Quarterback derby

The next 10 days could be crucial for several of UC’s quarterbacks. With five quarterbavcks taking snaps and two more coming in as freshman in the fall, Kelly realizes that some changes will have to be made that position.

“We just can’t field all those quarterbacks,” Kelly said. “So there may be some tough decisions that have to be made relative to the position that they’re playing, whether they have a chance to play the position here or whether it’s better that they’re somewhere else. Not to kick anybody off the team, we’ve got great kids. But the reality is it’s a competitive situation. They’re on scholarship and not everybody can play. I don’t think we’re going to be able to go through the spring and say status quo. There’s going to have to be some changes there.

Lately, Kelly has talked about how happy he has been with the progress being made by Notre Dame transfer Demetrius Jones and redshirt freshman Chazz Anderson. And senior Dustin Grutza, because of his experience and value as a backup and even a possible starter, will not be moved.

That leaves redshirt freshman Zach Collaros and junior Tony Pike as the quarteracks on the bubble. That could change, though, as the final week of spring practice unfolds.

How BK handles Pike and Collaros will provide insights into how fairly BK deals with individuals who have committed to his program.

Pike had multiple years to win a backup or starting job. He has not succeeded. Collaros was redshirted. Has Collaros improved since he arrived at UC? Has he gotten a fair shot to develop?

If someone needs to leave, it would be great if the player decides its in their best interest to transfer. I don't like to think someone on scholarship would lose their scholarship if they put 100% effort into the program.

It'll be intersting....

I realize that this is no longer a basketball school, but did the recruits sign?

Let me ask this question. I don't mean this as an insult, but as a serious question... is there another possition that Tony Pike can even play? With his body type and speed isn't he pretty much a quarterback and nothing else? Collaros can at least play on defense.

Great story. I appreciate the stories on the UC sports programs.

Has Ben Mauk's appeal been officially denied yet? Don't remember ever hearing.

Ben Mauk is still waiting to hear about his appeal. The NCAA apparently has other first-time appeals ahead of him and is waiting to clear those up before considering Mauk's. As for Tony Pike and another position, that's an interesting question. I don't know the answer to it. I also don't know for sure if he'll need to find another position. Brian Kelly hasn't said that he's not happy with Pike, but he hasn't talked much about him lately, at least not as much as he has talked about Jones and Chazz Anderson

I don't think there's any problem with the 3 basketball recruits signing. UC can't announce the signings and Mick Cronin can't talk publicly about them until he has the letters-of-intent in hand. It sometimes takes a few days for that process to play itself out.

Ken Anderson proved that a great q-back at a little school (Augustana?) can get attention.

Better to play than to sit the bench, imho.

If a kid has actual prospects at another position, then I'd say go for it. Otherwise, I'd ask for a transfer if I weren't one of the top 3.....

Who was the last 3rd string q-back you know of who was drafted pro?
