Mauk, Kelly reactions

Mauk said he thought he had a good chance to get the extra year, but that he respected the NCAA's decision.
"Those two years were out of my control with redshirting and getting hurt," he said. "I had no choice in either of those years where I couldn't participate.
"It's not like I went into (Wake Forest) Coach (Jim) Grobe's office and said, 'Hey, Coach, I want to sit out this year. I don't want to play.' Coming in as a freshman, I wanted to play. Obviously, you never want to sit out. I thought I could help the team out and I wasn't allowed to play so I thought it was out of my control."
According to NCAA rules, a redshirt year is under the control of the coach and/or the student-athlete. In other words, according to the NCAA, Mauk could have refused to redshirt.
That's basically what this came down to.
"Are we disappointed?" said UC coach Brian Kelly. "Absolutely. There's no question that we're disappointed. I don't know I would say we were surprised when it came to this. We were prepared for the worst and hoping for the best.
"The NCAA had come back to us and asked for additional medical information and maybe we were wrong in assuming it was going to come down to a decision relative to the medical, but it really had nothing to do with that. It was still about the redshirt year in 2003."
UC' s contention was that even if Mauk did have a choice in redshirting in 2003, granting him a sixth year would not have benefited Wake Forest because he's no longer there. Obviously, the NCAA didn' t buy that reasoning.
Kelly said if the season started to tomorrow, senior Dustin Grutza would be UC's starting quarterback, but the season is a long way off. Obviously, the job is wide open, with Notre Dame expected to challenge Grutza for the starting job.

I love the NCAA - they are worried about nothing but $$$$$ and could care less about the student athlete. I realize Mauk isn't a physical specimen for a quarterback, but he could have a legit chance of making an NFL team if given another year of development in college. People might have questions about his size, but Drew Brees has overcome that knock and is doing well in the NFL. Nonetheless, UC should still be ok next year - just would have been nice to see the NCAA cut us a break.

Yeah...I've always known it was in a freshman's purview to select red shirting. What a crock of shin-o-la!

All of Notre Dame is challenging Grutza for the position?!?!?!? That should be one heck of a QB competition!

1:55, I stand corrocted. I always thought the N in NCAA stood for NONSENSE.

Mauk has as very very little shot at being an NFL QB. With his injuries there is no reason a team would be interested in him. That aside, he deserves one more year of College Football.

He was able to motivate the team last season as the new guy. Bring him on as a student coach this year to motivate them to new heights. He is such a great competitor, he should be part of the program.

He also seems to understand BK's system. He would be an asset to the program.

What I want to know is who is the clown from UC that interfaces with the NCAA on these issues? Hernol Hall, Adam Hryzanuk, Ben Mauk,... have they ever had one of these rulings go their way?

8:42, if the NCAA would have known what a stud Adam H. really was, they would have approved him last year to "help" the Bearcats. Outside of that, practically never!

The NCAA has just changed it's initials to KNCAA.

The K stands for Knuckleheads.

If the NCAA wants to do something productive FOR student athletes and their member institutions they can look into recruiting violations by some of its most powerful members, such as the Devier Posey/Tressel issue. As for Mauk, he is not going pro, and allowing him another year only further defines what a student/athlete is....goes to school/plays sports. Ben Mauk seems like a fine young man and I wish him all the best.

#1 I am thoroughly dissapointed about Mauk. He was fun to watch and I enjoyed the last year. Another year would have been awesome. I wish him the very best.

#2 I love that this ND transfer is supposed to be able to walk on water because he transferred from ND. As a ND fan(bigger UC fan)I watched this guy and he was terrible. He got benched and shortly thereafter he quit. Everyone hates ND until you get a transfer from them and all of the sudden they are the storied program they always were. The guy is a quitter in my opinion and UC doesn't need anyones scraps to hold their own anymore.

#3 Grutza is our man. I think he is going to excel.

9:31 - While I'm not sold on the kid from Notre Dame, Weiss totally screwed him over. What did he get, a quarter and a half as the starter before he was benched for the year? And his replacement played equally poorly. Brian Kelly is a much better coach than Weiss, and should be able to get more out of him. Weiss is clueless and rode Belichick's coat tails.

Can Mauk appeal?

Bill, maybe you skipped that Editing 101 class in Journalism school. Why would Notre Dame challenge for the Quarterback position? Are they overloaded with 85 Quarterbacks? Maybe they want to challenge the fact that UC has a Quarterback? Try reading your blog, or getting a new set of glasses.

Dude, stop whining and crying. Nobody said that Jones walks on water and nobody said that Notre Dame's players sucked. He was benched after 3 plays because Claussen was Weis' guy from the start. For the record, nobody cares whether or not you think he's a quitter. You're a Notre Dame fan and you're NOT a UC fan. Period. You're just a bitter Notre Dame fan who is upset that Jones will have a chance to succeed. You clearly didn't watch him play. 3 plays and he's terrible. You're either an idiot or you don't know anything about football.

Exactly jt. Jones is a quarterback built on the spread offense. Notre Dame doesn't run anything like that, and refused to adjust their offense to their quarterbacks, which is stupid. Everyone sees this guy's talent. On a side note, I find it amusing that someone would praise Mauk in one sentence and then trash Jones as "scrap that UC grabbed" in another sentence. Sounds like a bitter Notre Dame fan to me. As for him being "scraps", Kelly recruited Demetrius Jones VERY hard at Central Michigan, even though Jones was a 4-star recruit, so obviously he would have played for Kelly no matter where he coached.

By the way, your boy Weis is a liar. He told Jones that he would have a legit shot at starting, then came out and basically said that Claussen was his guy. Claussen really proved himself, Notre Dame going 3-9 and all.

Looks like the Kittycats will be lucky to make the Papajohns.com Bowl again next season.
