More on Mauk

Quarterback Ben Mauk said he was disappointed in the NCAA’s decision to deny him a sixth year of eligibility but remains optimistic that he will be running the UC offense next fall.

“I’m excited,” he said, “becaus now we start a new process and I actually get to talk to the NCAA instead of writing letters. I get to actually let them hear my voice and let them know who I am and why I deserve a sixth year. I think that will be a big help. Now I get to let them know every little detail. I think that will be a big help when you hear someone’s voice and actually hear the story come from them.”

Mauk, who was denied a sixth year because the NCAA said there wasn’t enough documentation of the injury that he says forced him to be pulled from competition during his redshirt freshman year at Wake Forest in 2003, is in the process of appealing that decision to a six-member Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee.

He will have 10 minutes to address the committee by phone. Four of those members will have to rule in his favor in order to get the decision overturned. No date has been set for that hearing.

Mauk arrived at Wake Forest shortly after having surgery to remove a screw in his toe. The screw had been placed there during surgery he underwent after breaking his leg during his freshman year in high school.

As a result of that surgery, he says, he was unable to play to his maximum ability at Wake and therefore should be granted another year.

But the documentation for any treatment he received for that injury at Wake or for any decisions that removed him from competition does not exist, according to UC compliance director Maggie McKinley.

“Wake didn’t have anything in their records about followup care for that foot,” McKinley said. “They didn’t have anything that said Ben couldn’t participate because of that foot.
“They said we have these notes but they weren’t anything like what we thought they would be. The documentation that supported it pretty much ended on June 12, which is when he reported for summer school.”

Mauk said today that he was on Wake’s traveling squad until about the midway point of his freshman year, but was removed before the trip to Florida State because of his injury.
But he said he doesn’t blame Wake Forest for not having the documentation.

“I don’t blame Wake Forest at all,” he said. “That’s one of the things that kind of gets you between a rock and a hard place. I’m not somebody that complains. I always try to bounce back as fast as I can from any blow that life deals me. Looking back, if I would have complained and been a crybaby this wouldn’t be such a problem. But because I was trying to be tough and tried to push through an injury and overcome it, I almost feel like I’m being penalized for that.”

First the Bowl in St. Pete is approved & a game vs. the SEC!!!!

"An important new wrinkle on the Big East side of this:
Starting in 2008, the Papajohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., which had a tie-in with Conference USA, will now feature a Southeastern Conference team against a Big East representative, a significant upgrade.
It also will move from a pre-Christmas slot to Dec. 29, a date that reflects the bowl's greater relevance."

Seems as though the comments are running more for Mauk to move on than to continue to bang his head against the NCAA wall.

As far as I know, and I have been a UC fan for many years, the NCAA has NEVER ruled in favor of an impact player at UC in either of the major sports. Sadly, I don't think this will have a positive outcome for UC.

Possibly the NCAA would grant an additional year for basketball and the Polish layup specialist, but for a difference maker like Mauk, it is truly doubtful.

Anyway, this will be another exciting year of UC football if one or more of the other QBs can rise to the occasion.

NCAA said they wanted documentation from 2003 season when Mauk showed up on campus. Wake has none.

NCAA will not accept "word of mouth" as evidence to avoid precedence. Case closed. 10 minute phone call will not help Ben.

Just another thought on Mauk. Yes, he may be climbing the HUGE anti-student-athlete NCAA mountain, but it is that same determination he has though that makes him t5he winner that he is. As a former football player I wonder - how many others would have packed it in after the serious injuries he has suffered?

You have to respect and admire his grit. I hope that he can pull this off!

I can't believe that the Big East has a new Bowl game in Florida and a matchup in a bowl vs. the SEC announced and nothing from the Enquire about it????
Not to mention the Texas Bowl getting canned by the league.

The Big East Conference announced today that the newly launched St. Petersburg Bowl will be part of the conference's bowl lineup beginning in 2008.

The game will be played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. and will pit the Big East's representative against an opponent from Conference USA.

The Big East also announced another change to the conference’s annual bowl arrangement.

The PapaJohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., which had featured a Big East school against a Conference USA opponent, will now match the Big East against an opponent from the Southeastern Conference.

The NCAA certified the St. Petersburg Bowl today.

The bowl was established by ESPN Regional Television and the game will air on ESPN in December.

“The St. Petersburg Bowl is another great bowl opportunity for the Big East,” league commissioner Michael Tranghese said. “The game is played in a Big East market and already has generated great interest in the local community. The partnership with ESPN will help the game grow quickly. Our coaches are always excited to play a postseason game in the state of Florida.”

Bill Koch,

I'm still not clear. After Mauck was cut from the traveling squad did he or did he not seek further medical care?

His statements that he does not blame Wake Forest and that he's not somebody that complains leads me to beieve that he did not. If that's the case, he is done as a UC football player. If not, he needs to produce the corresponding medical records.

It seems to me that it doesn't matter if Mauk had further treatment after he was removed from Wake Forest's travelling squad becuase if he did and they had documentation for it, they would have already produced it. I think Mauk is going to have a tough time getting the NCAA ruling overturned. I understand that he thinks he can sway the committee by telling his version of the story, but in my mind you either have the documentation or you don't. And he obviously doesn't at this point. We'll see.
