Vaughn nearing 500
There hasn't been much for UC fans to get excited about in the last three games, but there is this: Deonta Vaughn needs only 16 more points to become the 32nd player in school history to reach 500 for the season. The last to do it were James White and Eric Hicks in 2005-06. He needs 82 points to become the 45th player to reach 1,000 points in his career at UC, which puts him on pace to finish ahead of Steve Logan as the No. 2 scorer in school history behind Oscar Robertson. He has a chance to become only the second player in UC history to reach the 2,000-point plateau. Logan scored 1,985 points. Oscar scored 2,973 in three seasons.

Pretty good company to be associated with at the end of your career - assuming he keeps it up and stays injury free. It's pretty amazing to think this guy is a Bearcat - it says something about Mick and his staff that they were able to land him. I am looking forward to the next two years with Vaughn and his teammates. Let the slamming begin!
Hello, all of you Mick Lovers! I just wanted to take a moment to tell each one of you just what a complete pleasure it is watching our membership roll continue to grow. And, the fact that it's even happening after a game in which our beloved coach had his team so unprepared is even more exciting. Anyhow, keep your heads up and remember how strongly we believe that Mick is going to return UC BB to national prominence.
Thank you again for your continued support of our organization.
Sincerely,
President of the 'We Love Mick No Matter What' Fan Club
Bill, I'm serious, there's a couple of posters here who are making this blog worthless. Their posts are not on-topic, sarcastic, and meaningless to your original posts. Their motives in posting on your blog are highly suspect. Can't you delete them, which would ultimately make them give up and disappear? I try to ignore them but it's like every other post. It's ruining your blog.
Bill, I'm serious, too. Guys like Anon 3:54 just want everything their way. If only everyone would just think exactly like he does and only write what he wants, then all is OK. Right?
I try to ignore the closed minded, ever serious, one issue folks, but "it just keeps getting harder every day."
If only you would make their ignorant posts just disappear...
For someone who scores so many points, he sure seems to have a TON of "off" games.

Hey 3:54 am,
I shared your frustration until i realized that most of the negative posters here are high school kids or Xavier fans.
I go to bearcat news blog for pretty good info, I come here because... hey i'm not realy sure anymore.
The "minutes" that moderation is taking have now lasted for at least three hours. Why, oh why can't we just be able to post and have the very few crude, rude or obscene posts removed. This slowdown is becoming very frustrating.
Anon 6:59,
We're not sure why you came here either. You had less than nothing to say and yet you complained. Go figure!
Has stanley Burrell ever had a GOOD game?
Vaughn is the best player we have had since Logan, he is already in good company.
An "Off" night for Vaughn is still 15 points.
Eat it, Mick haters. Lets see what happens when he has a full compliment of actual BIG EAST caliber players to put on the floor. Haters go on and on about the "seniors" as if they were all 4/5 years in the program...No, I'm not "I LOVE MICK AT ALL COST" guys, but I firmly am behind giving him the full chance to succeed or fail before connonizing or crucifying him. Huggins never got the chance that he deserved, and that's a damned shame and it still angers me. I hope better for Mick and will support him UNTIL HE PROVES THAT HE CANNOT GET THE JOB DONE. He's done a good job so far...
He does have a ton of "Off" nights, they only play twice a week.

Dave in Omaha,
Yes, we will eventually see what your good ship lolligag coach will do with a full complement of players. We've already gotten the opportunity to see how well this set of freshmen have improved over the course of almost an entire season, which is basically not at all.
I'd tell you to eat it yourself, but why stoop to your low level?
Sincerely,
President of the 'We Love Mick No Matter What' Fan Club
Bill,
Does Deonta Vaughn needs only 16 more points at the end of the REGULAR SEASON or end of BEAST TOURNY?
Thanks!
Timmy from FL
No JT,
Vaughn's off nights include not showing up in regulation against Rutgers (could have easily been a loss) and other weak performances against some quality and not-so-quality opponents. He has had some "huge" scoring games, but also plenty of clunkers.
Sippin' Mick Moniker Maker
Have you not seen how much Vaughn has improved in one season, imagine two more.
Bishop, Belton, Davis and Mitchell are all 4 year players, not one and done.
Suckin' Sean Miller Lite
Hey Va-jay jay, I mean anon,
I guess Jordan, Bird, Magic never had a bad game.
The other night Bill Walker went 0-20 and had 1 point. Wow, he must not be progressing.
Just because he is our only scoring option teams use every type of defense against him.
DEONTA IS THE FOCUS OF EVERY TEAM'S DEFENSIVE SCHEME.
Suckin' Sean Miller Lite
JT,
No, I haven't seen that much imprvovement from Vaughn. He still has some big games but tons of clunkers. He certainly hasn't shown the ability to carry a team offensively.
His shooting percentages aren't even close to among the better ones in the country.
He's just not as good as some think.
Sippin' Mick Moniker Maker
He shoots 3's and mid range shots, of course he is not going to have a high shooting percentage like guys that only shoot bunnies. He has TONS more good games than bad ones. Even the great ones don't score all the time. Vaughn scores more frequently than you do with the ladies va jay jay.
SUckin Sean Miller Lite
Hey Bill - how does that RPI stuff work? UC is 88 now in realtimerpi.com - but that doesn't make sense.
Any info on how it works?
IU fans were calling for Davis's head for not landing Vaughn. It does say something for UC to get him.
Can Oscar still play? We may want to suit him up for the next game.
I love all the negative "little sisters of poor x" posters on here. Little brother has one good year and suddenly they over run x's student paper's (Enquirer) Blog. If you want good discussion go to NCAABBS or Bearcatnews.com
2007: Cincinnati finishes 11-19 overall, 2-14 in the BIG EAST Conference under first-year coach Mick Cronin. No tournament
2008: Cincinnati finishes about 500. Maybe a bogus new alphabet tournament bid.
UC has made progress in its 5 year rebuilding program. 2009 may lead to an NIT bid. 2010 may lead to an NCAA bid. Good times are here again before you know it. Just wait 2-3 more years.
See ya in 2010+.
"Pretty good company to be associated with at the end of your career - assuming he keeps it up and stays injury free."
I don't think anyone will ever compare to Oscar. Nearly 1000 pts/season, just think about that(plus all the rebounds). No one is in the same company with Oscar.
I wouldn't quite put Vaughn with the same company as Logan, even if he outscores him. Logan had a way of willing the team to win. If Vaughn can develop that the next two season, then we can talk about putting him with Logan. Putting up points is great, but winning games is why they play.
After this year's tremendous UC BB success is it time to raise BB ticket prices for next year?
I am looking for an update on Alvin Mitchell. Bill? Anyone? Anyone?
Once again, due to the marvelous "moderation" delay, it is taking hours to see our comments. Yes, hours. And, the saddest part of it all is the fact that "moderation" was likely started at the bidding of a very few outspoken crybabies.
Vaughn's shooting 45% from the field and 40% from 3. Those are both very, very good percentages for a perimeter player. You don't seem to know what you're talking about.
For instance, ND's McAlarney is at 43% from the field and 45% from 3
UConn's AJ Price is 44% and 38%
Marq's Dominic James is 42% and 33%
Nova's Scotty Reynolds is 40% and 35%
Cuse's Johnny Flynn is 45% and 35%
IU's Eric Gordon is 45% and 37%
MSU's Drew Neitzel is 41% and 40%
UT's D.J. Augustine is 44% and 35%
XU's Drew Lavender is 44% and 40%
Zona's Jared Bayless is 47% and 42%
Tenn's Chris Lofton is 40% and 39%
Tenn's JaJuan Smith is 44% and 37%
Memphis' Derrick Rose is 47% and 33%
Vaughn is about equal or better than all of them.
Deonta's scored in double figures in 24 of the 28 games this year. He's scored 15+ ponts in 17 games, 20+ points in 9 games, 30+ in 2 games this year.
He's also scored a higher percentage of his team's points than ANY OTHER PLAYER IN THE BIG EAST. For you to say he's not carrying the team is laughable. He's carrying the offense more than any other player in the league.
I'm all for criticism when it's deserved, but, Moniker Maker, you're so over the top. You are just absolutely wrong on this point. I won't wait for an intelligent response . . .
JT...
He's a Big East First Teamer.....
I dont think you can be in that conversation if you aren't good
You seem like the typical "focus on the negative" type of guy... I'm sure your life is really boring and a "clunker"
Deonta is THE reason we quadrupled our Big East win total from last season.
Do these commenters even WATCH THE GAMES?
Anon 9:27,
Almost on the bulleye!
But it's "See ya in 2010+ and with a new coach!
Sportsmania,
Logan also got to play with Kenyon, Mickeal, McElroy, and many other good players throughout his career. Not taking anything away from Logan but just saying that Vaughn has had to do it with A LOT less. Vaughn will score a whole lot more next year with Gates down low and Cash and Davis running the PG.
Vaughn doesn't carry the team offensively. If he did, they'd manage to end up with more than 50 or 60 points more often, even with the lack of talent offensively overall. This team seems to score around 50-60 points OFTEN. Vaughn has too many 10-15 PPG type performances to be a truly "great" player.
Duke's long-range shooters are the more consistent performers that Vaughn should strive to be but probably won't.

"But it's "See ya in 2010+ and with a new coach!"
Yeah right, one of the top 3 coaches- if not the Big East coach of the year....Coach Mick has his team playing WELL-- well ahead of schedule.
Why not enjoy your Muskie Moment and make your ignorant comments on Dustin's blog...Miller Lite will be coaching at IU soon enough. Mick, unlike his predecessor, will leave on his own terms in 25-30 years.
I bet everybody is all fired up for the DePaul game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have to go with DePaul, and red hot Draelon Burns. Then have to go with Uconn over UC which gives UC a 13-17 final record. UC will lose their first game in NYC and then the record is 13-18. Now how is that an improvement of last year? I really thought UC was going to win 17-18 games this year but a OOC 4-7 record and having the Bearcats quit after the Pitt loss will seal their fate.
More moderation please!
They would have won 17-20 games if they didn't have the injury to Warren and Williams didn't go down two weeks before the season.
They WILL win at least 20 games next year.
I find the conviction some hold when saying UC WOULD have won 17-20 games with Williams and Warren around all year as very disputable.
Williams has not had much Division I success so far in his career. To INSIST the team would have won a certain number of games doesn't seem to make sense.
Sippin' Mick Moniker Maker
Well they would have beaten BGSU, Belmont Illinois State and possibly X if they had Warren healthy.
Imagine if we had Williams in the majority of the time instead of Adam H.
Didn't they lost to Belmont and Illinois State by double-digits?
I'm not sure how we can count on Warren/Williams providing enough to overcome such deficits.
Neither has done enough consistently at the Division I level to infer such a belief.
Sippin' Mick Moniker Maker
Deonta Vaughn is 1st team all Big East. Will Be announced tomorrow.
