College vs. the NBA
While the team flew home last night after the loss to Georgetown, I had stay another night and flew home today. Actually, I shouldn't say I "had" to stay another night in Washington. It's a great town.
I haven't seen an NBA game in person for a long time so after I finished working, I had dinner and then returned to the Verizon Center to watch the Wizards play the Charlotte Bobcats. I know that's a bad matchup. The Wizards struggle without injured Gilbert Arenas and the Bobcats are the Bobcats. Still, it's an NBA game.
I'm not one of those to disparage the NBA because they don't play defense. I actually think they do play defense, but the offensive skills of the players are at such a high level that sometimes it doesn' t matter. Most of the players, even players on mid-level teams like this are extremely talented or they wouldn't be in the league.
I enjoyed watching those players show their stuff. Obviously, they're a lot more talented than the players I watch in college on a regular basis, even in the Big East.
But I still find the college game to be more entertaining. I think it's because players compete with more passion than you find in a long NBA season. Most college basketball players are still trying to get to the pro level or to win for their school or their city. They haven't arrived yet, like the NBA players. There's more of a sense that every game means something. Until the playoffs arrive, I don't see that in the NBA on a consistent basis.

At college level and above, BB players play BB year round, whether its a game or practice. College BB players struggle to "show up" each game just as NBA players struggle.
Agree Bill. I think the lack of enthusiasm from the crowd makes an NBA game in person kind of boring. Went to my first one last year at Indiana against Denver and there were too many lulls. Found my mind wandering during the action. The crowd, the pep band, the intesinity of the players and coaches make the college game more entertaining, especially in person.
I grew up a Celtic fan in the 60's and love the NBA but you are right, the lack of passion makes the regular season a bit of a bore. IMO they need to reduce the number of playoff teams. The skill level of the players is so far above the college game but it is offset by the lack of passion. I also think Stern made a major mistake by emphasizing players vs team. Baseball and Football are great because we identify with teams not individual players.
I'd like to see the NBA go to international rules.
Its all about the passion of the game. Cut the NBA season by 20 games and it would be MUCH better.
I can't stomach watching an NBA game. People here at Ohio U try to say its because we don't have a team in Cincy. I know that has some to do with it but I just don't find the games entertaining. When the fans who attend the games aren't excited, you know there is an issue.
Did you run out of "UC: NCAA At-Large?" & "Mick: Big East Coach of the Year" posts? How about a nice heartwarming story about Adam H?
Can't wait to see what other filler starts getting posted here! It's going to be a very, very long offseason for Cats fans.
Bill,
Couldn't agree more.
The skill level of players in the NBA is incredible, but college basketball is much more fun and interesting. I find high school basketball the same way.
Why? As jake2bake4 said, "It's all about the passion of the game". Also, with players who are undeniably good but not as polished, fans can never feel secure or comfortable about what's going to happen. That's part of the fun of amateur athletics.
I catch NBA fever when it's a playoff game with 2 minutes to go. Then the fever goes away.
I heard a comment from an announcer the other day that the NBA has a college season of games remaining. (about 30) When you consider the NBA starts in October and does not end until the middle of June, the players and fans have to pace themselves for the long haul.
I agree with you Bill. The NBA players can flat out score from all over the place, and the rules are designed to allow the offense to flow. Hard to take a charge in the NBA. They also play 80 some games. The finals are in June.
agreed - sometimes the players look less than half interested in doing their job.
long season but big bucks for them - you can see their motivation is lacking a lot.
college - the crowd makes a difference and the players work their tail off.
how much is a wizards ticket?
Bill,
Thank you so much for reminding me of the reasons why I avoid the NBA like the plague. It's so B-O-R-I-N-G that I'd rather watch American Idol...By the way, I don't.
Were you there hoping to catch a glimpse of Ron Allen? Who wouldn't? Next year, we'll all be hoping to spot Adam H. He's already been a pro in Europe, right?

Here is some more mediocrity fodder

And while UC fans haven't historically nicknamed senior classes, perhaps this would be a good time to start.
"I've thought long and hard about it," Coach Cronin said. "For me, they've been "The Saviors." I don't know where we would be without them. They really have saved the day for us. For those people who can't understand our struggles, all I can say is that everybody in college basketball predicted our fate to be a whole lot worse than it's been. It's because of the senior class and the job they've done in fighting so hard to get us back to respectability. "The Saviors" is what I've come up with.
it's sure been a treat to see maxielle doing well with the pistons. he's equipped with a nice short jumper and really plays like a bearcat out there.
atleast that's something no xavier fan could deny and all of my uc bretheren can raise their glasses to.
You guys don't find the NBA boring because you guys don't have a team...Are you guys paying attention to what is at stake in the West? 10 teams are seperated by only five games. Every game is basically a playoff game now
After watching last night's Texas/K-State game, Bill, it was clear to me they need to move the 3 point line back to NBA distance. Changing it to 20-9 is still too close. Texas was nearly 50% on their 3 pointers.
To balance out, 3 pointers need to be about a 33% proposition, while 2 pointers are in the 50% range.
The current 19-9 is just a giant step, for most of these guys, farther than a free throw.
