Mauk's impact
The editor of one of the college football preview magazines that I do the UC preview for told me the other day that his magazine had UC picked to finish fifth in the Big East, but that they were prepared to move the Bearcats up higher if Ben Mauk were able to return. Now that it appears that Mauk won’t be UC’s quarterback next season, I presume they’ll still be fifth, which seems a little low to me, even without Mauk. What do you think? Where do you think UC would finish with Mauk running the show and without him running the show?

With Mauk at QB this team could win the Big East... without him I believe they could COMPETE for a Big East title... either way I don't see this team finishing 5th in the conference... 3rd at worst, imo...
They lost a lot of key people on offense and defense other than Mauk. So I would say they could be 5th or worse.
With or without Mauk, third in the Big East at the very worst.
I'd say fifth in conference is about right with or without Mauck. They lost way too much of their core on both sides of the ball. Kelly has his work cut out for him this year.
UC has a very good shot at winning the Big East. The Bearcats lost 3 games by single digits. For some reason, and including last year, the so called experts picked UC to finish 5th. There is still a media love affair with Rutgers, Ville, Pitt, UConn, and especially S. Florida.
UC can win the Big East, with or without Mauk, as well they could finish 5th. It is wide open. However the "experts" love S. Florida, Pitt, and even Louisville. I don't think WVU or UConn will be as good as they were last year. UC finished last year tied for second and they have alot of starters back........I give UC 50% odds of winning the Big East.
Glad that BK prepared during Spring without Mauk expected to play. With Grutza, 5th seems about right. If anderson or jones steps up (or Mauk is ruled eligible) and makes plays, UC can compete for BE title. Tough road games this year. 2nd game of year should determine where UC stands.
Without Ben Mauk: this team "could" be good enough to compete for a Big East Championship, but likely would be in the 3-5 range. The "if" factor is Demetrius Jones or Chazz Anderson. Gruza is serviceable but not star quality. If Jones or Anderson turn out to be really good, then we might surprise a bunch of folks.
WITH Ben Mauk I believe that not only could we win the Big East, but we would have to be considered amongst the second tier of candidates who might play for the National Championship.
The folks who are claiming we have been stripped bare HAVE NOT been paying enough attention to the players we have coming back. Yes, some good kids graduated, but we are looking really strong on both sides of the ball.
Bearcats can win the Big East either way. the biggest advantage i see with Mauk is i think he'd be most ready the second week of the season when we travel to Oklahoma.
Word has it that receiver Josh Jones of Elder has verballed to attend UC. The outlook for Football is looking brighter all the time. If it weren't for the pigskin though, we might be a Dance Team school today. Can't wait for FB season to begin. Just hope one or more of the QBs rises to the top of the pack and the O-line to improve. If those things happen, this team will be a force!
I don't think the Oklahoma game will be a good measure of where this team will be by the end of the year.
Especially if we decise to play one of the young quarterbacks.
My guess is if we do, it will be a long day for UC offensively.
Oklahoma is the best team on the schedule this year the 'Cats face except perhaps WVU.
So if we play one of the young QBs Oklahoma will be a learning experience... perhaps a tough one that will pay off once we get into the BE season.
I think they underestimate BK and the other QBs.
I hope I'm wrong but I think Brian Kelly is overrated and with Dantonio's seniors gone, they will be exposed this year. I'm anticipating a .500 season.
Well, you're entitled to your own opinion. However, just as how your alias says a lot about how much I should value what you have to say, so does Brian Kelly's past history of turning around a horrible D1 Central Michigan program and building a force to be reckoned with as well as winning national titles at the D2 level.
Why troll the blogs of a school you're obviously not a supporter of?
evryone sites the loss of UC players from last year (including Mauk) ... but it seems to me that Rutgers / WV / Louisville / USF all suffered comparable losses. Pitt is the only team , in my opinion, that lost less that UC did
How is Grutza just "servicable" and not "star quality" when he has won the Big East Offensive player of the week on multiple occasions? Grutza can and will take the Cats to Big East championship.
It's just my opinion tony so don't get all bent out of shape. I hope it is wrong and I was wrong once before. I just think Kelly is more wind than substance and was riding the coattails of Dantonio's effort. Why is that such a stretch? What Dantonio did here in a short period of time was very impressive.
For your information, I do and have supported UC football, all the way back to the Tony Mason years which I am sure is longer than you can claim.
