Jerry Palm's assessment of UC's NCAA hopes
Here's what Jerry Palm of CollegeRPI.com says about UC's chances for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament:
"They're not far enough along," Palm said. "If the bracket were today, they'd be done. That doesn't mean they can't play their way into it. The committee will consider their injury situation. They always do. If Cincinnati puts up three or four more wins, it could definitely happen, but they're not even on my radar yet. When I'm doing brackets, they're not a team I'm looking at."
Of course, that's what Mick Cronin is saying, that if UC finishes strong, it should be considered. But the Bearcats probably have to win four of their last five to even have a chance. Either that or they'll have to go to the final of the Big East tournament. And even that might not be enough.
The good news is that with road games at Georgetown, Pitt and UConn, the opportunity is there to make a statement on the road against quality teams.
"If they're as good as they think they are, they definitely have a chance," Palm said.
But not a good one. Palm points out that since 1994 when he started tracking these things only three teams have received at-large berths at four games over .500 and only one - 16-14 Georgia in 2001 - has ever been invited with a record less than four games over.

"The good news is that they have road games at Uconn, Pitt and Gtown". Just what would bad news be?
What a wonderful thing that 'moderation' is! Many, if not all, pro-moderation comments are being seen on the board. Yet, many people, myself included are anti-moderation and have made comments that did NOT get posted. Where are all of the comments that show that a number of us are not happy with 'moderation' and are voicing the opposing view? Isn't this one of the cornerstones that America was founded upon? Isn't this what the ACLU and others have long support and fought to preserve?
10:35,
Thanks, I needed that.
This blog gets better all the time.
Mick is just using psychology. He figures that arguing loud and long about NCAA eligibility makes it look like NIT eligibility is a given.
Didn't anyone else see the S Florida and the Rutgers games? I'm really sorry guys but this team is not an NCAA tournament team. However, Mick's comments did give me a good chuckle yesterday.
CSA, I agree that the South Florida game was atrocious, but the Rutgers game really wasn't. And, If Vaughn's game would have been on, it would have been a blowout. With the teams having automatic bids getting in the tournament by winning grade school tournaments, almost any school has a NCAA calibre team. The saddest part is these automatic berths given to even sub mid-major teams keeps some deserving teams out. Let's do away with the automatic berths and have the best 64 teams in the Big Dance. I know that this method would keep the Cats out of the NCAA this year, but it still would give the BEST 64 teams a shot at the title. The way it is now, sub mid-major teams with absolutely NO CHANCE are taking slots away from teams with some chance of advancing and even a slim chance of winning, especially with the parity we see in college BB today.
UC has entered the conversation of entering the conversation to be a bubble team. this is the first half-step of becoming a tournament team. A win @ Gtown would put them in the conversation. Lets debate this- If UC gets to 17-13 are they more/less deserving than OSU who will be lucky to get to 19-12??? just food for thought.
I will be leaving tonight for DC, go Cats! Upset special baby!
the very thought that palm is even talking about UC is meaning that their getting closer go cats!
Attendance at 5/3 has to get better to be considered for a tourney by the money makers called the NCAA or NIT.
Anon 11:04,
One way or another, all good blog sites are moderated. Without moderation the blog turns into a free-for-all chat room. The best posts on this blog are by Bill who researches the Bearcats for a living and his posts were diluted by postings that were a waste of bandwidth. Furthermore, you can start you own blog if you want freedom of speech. It is easy, but we probably won't go there.
CSA admitted that he had a hard time staying awake during the USF game and probably did not see any of the USF v UCONN game. USF almost beat UCONN just like they almost beat UC. I watched both. USF is going to upset somebody.
Hey CSA what about ND leaving Rutgers with a 3 point win? What about UConn beating USF by 2 points?
There are no easy games in the BEast, this is not CUSA or the A10.
CSA Duke just lost to Miami, not the powerhouse in Oxford, the basketball school, I mean football school in Florida. I guess that they aren't tourney worthy. They also lost to Wake, wow, no tourney for them.
UC would be lucky to be in the NIT. I've never heard so many people predict wins for a team that is barely floating over .500 and played terrible against two of the worst teams in the conference. They can lose to Depaul and Providence as easy as they can beat them...they can easily be under .500 by Wednesday night. Remember if they go 2-3 the rest of the way (which is very likely) they would still need to win a tournament game just to be eligible for the NIT...so the NCAA shouldn't be in the discussion at all right now.
Bearcat in Atlanta,
It is not the fact that the site is being moderated that is an issue with me. If you would just learn to read, it is the lack of allowing the opposing viewpoint to be heard that was being bemoaned. As far as starting my own blog, this one will more than suffice. If I did though, you and the other narrow-minded thinkers would not be missed.

This is a joke, right? An early April Fool's Day prank?
UC won't make the NIT let alone the NCAA tourney! UK has a much better shot to make the NCAA as an at-large team. UC fans must be delusional.
anon 1:36-
Is projecting wins worse than presenting misinformed facts...There is no stipulation for a team to be .500 to get in the NIT. Is it unlikely yes, but it is also unlikely for a team to be over .500 in a major conference without having a .500 overall record.
If Mick thought the Cats had any REAL chance of going to the NCAA this year, I seriously doubt that he would have expressed any interest in that new 'petite dance' tournament aloud. The lowest any UC team should ever go, even in these rebuilding years after the devastation, is the 'little dance' NIT. And only because of the circumstances is that not an embarrassment in itself. All things considered though, this season the NIT is acceptable and almost, desired. After this year, hopefully never. And the new 'petite dance' and UC should never be spoken in the same breath!
Kentucky .5608 14-10 18 Cincinnati .5608 13-12 7
RPI is identical...
Schedules considered UC and UK have identical opportunities to make the tourney with a strong finish.
I would also argue that UC remaining schedule provides even more opportunity than UK to get in the tournament.
By the way Joe Lunardi has UC and UK the 10th and 11th teams left out of the dance.
There's no such thing as a bad win. There's no such thing as a good loss.
There are no style points in the RPI. It's who you beat and where you beat them. Not by how much.
This team may or may not make the NCAA tournament. The fact is that it is possible, and I would have never thought that after the terrible November and December they had.
Would you want to be a higher-rated seed playing Cincinnati in round 1? I wouldn't.
Why are we even discussing UC and the NCAA this year. As much as I love the Bearcats, it's simply not going to happen. The more we think and talk about it, the more we are setting ourselves up for a letdown. It's probably the NIT this year and hopefully next year begins a loooooong stretch of successive and successful appearances in the Big Dance!
Anon 3:02, I think the 'Cats chances of the NCAA are remote. But the fact that we even have a remote chance to make the Tournament is exciting, epecially with the season-ending injury to MWilliams, the injury to Warren that kept him out of 6 games, and our record going into Big East play. This team has done a remarkable job of turning their season around, and Mick is likely going to be the Big East Coach of the Year as a result.
Anon 11:04, if you don't like the moderation on the blog, don't post. It's Bill's blog, and his/the Enquirer's rules. If you don't like the rules, dost post her and don't read here.
How do you keep a 12-13 team motivated as league schedule is near ending?
Play hard and up to your abilities and we might still get into NCAA MC tells his players. You never know. Good psychology Mick.
If Bearcats win 4 of last 5 league games and go 2-1 in BE tourney then just maybe they have a chance for at large bid.
I like moderation - less trash talk that contributes nothing to the conversation
If you look at Dow's blog you'll see that all the nonsensical posts stopped when username was required.
11:04 - Check w. the ACLU maybe they can help you get moderation removed.
Anon 11:04,
I guess you're right, I can't read. What are you opposed to? Moderation? If you can't express yourself without insults then your point of view will not be heard on most blogs. This site had turned into a free for all and it could not stay that way. It was only a matter of time.
Ahhh...well, that's it for this season. Even the Not-In-Tournament looks out of reach.
Well it sure looks like Jerry Palm knows what he's talking about...even if Mick doesn't.
UC is a sit at home team tourney time. The Victory Parkway school will be NCAA dancing. So much for the big school bull about huge endowments.
