Vaughn first-team all-Big East

Sophomore guard Deonta Vaughn today was one of 10 players named to the all-Big East first team. Vaughn is averaging 16.7 points per game, which ranks seventh in the league. He also ranks 11th in assists (4.07), seventh in free throw percentage (8.5) and third in 3-point field goal percentage (39.3).

"He's been a godsend for us," Mick Cronin said. "When I got the job, things could have been a lot worse. Fortunately we were able to find a diamond in the rough like Deonta Vaughn and outsmart all the guys who didn’t sign him. It's helped accelerate the rebuilding process here."

OMG it could be worst ?

Too bad Mick couldn't outsmart anybody on the court for past five games and counting.

Who did he outsmart with the freshmen he brought in this season? I think he did manage to outsmart a few fans who believe anything that the beat writers and Ken Broos of the area tell them.

At this point, I think the best thing for Mick to do is to keep his foot out of his mouth and hope that next years class is a whole helluva lot better than this one.

It seems a little rediculous that there are 11 players on the First Team All Big East. It's similar to each team being represented in the MLB All Star game. Just pick fifteen players, rank them according to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and have at it, like every other league.

Even so, congrats to Vaughn. He was the true brightspot on UC's team this season.

Question: How can there be 10 guys on the first team?

Wasn't it always the top 5 first team and the next 5 were the second team?

Congratulations to Deonta Vaughn. Thanks for persevering through two tough years. Hopefully the next two will be better.

CSA,

You were almost right on that foot in the mouth comment about Cronin. He should have his foot stuck far enough in his mouth that no one can understand anything he's saying. Then UC just might improve next season.

Your Buddy

Mr. Bill,
Please ask Cronin if Biggie will have foot surgery at the end of season. If no, what is Biggie's injury? Thanks.

Congrats to DV for this as a Soph! Would have loved to have him on a strong UC team where the opposition couldn't concentrate so much on him.

On the other hand, he could easily go down as the best player on the worst UC team in modern history with the UC COC* candidate.

I wonder how he feels right about now about coming to UC when he could have been at Indiana or another decent team. He'll likely not admit it, but he's probably kicking himself for his choice. Blame him if he is?

CSA,
Usually there are ten on the first team all-Big East. I count eleven this year. There must have been a tie. Don't you remember when Eric was picked? Funny that there were eleven that year also. Seems like a Sports Authority would know these things. ;)

Bill,

Did Vaughn get the points...500?

at 8:48 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

CSA Seems to me he outsmarted Pitino, Huggins, Dixon, & Boehiem earlier this year but I'm sure you think their excuses for losing are valid ones right?

at 9:52 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good job DV. Too bad that there were not any other Bearcats on the second team, honorable mention, or the freshman team. Does not look good for the future.

BTW, what is the BE tourney look like?

I dont think Deonta Vaughn was ever offered to play at Indian or possibly any other BCS conference school. So I dont think he thinks about playing at Indiana. He was available very late in the recruiting process and would have been nothing more than a fall back option for other schools. And while it may seem strange to you, maybe he wanted to be somewhere where he could play right away and wanted to be somewhere where he was wanted and not as fallback guy.

Besides he is only halfway through his career. Not like he is done. He is a sophmore who made first team all BE. While the team is struggling, im sure the atmosphere of the games and being on national tv is better than playing for say Ohio U or Western Kentucky.

yeah, he outsmarted em all the way to tenth place and an 18 loss season. Well done!

A 10 player first team? Hilarious...If that isn't a sign that the Big East is ridiculously too big than nothing is!

Vaughn was Indiana all-state player who attended Harmony prep due to grades. His 2005 Indianapolis Arlington team was one of last to beat Greg Oden/Mike Conley -led Lawrence North during regular season. He was as highly rated as Richmond native Dominic James (Marquette) and Terre Haute's Armon Bassett (Indiana)
Congrats on all Big -East, Deonta, a glimmer of light for the Bearcats .

The conference coaches choose the all-league teams, and are not allowed to vote for players on their team.

Is there anyone on this blog who is smarter then the other 15 coaches in the Big East and believes Vaugh is not deserving of first team Big East selection?

Please stop demonstrating your basketball ignorance and give credit where due.

Bill, thanks for the blog and for providing new news when it happens. I have in the past been a strong critic of the Enquirer and of your coverage of UC sports, especially football. I even dubbed you "Billy Boy-BK." Your commentary has been on target for the most part. I wish some of the bloggers would demonstrate a similar measure of balanced treatment.

Looking forward to an improved year next year. And congratulations to Vaughn.

To the above poster, Vaughn verbaled to Indiana and Mike Davis.
The reason there are 10 players on the first team is because the league is large with 16 teams.

A little groggy this morning when I woke up to my radio alarm set on WLW, but I thought I heard some report that included the words: "Oscar Robertson....Mick Cronin....and winning..."

Can anyone fill me in on that?

Sounded like a shot across Mick's bow, but I didn't really catch it all.

The Big O is no fan of losing Bearcat teams.

What concerns me the most about Cronin is that he has little to no influence over the basketball wannabes on the current team. They play about the most uninspired and unmotivated of any team I have ever seen.

How can anyone expect that real D-1 players will respect him and listen? And this is the guy that going to bring UC BB back to the top?

PLEASE tell me how!!

CSA -

You're are obviously a west-sider and the fact you have not been able to give Mick any credit - at all - this year makes it look like you are bitter towards the success he has had in his coaching career. I am glad that you have the hanger downers to rip him here, because I guarantee you would pee down your leg if he actually cared enough to approach you. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to see that there was a dramatic improvement over last years team. Yeah, the Cats have only won two more games than last year, but to go from 2 conference wins to 8 is an big improvement. The teams we beat and the coaches Mick outcoached speak for themselves. Is there reason to be upset? Yes. However, UC could have won by 50 points and some how Mick and the boys would have done something wrong.

11 players on the first team... so the Big East really has become a football league!

Good for Deonta, a real diamond in the rough.

And too all the people hating on Mick, give him another year. Losing is part of rebuilding and it is always tough for a storied program. Look how happy Minnesota fans are this year and they aren't going to the dance either.

I wonder if the dismal state of the BB program at UC is hurting the FB recruiting for BK. It helps to have strong programs in all sports and lots of enthusiasm. BK has to continue to do heavy lifting to raise the FB program and now he has the burden of the BB program's downfall on his back too.
Go Bearcats !

very good honor for Deonta and very deserving.

Have to really love to hear Cronin talk about outsmarting the other guys and getting Vaughn. Let's not forget he also "outsmarted" all the other guys and nabbed Adam H. also. What a find!

Must be a ton of stupid coaches out there for Mick to "outsmart" like his did with last year's dud 'Top 15' recruiting class.

The future sure looks "bright" with such as "smart" coach at the helm.

Oh, by the way, I wonder if the stupid coaches that he outsmarted during the season are thinking about losing to Cronin during the season? If so, it's because they're worried that the selection committee will view the loss to Cincinnati as a Bad Loss and it may affect their seeding. That something the "smart coach" doesn't need to worry about this year. And who knows how many more?

Mick really needs to keep his mouth shut and coach his team. His most notable gaffe was of course proclaiming this team an NCAA tournament team. I bet he'd like to have a chance to take that back. Now with his nonsense about outsmarting people he is looking not only petty but also ridiculous. A look at his other recruits is all you need to do to correctly label getting Vaughn a stroke of luck rather than genius. Mick would be much better off if he didn't comment to the media because he isn't very good at it.

Bill posts a positive thread on Deonta Vaughn being named first string all Big East. Of the 28 responses 6 praised DV for a good performance. The rest used the positive post to turn negative on Cronin, the Big East, the number of players on the BE all star team etc, etc. Calling Dr. Phil, calling Dr. Phil, save us from the terminally negative.

at 7:44 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anon 1:32,

Hardly terminally negative. But many of us are very unhappy and discontented with the current state of our beloved UC basketball team.

at 9:35 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

My question to the Mick haters is: what, exactly, do you suggest the Bearcats do? I've seen a lot of bashing and very few, check that, NO solutions. Give the man some time, he'll right the ship.

Congrats to Deonta (since the original post is about him, afterall).

This team just up and quit on Coach Cronin 5 games ago. Isn't anybody at the Enquirer asking WHY???

at 11:04 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

OK CSA, you are an expert >> so explain West Virginia!!!

at 9:32 AM Blogger Cheviot Sports Authority said...

What about West Virginia? I don't give a damn what West Virginia does. I don't give a damn what Bob Huggins does or Andy Kennedy or Kentucky or Xavier or OSU. What the hell does any of that have to do with the crappy play of this UC basketball team. I do know that UC is going to lose 18 games this season. One less than last year. What a great improvement.

Whoopee, they beat WV, good thing or they would have lost 19 games again. That is what I know about WV.

at 3:24 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I believe that proves my point.

Just glad the season is finally, mercifully...over.
