Vaughn, Downey and other thoughts
Unnoticed during UC's loss to Marquette yesterday was the fact that Deonta Vaughn clearly outplayed Dominic James. Vaughn scored 23 points while James had eight points on 2-9 shooting, 0-5 from 3-point range. Vaughn has averaged 21.1 points over his last 13 games and needs 109 points to become the 32nd player in UC history to score 500 points in a season. Here's what Marquette coach Tom Crean said about Vaughn after the game yesterday:
"What they’ve done with him development-wise and strength-wise, they’re really improving their players. Deonta Vaughn is the recipient of that work. He’s got great range, a quick release and he can get to the iron. When he’s in a trap, he doesn’t force plays. He’s going to be an outstanding guard for a long time."
You may have noticed that Devan Downey scored 25 points yesterday for South Carolina against his old coach, former UC interim coach Andy Kennedy. It made me wonder what it would be like now at UC if Downey had stayed after Kennedy left and UC had both Downey and Vaughn at guard. Of course, maybe Vaughn wouldn't have signed with UC if Downey were still there. Who knows? The bottom line is that Vaughn has emerged as an outstanding player poised to be the cornerstone of Mick Cronin's program for the next two years.
UC is off today and tomorrow, then will begin Tuesday to prepare for Saturday's game at Rutgers. That will be followed by home games vs. St. John's and USF. If all goes well, they could be 8-5 in the league on Feb. 20. But after the performance they turned in Saturday, it would be foolhardy to take anything for granted.
89 Comments:
Anyone with any sense could see Deonta would be a stud with a little time.He has come on even faster than I thought. But I have to question how much the coaching has to do with it since most of the others in large part have regressed.Just hard work on his part.If that work ethic continues Downey and Vaughn may team up in the NBA. "anonforever"
I didn't expect this bunch to beat Marquette but I also didn't expect them to get blown out at home after applying a whupping at WVU. You would think the Bearcats would have learned a few lessons after bad losses following wins against Louisville and Pitt.
I guess my curiosity is how many more wins would UC have if Downey was still around?
The frontline is still not very good and that plays more of a factor than the guard play. They are getting killed in the paint on both ends of the court.
I think it was a mistake for Mike Cronin to publicize how terrible UC practiced before the game Sat. His comments were even echoed by the TV announcers during the game. It was almost as if he had conceeded that they were going to loose due to their poor practice, sort of a self fulfilling prophecy. UC was defeated before they started. What goes on in practice should stay in practice. Mike should bless them out during practice, but by all means give them some encouragement in public. I believe because of Mike's comments the team, excluding Vaughn, had a defeatus attitude.
Anon 10:42- In what way have other players regressed? Warren is a much more poised, steady player this year. Williamson has had his issues- but seems to be playing better defense, and all around has a more mature game. Sikes can't get on the floor because of the freshmen. And Gentry has been about the same as he was last year- but the freshmen are better players. Fact is the team is better than they were last year, and to me that is progress.
Anon 11:31- Although in the past I think Mick has been a little to liberal in criticizing his players, I don't think calling the team out for a bad practice is a detrimental thing. It's not like our former coach didn't say similar things such as: "We just aren't any good." I believe Mick is using it as a teaching point, namely the kids were getting a little too puffed up, not listening, and they had to learn the hard way with a loss.
I can't wait until we have a real team again. Then what will some of you crybabies complain about? Of course, that might have to wait until we also have a real coach again.
Nothing wrong with the coach on hand. But he'll never get a chance with some of you revisionist bores.
Wake me when the NCAA tournament starts. Oh, but by then the UC season will be quite over. It will be nice to watch some real sports today.
CSA, what I like about you is that at least one other person doesn't wear the 'I Love Mick No Matter What' rose colored glasses. Did you notice the fiasco yesterday was completely the players' fault, according to Mick? - Anon 1:17
1:38 of course its never Mick's fault. I know he had the perfect game plan to beat Marquette but those stupid players are just to dumb to listen. If he had the Mike Williams this year the team would probably be undefeated and the officials have got it out for the Bearcats too. You know I think Mrs Z told him not to wear the hideous red suit and shoes, that his coaching and lousy team were enough of an embarrassment.
Z wants to wear the red suit so it matches her hideous red lips and contrasting yellow teeth.
TV color guy Jarvis said James was nursing sore wrist and couldn't bring his A game.
He speculated that Bearcats were actually guarding him too close and he wasn't a threat from the outside.
CSA, Of course it is Mick's fault. I mean, all of our players should be the #1 pick in the nba draft this year. If it weren't for Mick and Nancy and the BOT getting in their way.
Hey 2:26. In the last two years, only Ron Allen and Adam H. have any NBA hoops dreams. Glad you recognize talent when you see it!
Question: Why are so many so reluctant to give Mick any props or have any patience at all? Why do you guys hate him so?
2:30, thanks for helping my point. Mick can only do so much, but eventually the players have to be the ones to put the ball in the basket. If they aren't making buckets Mick can't be the goto guy to produce the missing points. So really we can all point to everyone and say "its your fault". but its much easier to have a scapegoat than to have patience isn't it?
Dave in Omaha,
Your first question is a reasonable one. Mick gets so many accolades for every achievement he makes, and he has made some, that some bloggers feel obliged to take an opposing view. I'm somewhere in the middle, I don't hate Mick, but I'm not fully sold on him yet either. I believe in giving him a chance and agree that he was dealt a very difficult hand. That said, I would like to ask why you love him so much?
2:26 You make no sense. You say its not Mick's fault and then you say the players are #1 picks but Mick is standing in their way. Which is it?
By the way, I also believe that Biggie will rate right up their with Ron Allen and the H Bomb when his career is finished. I was told that this year's freshmen where a top 20 recruiting class. Well after 20+ games, not a one of them is making a significant contribution. Who can Mick blame that on?
CHEVIOT SPORTS AUTHORITY you are not the brightest bulb around. Mitchell, Bishop, and Belton are making progress. McClain will be fine when he gets some weight on him. Larry Davis is going to be really good. If you can't see all that then you are so clueless you shouldn't be allowed to watch games.
Hey 2:42 -
You talk about Mick not being able to make buckets for the team yet if he had actually showed any talent at recruiting scorers that would be a problem. So far he hasn't.
It can be done quickly, as Kennedy can atest to. Mick just doesn't seem to recognize and/or doesn't have the recruiting prowess to add pure scorers.
Downey is a point guard and Vaughn is a 2 guard Bill. They play different positions.
If Mike Davis did not get fired at IU Vaughn would have gone to IU. If and butts...........
I am getting tired of "were are a young team crap". Purdue starts 3 18 year old Freshman, one Juco, and a Sophmore. First guy off of the bench is another freshman. Purdue will be ranked on Monday and they are in first place in the Big Ten.
Yes, Mick Cronin, chief recruiter for Huggins and Pitino really sucks at attracting talent. Yessiree.
Just because five blue-chip recruits didn't sign with UC in his first half season of recruiting when most of the top 100 talent had already committed means he really, really sucks.
And the reason Purdue has that freshmen talent is because a coaching staff was already in place to start recruiting them two years or more in advance.
Man, the blind and the blinded.
3:23 -
What is your explanation for Kennedy? He had the same time as Sippin' Mick and yet he's already recruited way more talent. Look at his scoring offense; one of the top in the nation (with many of his recruits contributing significantly to that ranking).
Again, why can't Mick find the scorers quickly like Kennedy; which in turn leads to a 16-4 record for a program that struggled before he came?
Hey, 3:01,
Mick recruited Alvin Mitchell who averaged 33pts per game as a senior. He has Cash Wright for next year who is averaging 36pts this year and Yancy Gates who can score from anywhere on the court. Larry Davis has shown he can get his own shot anywhere on the court. His defense just needs to get to a point where he can play extended periods of time without giving up as many points as he scores.
I think the reason there are the Mick haters out there and are so vicious is they realize their time to attack Mick is growing shorter with every passing day. This team will make the BE tourney and could make some noise in it. They may end up in the NIT and with some luck, in the NCAA tourney. Next year they will be even better and the following year they should return to national prominence. These haters will then have no basis for their arguments.
Everyone else but these few anons can see where this program is headed. Ignore them, the only opinions that matter are Mike Thomas and the athletic department. Those of us who see where the program is headed should take comfort in knowing that coaches like Boehim, Calhoun, Dixon, Pitino and even Huggins have praised Mick for the job done so far and know that Cincinnati will be back sooner rather than later with Mick at the helm.
Also 3:23, this year's freshman UC class was ranked top-15, yet they aren't showing nearly the progress other teams' freshman are. Must be the coaching then.
3:27 -
I'm just not seeing that scoring you are referring to. Why is Mick's offense not top-10 in the nation like Kennedy's Ole Miss offense? I imagine his offense will get even better next year with more pure scorers coming in.
"at 3:23 PM Anonymous said...

Man, the blind and the blinded."
They are a younger team than UC. Doesn't matter when they were recruited they are still first year Freshman. Purdue starts 4 first year players and they are not Duke, UNC, or Kansas type athletes.
Man, just can't see what is right in front of you. Matt Painter isn't using the same excuses UC is.
I hope Cashmere Wright scores more than Alvin has this year even though they scored about the same as seniors. Alvin might be one of the better shooters on this team but that shows how bad the team's offense is and nothing more.
If Cashmere brings similar numbers to the table, the team will likely score around 60-65 PPG again next year.
For thoses of you who think UC is headed to the NIT do not get your hopes up. UC could just as easily lose their remaining games than win half of them. UC is 10-12 people that is what is refered to as a losing record. The NCAA tourney? You got to be kidding me.
When Mick understands that acting cool and young is not working and he starts with discipline and taking minutes away from non producers this team will get much better. After a performance like to one vs. Marquette Huggs would have this team dressing in the girls locker room.
WVU has some some serious lack of talent but they are 16-6, not 10-12.
To answer Omaha: I do not hate Mick Cronin. I don't think that he is the man for the job and I do not like all of his excuses. We all know that he has a tough job, but he obviously wanted it, so let him take the heat. I am not a Bob Huggins lover either. He did a great job here, but I have no qualms about letting him go. What does bother me is the fact that there was no need to dismantle the program. Even with the BS way that they let Huggins go, they could have salvaged the program by just letting Andy Kennedy take over. The disrespect that the present administration showed Andy Kennedy is, in my opinion, unforgivable, especially the plug pulling incident.
Mick Cronin may turn out to be a great coach at some point in the future (He has not shown me anything yet). But the UC Basketball program should not be a training ground for head coaches. Mick's top qualification for the job was that Bob Huggins hated him. Zimpher hired him to spite Huggins. So until the program is consistently back in prominence, led by Mick Cronin or someone else, I will not be watching though the rose-colored glasses that the uninformed and/or the mis-informed, or the easily brain-washed are wearing.
Unfortunately about the only thing that I can do about the situation is bitch and complain, so there you have it. Show me a winner and I will stop complaining. Same goes for the Reds and the Bengals. Guess I will still be complaining for a long time.
Well you're the cat's furball if you think the quality of freshman available at the end of a recruiting cycle is the same as one that's been cultivated throughout his high school career and signed in the early period. Freshmen are not freshmen.
They have these little things called poop sheets and top 100 lists and high school positional rankings . . . they might teach you something.
You're a newspaper's website. Maybe you should read the newspaper once in a while. You'd know this stuff.
Anyone can score in the SEC, Big East teams actually try to guard each other and play team defense instead of seeing who can be the first to score 80/90 points in a game. I'll be the first to admit that I would rather play in a more offensive conference but the Big East is not that type of conference.
Bottom line is all of us, the Mick haters and the Mick defenders are not qualified to speak on the job that Mick has done. If we were, we'd have athletic director jobs or coaching jobs at major college universities. It seems to me, the only people who think Mick is doing a bad job reside here in the Tri-State area.
To comment on those who don't think this is a NCAA tournament team, what if they win the Big East tourney? It may be a long shot but just 2 years ago, Syracuse probably needed to win the Big East tourney to get in and did so. So it is possible.
My honest opinion is that they finsih 10-8 in conference - 15-15 overall and win 1, maybe 2 BE tourney games and make the NIT. But the reality is no one knows for sure what will happen because no one can predict the future.
And to those who keep comparing Kennedy and Cronin, let's see who wins the first conference title, tourney title or NCAA tourney title. So what if Kennedy makes it to the NCAA this year and Cronin does not. If Cronin wins a Big East title within the next 3-5 years or the NCAA title over that same period of time, then who has done more with their respective teams.
No matter what anyone says, Mick is going about it the right way in building a team. When a building is destroyed, in order to rebuild it, you need to build a foundation first, then once the foundation has been laid, you can start to add the ammenities and luxuries that make the building attractive to others. The class of '06 and '07 are the foundation, the '08 class with Wright/Gates are adding some of the amenities needed to take this team to the next level.
CSA ,great post.Exactly the way I feel.Especially the excuses. Most fans understand the situation and pitfalls.
3:51 You are far too sharp for me, boy. I don't have the slightest idea what the hell your post was all about. But I do know a bunch of duds when I see em. Go back to your newspaper or whatever you were doing. I am going to go take a crap a wipe with my newspaper.
CSA: (paraphrasing) "Waaaaah, our freshmen aren't the very top of the top and are soo bad that they can't even go to the nba this year. Waaaah, our team really sucks because we aren't undefeated. Waaaaaah, I can't support any team that may not be the undisputed best at everything. Waaaaah I have to wait until someone is the best to support them."
I hope you never have kids because you won't support them and would probably criticize them too until they became perfect like you.
Bottom line: no one likes the situation that our basketball team has become. You can't argue that. Poeples' character comes in to play when they decide to stick through the hard times as opposed to bailing. You have made your choice and your character shows. Am I happy with how things went down. Absolutely not. But, as opposed to you, I see this team getting better and I know that the future is looks very bright (no pun intended).
I'm not asking you to drink the cool-aid that the administration is serving, just don't be so doom and gloom all the time.
4:10 your childish post is really not worth answering, but I am curious, what makes the future look so bright to you?
Duh, the leap from 2 conferences wins in one entire season to 5 with 8 more to play and wins against three of the league's better teams, all of which are going to the NCAA tournament.
You were too busy bellyaching to obviously notice.
There is no one who makes more childish and repetitive rants on these Reds/Bengals/Bearcats blogs than Jack in Blue Ash aka Clueless Krivsky aka CSA aka Anonymous with cap letters.
You are stupid!
Now Jack is posting anonymously as well as Clueless Krivsky and CSA. What a scream. What a tool.

UC recruting class was a top 15 class. Look dummy it doesn't matter how long you have been recruiting HS talent, it matters what you do with those players.

4:35 PM
UC is 10-12 period. This is not a good team.
geeze CSA, you're such a girl
The reason the belly-achers have returned with such a vengeance is because they had a long week holding their breath after expecting to wale on Mick after the WV game, but getting just the opposite result from what they expected.
I'll make this simple for the simple-minded: If you don't recognize how much progress this team has made this year and how much the program has made from rock bottom 18 months ago, you just don't have a clue about the realities of college basketball.
I believe what was said is UC is a BETTER team, but like 4:35 and 4:37 said, you're too busy bellyaching and twisting words, Jack/CSA/Clueless Krivsky.
We ALL know what UC record is. Unlike you, we can read AND comprehend.
Now go back to the Super Bowl--if you know how to turn on your TV. Hit the little red button on the remote.
There are reasons why we are 10-12 this year. The focus has to be on our lack of athletic ability and quality players. With time, Mick will be able to land top-100 recruits. Then, and only then will we be able to beat the Uconns and Georgetowns of the college basketball world. Effort can only get you so far. You must have to athletes/scorers to go along with that hustle.

It is not about beating GTown and UConn, dummy. It is about beating Belmont, Bowling Green, etc.
10-12, 10-12, 10-12, 10-12, 10-12.
It's becoming increasingly more of a job to determine who ranks as the most ignorant on this blog between the Mick lovers, the Mick haters, the o$u trolls and the x trolls. Life sure is difficult these days.
i'm looking forward to 2010 when we can focus on blogging about BB. Waiting for UC to get good again sucks.

If it is too much of a job then quit. I don't think anyone hates Mick Cronin, but a 10-12 record is flat out underacheiving. UC had a top 15 recruiting class. It is wrong to brag or be happy about beating Big East teams when the expectation should be, who the hell are you to beat UC. At this point in the season a 15 point loss at home to Marquette is terrible.
Boy, your memories are certainly short. Who coined the "we didn't have a good week of practice" excuse? I'll give you a hint: he also coined "Chuck, we're just not a very good basketball team right now."

I'm looking forward to when we can blog about how good UC BB is again.
Biggie will join a list of great UC big men such as Ron Allen and the Rock. LOL
I see Yancey at Center next year, Vaugn and Wright at the guards, William at PF and various at SF. Biggie will still be lumbering up court for 5 min a game to give Yancey a blow.
bearcatjack leave your comments to yourself especially if you don't know the head coach's name. Its Mick not Mike. He should have critized them if they didn't work hard. The players need that and deserve that. Thats is what coaching is all about critizing when the players don't practice/play as hard as they should.

Was Huggs ever 10-12? Folks it is what it is 10-12. Huggs had about 5 scholly players his first year and they still went to the NIT.
Could we get someone else to introduce the players at our games. The guy doing it this year is embarrassing the school and himself. He is horrible!
Embarrassing himself and the school? No more so than Adam H. out there pretending to shoot layups.
Please can this city stop comparing Mick to Bob. I love Huggins. I am 22 years old. I grew up sitting on my dad's lap in the top 5 rows of the Shoemaker City. Bob is gone it is time to move on. Like what Pitino once said but paraphrased, "Bob isn't walking through that door, Nick isn't walking through that door, and Kenyon isn't walking through that door." I really hope that all of never watch or attend another Bearcat game again because you don't deserve to.
The excuses some make for Sippin' Mick are laughable.
The team is 10-12. They are below average even with a top-15 recruiting class about to finish its first full year, in addition to a bunch of second-year players.
Plenty of coaches with classes lower than No. 15 and not many other players are performing better than 10-12.
OK baby boy. You're the new boss.
I really want to see your proof. Show me a team in the Big East that does not have 3rd or 4th year player. Oh wait you won't find a team in all of college basketball. Get some knowledge before you start posting. No one in the country is playing with what Mick playing. Get off the blog if you don't like UC.
Don't call me baby boy. I don't agree 100% with what Mick does. I have a high knowledge of basketball, and find myself screaming at the tv very often. Like last game the last 10 min. of the game they should have taken it to the rim and the didn't. But people need to lay off. Let him get his own guys in here and see what they can do.
11:16 -
Those JUCOs are seniors, even if not at this level. Other teams have almost all freshman and lots of JUCOs and are doing much more than Sippin' Mick.
Look at the primary contributors at Ole Miss and see which ones Kennedy recruited. He knows how to bring in high-powered offense quickly unlike Mick.
Huggins didn't start off in a Big East caliber conference. He started off the Metro. If I can remember correctly the top teams other than UC were Dayton, St. Louis, and Louisville. Let's wait to see how Huggins does this first year in the Big East.
Kennedy 3-4 in the SEC. He really had a tough non-conference schedule. Let me know how many teams he beat in the top 50 of the RPI and get back to me.
11:34 -
Let me know which coach will likely get to the Big Dance based on their team's performance and which will likely miss even the back end of the NIT and get back to me.
Cronin has a "top 15" recruiting class?? According to who?
I'm betting he will, next year, though.
And in 2 years, you Cronin/Nancy haters will be Bengal fans. Cheers.
12:06 -
According to rivals, UC's class was ranked No. 15 this year. Of course I think that included Jason Henry but he was a mistake recruit by Mick it appears.
Not sure about next year's class because I think it just missed the cut for top-25, and with no signs of pure scorers on the horizon, I'm not sure if it will go up much more if any. If Mick gets Mackey or Hopson it might go to top-15 or so but then this year's class was top-15 too and we see how little talent, particularly offensively, this class seems to have.
12:06, likely a Cronin/Nancy lover like you already is a Bengals fan and thinks they're the greatest abd the Reds are going to win the World Series too!
UC says they actually pay the announcer that introduces the players. He is embarrassing. He is hard to understand. That stuttering stuff introducing Bishop is stupid.
I think his name is Box Miller?
Making fun of stutters is not funny.
Adam H. missing layup after layup is more embarrassing. The clueless announcer disappears before the game. The layup embarrassment is there for the entire game.
I don't think he's making fun of stutterers. His intros do suck though, to the point that I think "box" stands for "box of rocks".
9:55, remember when the NCAA made Adam H. sit out a year for Pro BB in Europe. Maybe that team was paying him not to play or maybe paying him to come to America and pretend to be a BB player. Also remember hearing Mick tell us last year how much better we'd be if only Adam H. were eligible. Wouldn't that have been great? We would have had two years of this and not sadly only one.
What is it about the Internet that makes some people bring all their hate out and display it in public?
Yeah, if you tell it like it is, then it's labeled as 'hate'. But, regardless of that, don't stop calling it as you see it.
Yeah, but people say things on boards they would never say to the person face to face.
I wish Adam had both years, because just like SO MANY OTHER PLAYERS they can be much improved year to year. Fundamentally on defense he is very sound. If he could make a layup we wouldn't be having this discussion. Personally, I think he's like a deer in the headlights at times and that's why I'd like another year for him.
Yeah right. Tell me what other player near 7 foot in college BB that cannot hit a layup. What an obsolute joke! Give Adam H. another year just like the other seniors on this team. Tell us, which of them has improved over last year? Williamson? Sikes? Gentry? Possibly Warren has. Adam H. is precisely what Z wants. A nice kid who doesn't get into any trouble off the court. Too bad he is a problem on it.
Is it too late to ship Adam H. back to Poland? He's just a waste of space on the court.
CSA, yes it is too late. Look on the bright side though. It allowed us to see through some of Mick's hogwash for what it really was.
CSA and Anon 11:32,
Now look what you two have done. Soon, the 'We Love Mick No Matter What Defense Team' will be on the way. But please remember this: It can't be Mick's fault, so it is always the players' fault!
Who are the last 2 FB recruits BK is trying to land for 2008 on Wednesday's signing date?
They say that imitation is the greatest form of flattery. So for that, I must thank the young moron that is posting under my identity. But just to set the record straight, the mindless childish posts appearing on this thread last nite are bogus. Have fun kids, someday when you grow up, perhaps you can carry on an intelligent discussion, until then kiss my a$$.
If Mick is able to land either Hopson or Mackey, then we'll have more than one player who can actually shoot the ball. Right now, when have only Vaughn, and to a point Davis. Another shooter or two will open up the inside when we have someone who can play there. Hope he lands one or the other - can't wait. Either addition would boost UC BB!
CSA, it could possibly be a not young moron. Idiocy has no age requirements. Probably just a bored eastsider with nothing to do while living off his folks' money.
We wouldn't be in this mess if NanZi had just 'hired Andy'
AK and Huggins will have their teams in the NCAA tourney this year, while the Bearcats will be lucky to make the NIT.
We wouldn't be in this mess if the BOT and NanZi would have just handled the entire situation properly. I liked AK, but it could have been any other decent coach, who would have been a good fit at UC.
10:45 PM
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR MIKE CRONIN TO LAMBASTE HIS TEAM IN PUBLIC, CONCERNING THERE PRACTICE SESSIONS. He sent the message that his team was not ready to defeat Marquette. Somethings are better left unsaid. I believe UC carried that defeatus attitude into the game. FYI, Mikey boy's name is originally Mike, he prefers to be called Mick.
Please only say nice things about Mick. Don't forget that we should all love Mick no matter what! - The 'We Love Mick No Matter What Fan Club'
UC = UNLV East
...Or maybe not - UNLV has cleaned up its act, has a winning record, & has made the NCAA tourney last year.
