Some thoughts on Aldridge
Some of you have wondered if Nick Aldridge, because he had problems with Larry Hunter at Western Carolina, might also be a problem for Mick Cronin. I don't think so. I talked to a reporter from the Ashland paper last night and he told me that he didn't think Aldridge's transgressions, whatever they were, were anything major. He said Hunter was very complimentary when talking about Aldridge last year. He was suspended before the Elon game this season for violating unspecified team rules and after that decided to leave the program.
This seems like a good pickup for UC. I know that Mick has passed on some players that he could have had because he thought they might be a problem, so if he's' taking Aldridge, he must be convinced that he won't be a problem. Remember, this guy was recruited by Bob Huggins, who didn't take a lot of players who couldn't play. He gives UC another offensive weapon, more depth and some badly needed experience - albeit at a mid-major program - for next year. What's more, he has nearly three years of eligibility remaining.
This has been a very good week for Mick and UC, beginning with the win over Louisville and then with the decision by Aldridge to transfer. If the Bearcats win at St. John's tomorrow - and that shapes up as a winnable game - they will be in the enviable position of starting their Big East season with two road wins and four of their next five games at home. Any team in the league would love to be in that position.

I like adding Aldridge because of the versatility he's adding to the roster. His style is different, so he's going to give you an option against certain opponents. He's a very resourceful scorer around the basket -- a little bit like the Pollitz kid from Miami. He also plays hard.
He won't average 18 ppg for UC, but he will be a legitimate threat that on given nights will be capable of scoring 20 points and will otherwise give you quality minutes.
If Nancy hadn't messed up the coaching situation with Huggins we would already have had Alridge for two seasons.
Hey 12:43 anonymous...try life in 2008 instead of 2005. Go 'Cats!
Couldn't agree more with Anonymous 12:49!!
Nancy messed it up, but Mike Thomas and Mick Cronin will fix it. Even if Aldridge had been here from the start, he's not a guy who is going to get UC back to where it needs to be. Guys like Yancy Gates and Biggie McClain are, though.
Bill, I'm loving the balance between news and your own thoughts on the blog so far... my own thoughts tell me that now that Aldridge has transferred Mick will not be getting Scotty Hopson or Bud Mackey... but maybe he will still pick up a Center for the '08 class still?
Thanks Bill for clarifying that Aldridge will have about 2.5 years of playing time with UC beginning in late December 2008 for the 2008-09 year and continuing thru the 2009-10 and 2010-11 years.
Lets dream about yesterday and live in the today and tomorrow.
I just hope using this scholly doesn't affect our chances of getting Mackey and/or Hopson and another true low post player or point guard. Bringing Aldridge in may mean that Mick isn't very optimistic about Williams getting another year from The NCAA.
Why does everybody seem to leave the UC Board of Trustees out of the equation? Let's make that the BOT/Zimpher/Huggins fiasco. It couldn't have happened w/o the great BOT. Does anyone know how many of them are actually UC grads?
The correct question would be "how many of them are grads".
That BOT did us all a favor. Our national rep was CRAP - sorry, but it's true. Every school has some kids who screw up, we had several. Every school has some kids who don't work academically, we had many, including two during AK's year who just decided to bag on class the last eight weeks. Every school has a coach who makes mistakes, ours made several, including one that was, as the local paper recently coined, a murder waiting for a victim. The local men in blue had pulled him over several times before for DUI, they just got him home because of who he was.
I champion Z, and I champion the BOT, because they had the guts to do what Goin did not. And it was the right thing. When we become competitive in the Big East in the next two years it will prove it was absolutely the right thing.
P.S. Huggs' coaching was getting stale, anyway. This was probably the best thing that could have happened to his career ... and his pocketbook. Unfortunately he's still out there recreating history to match his vendettas. Huggs is living proof that you can be a big guy but still be small. Cronin may be small of stature, but his heart is huge, and he can lead and coach these young men. I love where we are and I'm loving where we're going.
I have no idea if any of the BOTs have degrees from UC, but the newly appointed member does.
This is from the Enquirer- "Richardson, an associate at the downtown law firm that also includes Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune, earned a bachelor’s degree in 2002 from UC and a law degree in 2005. He is an executive-board member of the Cincinnati NAACP and a member of the Cincinnati Park Board."
This guy is replacing Phil Cox - Oscar's buddy who(along with Huggins' behavior) helped get Huggs shoved out of town. The NAACP has done such great work in Cincinnati, it will be nice to have him on board. HA HA HA
Sorry, couldn't miss out on the opportunity to add sarcasm.
Funny how there hasn't been any problems at K-State or WVU.
The problem was with NaZi and the BOT!!!
Funny how there hasn't been any problems at K-State or WVU.
Give it time, it isn't for lack of trying. One of Huggins' first moves when he began at K-State was to try to sign noted miscreant Tyree Evans:
http://media.www.kstatecollegian.com/media/storage/paper1022/news/2007/03/27/Sports/Signing.Evans.A.Risky.Move-2793749.shtml
Were it not for the AD's decision, Evans would be wreaking havoc in Manhattan right now.
Mr Koch - Aldrisge has 2 seasons of eligibility left.
He played as a frosh and soph at WCU.
The NCAA counts his 5 games this year as his soph year of eligibility.
There are no 1/2 years of eligibility.
9:10, BH was at KState less than one year, and I don't think they're too enamoured with Bobby right now. And he hasn't yet been at WV a year yet.
I was someone who was tickled to death when Huggins came to UC. I was also tickled to see him go (granted the circumstances could have been better, but again, he had a role in that as well.)
Woody Hayes was an icon at OSU, yet he had to be removed in disgrace. Bob was headed down the same path. Seriously.
I hope for his sake that the events of the last 3 years have spared him from that fate.
Gee. Any thoughts on Nick Arlidge? BTW. I think it is a good signing. UC needs this guy for next year.
To those ripping Nancy pants and the BOT, please get over it. It's been years, and it's time to move on. I think Zimpher is a joke, and the direction of the University beyond just the team is a travesty. But, this is a sports blog, right?

Hey Bill,
thanks for picking up where Josh left off. The Aldridge kid is a nice pickup.....he will add depth, scoring off the bench, and last but certainly not least he will stay 3 years and leave with a degree in his hands. It's a win win for everybody involved.
With BK running the football operation and Mick here for the long haul as our basketball CEO, the Golden Years for UC Athletics are right around the corner. It's going to be fun!
Go Bearcats!!
Actually, UC was not among the worst of problem universities. It just happened that the press hated huggins and the major colleges hated huggins and UC's success so, everyone focused on UC. That is what happens once you get the target on your back. UConn was so much worse than UC was during that same time frame. They had players steal computers from the school and only missed preseason games. Other schools had murders and rapes and so many other crimes. Only, the highlights were on UC. Even X had as many drug and drinking problems as UC but that was kept quiet.
Yes, I was tired of the UC bad news. Yes, I am glad that Huggins in gone. No, I am not happy with the way the BOT and Z got rid of him. No, I am not happy with the lack of deffense by UC's SID to combat the onslot by the local and national press. Look at the UC basketball graduation for instance. Sure, the old rating system had UC as zero, but that has been changed and if UC was rated by that, it would be much better. Also, most of those players have degrees now.
Remember though, UC's grad rate was higher than Z's old college.
Quit bashing my school!
yea, it is great to have one of Strickland's poitical flunkies on the BOT.
We would be better off with the human helicopter.
Bill does Aldridge remind you of any of the guys that played with the Big O since you covered them then? Did you have a lot of hair back in the late 50s?
Start a thread with a player transferrring in.....and look how things digress......Institutional Civil War is never a good thing and the remnants are still palpable. The true measure of a leader is do they strengthen the organization and clearly NZ destroyed one of the University's greatest assets and alienated thousands of its most loyal supporters. NZ and the BOT's decapitation of the program will never be forgotten. EVER. Let's also not forget the Andy Kennedy treatment- Ole MIss is 13-0 and its despicable and embarassing how they treated that man.Shame on you BOT,NZ, and Yes, Mike Thomas....if you gave AK an ultimatum to throw his Coach under the bus as a prerequisite for the job.
I love how people think NZ ruined this program. Refresh my memory for a moment: Was it Nancy Zimpher or Bob Huggins driving that Lexus with vomit down the driver's side door that nice June evening? And that wasn't the first time according to police. And was it Nancy or Bob who had players getting arrested for beating their girlfriends, beating their roommates (a la Donald Little...oh, and burning them with cigars...NICE!), and beating police horses, and getting arrested for carrying a concealed weapon (Roy "Not-So" Bright)...since when were all these issues Nancy's fault? Please understand (I know it will be hard for some of you...what with your benign basketball intelligence) that BOB HUGGINS created this mess. Nancy just washed her hands of it. I'm not her fan, could care less about the woman, don't much care for how they treated AK (what a great coach and even greater human being...hope he continues to succeed). But stop echoing the social mentality of not owing up to responsibility. Bob Huggins is the one responsible for the undoing of UC basketball. Let's use this scenario instead: IF BOB HUGGINS DOESN'T STRAP ONE ON AND DRIVE HOME YACKING OUT HIS WINDOW AND FALLING ASLEEP AT RED LIGHTS, THEN WE WOULDN'T BE IN THIS SITUATION. Does that make some sense? Can you grasp that idea? Stop living in 2000. Kenyon and Melvin are long gone. It is what it is and will only get better. If you're not a fan and have no patience, get the hell off the bandwagon.
