Darnell Wilks
If there has been one freshman who has been left out of the mix this season as the other five have all tested their skills it’s Darnell Wilks, who's probably the best pure athlete on the team.
“Darnell’s biggest transition is learning how to be a perimeter player,” said UC coach Mick Cronin. “He’s not strong enough right now to play on the interior in the Big East.
“He’s a guy that I wish I could give more playing time, but we’re playing more guys probably than anybody in the Big East right now so he’s kind of caught in a numbers crunch. But I haven’t changed my optimism about his potential.”
Wilks originally committed to UC as part of the 2008 class, so he would have been a freshman next year as part of the class that includes Yancy Gates and Cashmere Wright.
But when he completed the academic work that made him eligible this year, he and Cronin decided to let him take the spot that originally belonged to Jason Henry when Henry didn’t qualify academically.
Wilks understands that he could have been playing every game this season on the high school level instead of sitting on UC’s bench, but he believes he’s learning more about the game this way.
“The way I look at it, what else could I have learned from high school?” he said. “I’m all right with it. I just come out and try to do as well in practice as I can.”
Cronin said the UC coaching staff considered redshirting Wilks this season and there’s a chance they could decide to go that route next year, depending on how much he improves during the off-season.
“Darnell is a guy I always felt needed time to develop,” Cronin said. “He was a guy that had great athleticism but he was going to have to transition into a perimeter player. The key with him is to make sure he continues to work on his skill level.”

Knowing that I'll likely be bashed by the Mick Cronin defenders, I'll have to say that this is a BAD coaching decision. Early on, they knew or should have known that Darnell was not quite ready for prime time in the Big East. That said, the decision should not be if he should be redshirted or not for next year, but that he should have been redshirted THIS year. That way he could have developed both as a player and physically and possibly be available for next year. He's pretty much has not been available this year and if he is redshirted next year, he will have lost two seasons. Not very smart of Mick and the coaching staff, IMHO
How do you figure he loses 2 seasons if he is redshirted next year? If mic feels that he is not ready next year and redshirts him it would be the same as redshirting him this year, as he is not ready to play this year. Your still saving a year of eligibility to develop. If he was redshirted this year and was still not ready to compete next year, he would be forced into the same role as he is now. Would you consider that a lost season?

I agree. My first thoughts as well.
Absolutely brilliant recruiting.
4:30,
That may be the case, but by redshirting him this year, he would possibly be ready by midseason next year. That's one reason why it was not a real good move - 4:19
A redshirt would have been the best move, but Wilks being designated to a role player is not detrimental to the team. Mic recruits players to play for 4 years. Nobody can pass judgement on this kid his freshman year unless you can see into the future.
Can you Sports Authority?

at least i have turned your opinion from "BAD" to "not a very good move". I agree that a redshirt would have been the best move, but with Mic not knowing how this year's team would perform he probabaly thought that everyone would get purposeful minutes. 4:30
4:30, Wilks did not have a physique ready for Big East play. That's why the somewhat obvious call should have been for a redshirt this season - 4:19
Wilks has KB skills, but he needs the 25 lbs of muscle. once he gets it, watch out! He will get it sooner or later.
Yeah, I don't get not redshirting him this year. They should have thought of that right out of the gate when he qualified early.
By redshirting early he gets a head start on his classwork, he hits the weight room, he still gets to practice (I believe) and become better acclimated all around to be ready to contribute fully next year.
Think about it: If I'm that kid and I'm not playing this year and they're saying I'll redshirt next year, I'm transferring.
Well 4:30, even rickNmd agrees with me for once! Wow! - 4:19
5:35: if he transfers he has to sit out a year anyway, unless he goes JUCO and DII, and there is no way he will do that.
