UC's progress under Cronin

No one who follows the UC basketball program wanted to see it go through what it has the past few years, but it’s clear the Bearcats are on their way back. It has been interesting to follow UC's progress under Mick Cronin the past two years, to see how he has taken a program with only one player and rebuilt it to the point where it’s currently tied for sixth place in the Big East and will likely play in the Big East Tournament this year. With a strong finish, the Bearcats might be able to make it to the NIT.

Contrast that with St. John’s, whose program was also devastated three seasons ago. The Red Storm has failed to qualify for the conference tournament in three of the last four years, is struggling to make it this year, and according to a story in Sunday’s New York Times, some fans are calling for coach Norm Roberts, who’s in the fourth year of a five-year contract, to be fired. St. John's, which plays UC here Wednesday, started four freshmen against Providence because of an injury to Anthony Mason, Jr. It seems that in two years, UC has already made more progress in its revival than St. John’s has in four, even though the Bearcats did lose to the Red Storm back back on Jan. 5 in New York.

What tradition does St. John's have? Are you utterly serious?

St. John's is the 5th-most successful program in college basketball history (1,673 wins), and has the 7th-best winning percentage (.680) in the NCAA. St. John's boasts the 7th-most NCAA Tournament appearances (27), two Wooden National Player of the Year Award Winners, 11 consensus All-Americans, 6 members of the Hall of Fame and has sent 59 players to the NBA.

How many National Championships does ST John's have? How many Oscar Robertsons, Jack Twymans, Kenyon Martins have played there? How many St Johns players have gone on to play in the NBA. St John's basketball tradition is as strong as UC's. I DON'T THINK SO!

Excellent point, Bill.

Mick Cronin, Big East Coach of the Year. Has a nice ring to it, don't cha know...

Apparently Cheviot Bar Stool Authority hasn't heard of Louie Carnesseca. Or the great St Johns teams in the 80s and early 90s. Not surprising. How would he? He never leaves the bar. Hasn't been out of the west side his entire life. Lives vicariously through his TV set. Has never set foot on the UC campus. Hoping for his GED by 40. Thinks he actually knows Bob Huggins. Sends him Christmas cards every year, that is, until the Post Office got tired of all the address changes.

Sad delusional loser. Poor sap. Been off the borderline personality meds too long.

Cmon back, Bar Stool Authority, it's time for your secondary trolling under "anonymous". You've gotten so desperate in your trolling, you're starting to be funny, in a pathetic way.

Keep up the good work, Mr Koch. You might wanna clean up aisle 5 though. Full of stale mechandise called Trolls.

What tradition does St John's basketball have? That program has never been a top notch program and never will be.

Tell that to Lou Carnesecca who took St. John's to the postseason in EVERY one of his 24 seasons there.

Stick to "Cheviot Sports" where you're an authority. Which is what? Bowling, cornhole and other "sports" where a beer belly is compulsory.

This team has improved significantly, not just from last year, but from the beginning of this year. For all you trolls like CSA, here are the facts:

RPI of 73, up over 100 from last year. This improvement was achieved against the 4th toughest schedule in the country.

Six conference wins, including wins at Lousiville and West Virginia. At stage of the season, only Georgetwon has more conference road wins. The Bearcats will likely finish with at least 9 conference wins, with perhaps as many as 12.

Have the freshman played like freshman most of the time? Absolutley. Will they get better, absolutely.

Is this the level of achievement we want from UC B-ball year in and year out? No, but considering that there was essentially one player on scholarship when Mick Cronin showed up two years ago, the level of improvement is pretty remarkable.

Folks, the Cheviot Bar Stool Authority exhibits what are classicly called The Lack of Sensible Educated Response Syndrome. Of course in the industry we call it the L.O.S.E.R. Syndrome.

As with many borderline delusional personalities. e.g. Sybil, there is a tendency to assume many personalities within a given blog. The entire process is geared towards the needed goal, a desperate and sick craving for attention.

The problem comes in interactions, either verbal or written, with these emotionally ill personality types. Their needs are so great they invent fictitious information and sources as experts to back up their cravings and desperate need to be right. In short, these individuals have NO credibility.

Because of the lack of credibility, these types rarely have any primary relationships, other than with their hand. They are like little children, crying out for attention for simply the sake of such.

Just as we do with a crying child who needs to go to sleep, the best thing you can do is simply ignore the L.O.S.E.R. Talk around him as if he isn't there. Like most borderling personalities, if ignored, they turn their deperate needs upon themselves, and eventually destroy themselves. Pleas urge them to continue to take their meds, it may be a cast of life or death.

Oh and let me say, as a former collegiate offensive lineman at Texas, and follower of college hoops, I second the notion of Mick Cronim for Coach of the Year. Congratulations on the great year so far and once again,,,,, I'm waraning you guys,,,,do not feed the animals. It only encourages their dysfunctional behavior.

Lion Mutilates 42 Midgets in Cambodian Ring-Fight

Spectators cheered as entire Cambodian Midget Fighting League squared off against African Lion

Tickets had been sold-out three weeks before the much anticipated fight, which took place in the city of Kâmpóng Chhnãng.

The fight was slated when an angry fan contested Yang Sihamoni, President of the CMFL, claiming that one lion could defeat his entire league of 42 fighters.

Sihamoni takes great pride in the league he helped create, as was conveyed in his recent advertising campaign for the CMFL that stated his midgets will "... take on anything; man, beast, or machine."

This campaign is believed to be what sparked the undisclosed fan to challenge the entire league to fight a lion; a challenge that Sihamoni readily accepted.

An African Lion (Panthera Leo) was shipped to centrally located Kâmpóng Chhnãng especially for the event, which took place last Saturday, April 30, 2005 in the city’s coliseum.

The Cambodian Government allowed the fight to take place, under the condition that they receive a 50% commission on each ticket sold, and that no cameras would be allowed in the arena.

The fight was called in only 12 minutes, after which 28 fighters were declared dead, while the other 14 suffered severe injuries including broken bones and lost limbs, rendering them unable to fight back.

Sihamoni was quoted before the fight stating that he felt since his fighters out-numbered the lion 42 to 1, that they “… could out-wit and out-muscle [it].”

Unfortunately, he was wrong.

There is absolutely no truth to the rumor that Mick Cronin was involved in anyway. However, Nancy Zimpher was reportedly seen leaving the premises.

6 and 5 in the Big East is a lot less embarrassing than a DUI video.

Last I checked that particular coach had a better record than UC.

BTW...is that really all that matters when looking at what Bob did for UC basketball? The chorus of "Bob got drunk" is really old... a lot of other great coaches have gotten drunk as well. One I can think of off the top of my head won a National Championship, and several have visited the final 4 with regularity.

But I guess that doesn't matter, because the fact that they got drunk negates everything else they've done.

Seems like a narrow focus to me!

But go ahead...shout out "Bob got drunk!" 100 times if that makes you happy.

Incidentally, the reason NZ waited to pull the trigger on Bob is because one of her bosses on the BOT also "got drunk"...I hope you fault her for not pointing that out as well..

False, she was talked out of pulling the trigger because Goin feared it would queer the Big East deal.

Billy Gillispie has the UK players buying into his system in his first year and ESPN now has them as a bubble team.

UC on the other hand hasn't made it to that point and won't until they leave the below .500 zone.

at 4:48 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

UC's progress under Cronin has been slow, laborious and just as painful as giving birth. And full of excuses. Seems like there is a lot more spin doctoring of the program than ever before - is that coming from mick or the SID?

at 5:02 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Billy Gillispie is a coach. And this is coming from somebody who dislikes Kentucky and their sorry butt fans. Wonder though why there weren't a slew of excuses coming from Gillispie's mouth when Kentucky was losing like someone else we know?

at 5:08 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

last i checked, kentucky did not go two full seasons without recruiting so comparing UC's coaching change to theirs is idiotic.
I'm just glad that the UC fan base is rapidly beginning to change back to what we all knew and loved for so many years. A couple of years ago, all we ever saw on these boards and in the media was negativity and despair. Now, we have people all over the sports world talking about the resurgence of UC basketball led by Coach Cronin, who is widely regarded as one of the best young coaches in the game. The shoe is starting to fill up for home games again, and the contigent of people who are attempting to dig their heels in protest is shrinking at an astounding rate!
Things are definitely getting brighter!!!

at 7:10 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let's try this one more time. Noone is comparing situations at UC and Kentucky. The comparison is in the amount of complaining. One coach did very little complaining when his team was losing and the other coach blames his players. I'll let you figure which is which. If some of you are capable of doing that objectively is entirely another matter.

Nancy's going nowhere. From the money, academic, institutional and facilities side, she's been a home run champ.

You really think the basketball crybabies, many of whom never donate a dime or buy a ticket, trumps money, academics and growing national reputation of the university as a whole?

No way.

Nancy hired Thomas, who hired Kelly, who has the biggest athletic money-maker, football, on the national landscape.

The basketball team, gutted three years ago, is making surprising progress on the rebuilding.

If you're BOT, if you have a grain of common sense, you're not kicking aside a successful school president because of Bob Huggins.

As Bobby Knight learned, you ain't never bigger than da Boss.

The fact is that Mick has a team that the pundits picked to finish last or second to last in the hunt for a Big E tourney berth and more. CSA,
Your post is a sad one. At least to me.
Sad because you seem to be an intelligent person who has expressed himself well regarding all sports in the Cincinnati area, and backed up his opinions with facts that support his position.
I have read with interest your thoughts in the past, especially regarding the Reds, and found them thought-provoking.
But now, as you must know, you are intentionally disregarding what many people have repeatedly said about Mick Cronin, Bob Huggins, etc., that disagree with your opinion -- and only cherry-picking a few comments from some that you can draw on to tar ALL Bearcat fans who like the direction that the program is heading.
I will not repeat the arguments that have been made over and over about the strengths and weaknesses of Mick Cronin. They have been made ad nauseum.
I will just say that your post is, at best, ingenuous. It reflects very poorly on you.
It is clear to me, anyway, that you and your band of anonymous "buddies" refuse to accept and refuse to root for the Bearcats' future success.
That is your right to do so.
It is also our right to choose to hope for the best for UC basketball without our words being twisted.
You are not a victim here. Unfortunately, your past reputation with me, anyway, has been tarnished.
I doubt if you care, but I just had to offer my opinion.

Cheviot Sport Authority Says . . .

"Unlike some of the bloggers on here, I have other things to do other than post on all available blogs."

Today alone he has posted at the following times over several Cincy.com blogs:

11:10 am
11:19 am
11:43 am
11:57 am
12:19 pm
12:47 pm
1:59 pm
2:10 pm
7:27 pm
8:02 pm
8:11 pm
8:30 pm
8:33 pm
8:50 pm
8:53 pm
9:24 pm

This does not include all the anonymous postings he has made including some rather conspicuous and timed remarks from Anonymous "Your Buddy."

CSA posts at 2:10 pm, "Your Buddy "remarks at 2:16
CSA posts at 8:02 pm, "Your Buddy" remarks at 8:07
CSA posts at 8:50 pm, "Your Buddy" remarks at 9:03

A couple of days ago "Your Buddy" would post within 2-6 minutes of select CSA remarks.

And ya know what? There's not one "Your Buddy" posting about any subject except slapping CSA on the back.

Make of it what you will but this guy has become a cancer across all the Enquirer sports blogs.

Hey Dave,

We didn't expect 25-4 but did expect better than 11-12 at this point. I hope they win many of their remaining games and finish over .500 but I just don't have complete faith in Sippin' Mick.

By the way, at least in Mike Decourcey's opinion (he was on with Daughtery earlier, UC will unlikely make the NIT at this point. He doesn't think even making the back of the NIT is a realistic possibility.

I don't think UC making the NIT is very likely either but that's okay. After last year, if they can reach the BE Tourney, get to .500 and win more conference games than they lose I'll consider it movement in the right direction, especially with this upper class talent and six frosh.

Brad Paisly wrote a song about CSA called "Online". Go listen to it and you'll understand everything you need to know about CSA. 'Nuff said!
Yet another Cincinasti "student"-athlete has made the police blotter. So much for changing the criminal culture down there at Cincinasti College!

UC = UNLV East

...Or maybe not - UNLV has cleaned up its act, has a winning record, & will make the NCAA tourney this year.
....it's not like he stole his girlfriend's dog or anything.......

Buckeye Mike and others -

"People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones."

After all the trouble OSU has had over the years with student "athletes" in basketball and football, I find it astonishing that you feel you have ANY standing to criticize UC. We haven't had to take any banners down at UC for paying players. Are you forgetting the Randy Ayers and Jim O'Brian fiascos?

UC remains Thug U. It's a ghetto school with ghetto athletes.

Guess it wasn't Bob's fault after all that UC's reputation is in the crapper. Hear that Nancy?
