Marcus Sikes' role

You need look no further than Marcus Sikes to gauge the improvement this year in the UC basketball team. Last year, when Sikes was pressed into service as a center after Adam Hrycaniuk and Hernol Hall were declared ineligible by the NCAA, Sikes averaged 29.2 minutes per game, with 9.5 points and 5.0 rebounds. This year, his minutes are down to 15.8 per game and he’s averaging 3.4 points and 3.3 rebounds. And he’s no longer being forced to guard opposiong post players.

"He's become a role player," Mick Cronin said, "which is probablywhat his talent dictates playing at the highest level in the Big East. Marcus struggles shooting the ball and he doesn't have great athleticism. "He's tried to help us in any way he can, which I think embodies our team’s attitude this year, but there’s obviously a lesser role for him. There's a reason why we’re better. It's because we're not playing a 6-6 guy (actually Sikes is listed at 6-8) at center who’s not very athletic. We’re using him in the role he needs to be in coming off the bench."

Sikes is a backup roll player to the roll player Adam H. Ouch!

Same old stuff. Sikes can't play, Gentry can't play and the H-bomb can't play. No offense to the the kids, I am sure that they give their best. Why sugar-coat everything? This is still a bad team and the freshmen class really does not show me a whole lot to get excited about for next season.

Since you are only supposed to say nice things about the Bearcats on this blog: Vaughn is an exceptional player.

The numbers certainly reflect the change in roles... 0.22 average points per minute vs. 0.33 last year... 0.21 average rebounds per minute vs. 0.17 last year. Role players like him are typically called upon for rebounding and defense, and without the full-time Big East pounding he was getting last year, and with a little more size around him in the line up when he's in the game, he's able to be a little more productive on the boards and not have to try to score so much.

This is still an average team, but role players who understand and accept their roles make any team a little better. We're still 2-3 years away, minimum, from competing for a regular season conference title, but with guys who play within their roles and one or two blue-chippers we should get there. 10-8 in the conference is probably the most they can hope for at this point, and that would put them in the conference tournament. They've done well considering what they have to work with.

Are they still playing basketball over at UC?

It's tough playing Div. 1-A ball with a not quite Div. 1-A team, especially in one of the better conferences. Hopefully, Yates and Wright will be more ready to compete than this freshman class has been. That's not a knock on them. There are some standout freshmen across the land, but most are not quite ready for prime time. Hence, UC's situation. Vaughn needs more support offensively, inside and outside to reach his potential.

I hope Micks wife never asks him if a certain dress makes her look fat.

Love to hear his response.

3:25, are they still playing FOOTBALL at little sister 'x'?? Enjoy your short little ride in BB at your dinky little mid-major school. Don't mention to Sean Miller I said that. He does become rather out of sorts about being simply mid-major. I suppose the truth hurts, but that's how the BB world views it.

Bill,

Did you ask Mick about my concerns regarding the team’s offense next year?? You talked to him and it doesn't sound like it unless you are holding back.

2:41, that's why next year the Cats will be better. There's only one direction to go.

4:01, you'll have to excuse Bill. No one informed him that his editor would be giving him his writing assignments anonymously via his blog.

4:01 -

What the flip makes you think that Bill or Mick would give a d@** about your question? Gotta love how people like to make themselves feel more important than they are.

I thought Sikes would play better if he did not have to play center. He backs up Williamson at PF this year. He shot some threes last year. At PF I thought he might make more shots from outside, but I was wrong. He made 40% of his threes last year and is only making 22% this year.

Bill, near the end of year it would be interesting to ask Sikes, Gentry, and Williamson if they wish they had signed with a school that they could have started and played BB.

A better question would be: What will it be like next season without them and Adam H. to carry on the fine tradition that the BOT and Nancy have started?

Hey 4:01. Why don't you call Mick's show tonight and ask your own lame questions?

at 6:37 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

6:34, Good idea. I suggested yesterday that he ask Sippin' the stupid questions himself, but apparently the idea was too complicated.

The Huggie-lovers, Nancy/Mick haters are sooooo Cincinnati.

Must be the crappy degree?!

7:34, Upset because you got passed over for a starring role in Brokeback Mountain?!

Legit questions are apparently "lame" to same around here. The team appears to have little offensive talent in the near future unless something drastic changes yet Mick can't even be questioned I suppose. He wouldn't answer the question over a show. I can almost guarantee that.

Whatever. I guess we can just enjoy another 65 points per game team next year. "ZZZ" material to say the least.

UC = UNLV East

...Or maybe not - UNLV has cleaned up its act, has a winning record, & has made the NCAA tourney last year.

OK, let's play the game. Will the REAL Cheviot Sports Authority please stand up????

You can't spell sUCk without UC.

Of course, if you went to s-UC-k, you can't read anyway.

We own your little sister of a school. Good luck in the NIT - next year.

UC remains Thug U. It's a ghetto school with ghetto athletes.

Guess it wasn't Bob's fault after all that UC's reputation is in the crapper. Hear that, Nancy?
