perhaps you'd like to compare Stanford-Binet IQ scores?
Anyway, I still see no reason to be excited by this player.
Mick's "top-15" recruiting class has been a complete disaster. I'm sure this guy isn't any better than the McClain/Davis/Mitchell type of players, and all three of them have been average to below average at best with no signs of improvement as the year's progressed.
7:01 -
Mick SAYS his style is run-and-gun, but I see no evidence he can build that type of team.
Coaches like Bruce Pearl build that style in REALITY, not in delusion-land.
And the superior Andy Kennedy built that style in just one year (look at points per game for their team compared to in the past). I have pointed out that accurate statistic many times.
Citing Wilks, Davis and McClain as examples don't help your case at all. Davis hasn't shown he can play an ounce of defense, McClain has been very poor and Wilks has not even played to speak of. Of course he's another "great" FOUR star recruit.
Real coaches like Billy Gillispie come in and recruit INSTANT impact players like Patrick Patterson right away. Kennedy does as well.
Then you have the Sippin' Mick's of the world.
Sippin' Mick Moniker Maker
SMMM 1:54 -
I am pretty sure Vaughn is an instant impact player - not to mention Gates for next year and Williams. Also, to mention AK's group from '05-06 as if that was his team is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I was a big AK fan, but that whole team was recruited by Bob Huggins. Kennedy had a team that was suited to the up and down style that Huggins' teams were known for in his 16 years at UC. In fact, a lot of interim coaches would have loved to have had that team! I guarantee if Mick would have inherited the talent that Huggs and AK have, he would have won instantly as well - remember he came here with 2 scholarship players on the roster - McGowan and Allen - pretty sure Huggs and AK inherited full teams at OLE Miss and K St. (and WV).
I feel if you dont know Dion and havent seen him play then you shouldnt have any opinions! I know the kid and have seen him play. This kid is very talented and very personable. Dion is exactly what Cincy needs as a player! He can stick the 3 play all guard positions hard nosed D and very athletic. Most of you bloggers havent even played college basketball to make such statements on what someone can do. Stick to being fans and let the real basketball players play.
SMMM, Anon 7:01 here.
Mick does not yet have the personnel in place yet to implement his style to it's full potential. If Mick had a choice and a chance out of the outgoing seniors, maybe John Williamson would have been on this team. As it was, given what he was left with and the amount of time he had to recruit, he could only do so much. Next year, we will get a better idea of the type of future teams Mick will put out on the court.
As far as Gillespie and Patterson, Gillespie had the Kentucky name going for him and did not have to try to recruit after a major upheavel/scandal/showdown like UC had to go through. AK has brought no big name talent to Ole Miss yet and he inherited much more to start with than what Mick did. I'd be willing to bet you that Mick will win a Big East championship (regular season or conference tourney) or a NCAA championship before AK does.
Danny -
I was referring to the Ole Miss team that scores tons of points after not doing so in the past. Kennedy turned around their offense so fast.
Damien -
Many said Alvin could shoot and was so skilled. Yet he struggled to make plenty of wide open 3-pointers before his untimely exit.
And 6:18 -
The point is Kennedy's improved their offense very much, very fast.
Sippin' Mick Moniker Maker
I don't think Ak's teams would be scoring in the Big East like they do in the SEC. Face it, it's a different style of play between conferences. SEC teams don't play defense as well as Big East schools and some Big East schools don't score as well as SEC schools. What matters is winning the game. You could score 90 a game and give up 95 per game, your not going to have a good record. You could score 60 a game and give up 55 a game and have a great record. Everyone likes the teams that score, I'll admit to that, their more fun to watch but ultimately a win is a win no matter how yo go about achieving the win.
Anon 7:01 and 6:18
P.S. There are rumors starting to float out there that Hopson is now leaning towards UC and may have even given Mick a soft verbal. Consensus is that he will announce after the season, possibly at the MCDAA game.
Well, I agree the SEC may have more "scoring teams" overall, but I think you are overstating the point. I think Kennedy has simply done a great job of building an offense quickly.
Plus, a few Big East teams do score a lot of points, so it can be done. But that comes back to my point, which is Kennedy has quickly built a great offense, while Mick hasn't.
Of course if Mick had truly built a great defense by this point I wouldn't be AS frustrated, but he hasn't. In the majority of UC's games, they've given up an average of 75 points or so. Need to get the "majority" quite a bit below that level to be a truly good defensive team.
I think the SEC style portends to more overall success, too. Look at Florida over the last couple years.
The SEC as a conference (in football and basketball) does everything the right way.
