Hopson on TV tonight

UC fans can watch the McDonald's All-American game tonight at 9:30 on ESPN and salivate over the prospect of having shooting guard Scotty Hopson playing for the Bearcats next season. UC remains in the running for Hopson, who's considered one of the top 10 players in the 2008 recruiting class. He'll play for the West team. If Mick Cronin can pull it off, he would be quite an addition to a recruiting class that already includes point guard Cashmere Wright, power forward Yancy Gates, and guards Dion Dixon and Varez Ward.

Bill what really is the likelihood that he actually signs with UC? Out of 10 (10 being the best) what are the chances? Has UC shown interest from the outset? I just don't see it happening, but hey Mick is supposed to be a great recruiter.

Bill,

Any chance he will announce his choice tonight? How cool would it be if he chooses UC on national t.v.?

It would be nice to have a player of Hopson's talent but how many shooting guards does a team need?

Deonta Vaughn, Larry Davis, Alvin Mitchell (maybe),Ward, and Dixon...

You can't sit Vaughn or Cashmere Wright, so maybe a 3-guard offense and some of the other guys transfer.

Mick must not think he is going to get Hopson or he would not have gotten Dixon and Ward. Davis looks like he can ge a good player.

Too much talent and competition for playing time is a good problem to have.

I like Mick and I think he will get this thing turned around in the next 1-2 years.

The good thing about the Big East is that if you're the 6th best team, you can still find your way into the sweet 16.

I doubt if Hopson will announce his choice tonight. I'm told that it will happen closer to the signing date in a few weeks. As for the likelihood that he will actually sign with UC, I wish I had a crystal ball, but I don't.

Bill -

According to the guys doing the McDonald's All-American game, Hopson is considering U of L, Tenn, Miss St, UK, but not one mention of UC. Not that I am too worried about it, but it's kind of frustrating that it's a known fact Mick has been recruiting this kid and yet the national media refuse to discuss it.

Danny,

Maybe because Hopson appears highly unlikely to come to UC?

Unlike you and Bill and the other biased individuals on this board, most haven't been impressed by Mick's recruiting skills.

Why would they think Hopson would be thinking of playing for Mick instead of proven coaches like Pearl, Pitino and Gillispie, who have all shown they can coach and recruit?

And Ole Miss remains alive in postseason play. Their performance in the NIT might enable Kennedy to attract even more powerful offensive talent than he already has.

I wish Mick could recruit the offense like Kennedy.

Bearcats Fan -

In case you don't realize it, the offense that Kennedy has other than Warren his PG, was there when he arrived - the same for Huggins and for Martin. Mick had a bare cupboard when he arrived at UC - a fact that people like you continue to ignore - 1 SCHOLARSHIP PLAYER WHEN HE TOOK OVER. Nobody on here is giving Mick a free pass - it's just that Bill, along with all the other media in town understand the situation he inherited. The comparisons to Kennedy, Huggs, etc...need to stop. Their situations were light years better than what Mick had here - ask anyone in the country that understands college basketball - unfortunately that eliminates most UC fans on this blog page.

Danny,

If the offense is the "same," why has it gotten so much better under Kennedy than it had been? (Become one of the better units in the country)

You asked why they didn't mention UC, and other than you, Bill and the other non-objective individuals here, most are not impressed by Mick recruiting for Mick without the attachment of a proven coach.

Just admit that Mick's latest recruiting class is shaping up to be less than stellar unless something quickly changes. And this is a HUGE year recruiting wise for the program.

I'll be VERY disappointed if the '08 class currently in place is the best Mick can do.

As Danny said, most of the players on Ole Miss were there before AK got there. So, I don't think you can say he recruits great offensive players just yet.
And saying Cronin's 2008 class is bad, before they have played a minute, is a little short-sighted.
But, if you wanna do that..Rivals.com has Ole Miss as the 11th best in the SEC. UC 5th best in Big East.
I love AK, but c'mon. The guy had a lot more talent to work with, then Cronin did. A lot more.

You're judging the this past years recruiting class on their first season? How good was Kenyon, Hicks, Logan, Levitt their first year?

Also, Mick has proven he can recruit. He recruited Gates from the big time schools and he already won Cashmere from Tennessee. McClain was won over UConn and all kinds of schools were all over Wilks. Short term memory is a shame.
