Thoughts on Mike Thomas

Mike Thomas alienated a lot of people when he took over as the UC athletic director in 2005. Part of the reason was that he didn’t have the folksy personality of his predecessor, Bob Goin. To add to his problems, he was hired by Nancy Zimpher, which was a strike against him from the outset in the eyes of many UC fans. He then turned over much of the athletic department staff and was criticized for hiring Mick Cronin to coach the basketball team instead of fan favorite Andy Kennedy. We’ll never know what kind of job Kennedy would have done if he had stayed, but it’s clear that Cronin has the program on the right track in a very short period of time. Thomas also deserves credit for hiring Brian Kelly to coach the football program, for helping to sell out Nippert Stadium three times last fall and for acting to sign Kelly to a five-year contract extension.

He still has much work to do, though. In an era of financial belt tightening at UC, he has to find the money to pay for the practice fields and indoor bubble that are part of Kelly’s new contract, even while Varsity Village hasn’t been totally paid for. Further down the road, he must decide how to enlarge Nippert Stadium to squeeze more revenue out of it and improve or replace Fifth Third Arena. If Goin was judged on getting UC into the Big East and getting Varsity Village built, Thomas’ legacy at UC could very well be tied to what happens with Nippert Stadium and Fifth Third Arena.

Bill,

Just love how you state opinion as though fact. Case in point: "it’s clear that Cronin has the program on the right track in a very short period of time."

While that may very well be the case, only time will tell. If you are interested enough to take the time to read the blog that you may have been obliged to oversee, you would have seen that a number of bloggers do not necessarily share that opinion.

Unfortunately, many of the bloggers on this site are idiots and have no idea what it takes to succeed in Division 1 college athletics. They automatically smash Cronin because he is not Huggs and of course overlook the fact that experts feel Mick is doing a great job - Huggins, Pitino, Boeheim, Dixon, and Wright (you can even add Calhoun - who thinks Cronin will be coach of the year in the Big East).
As for Mike Thomas, his early resume looks great! I have to admit I was a doubter, but Brian Kelly, Mick Cronin, and three sell-outs at Nippert are huge. If he continues at his pace, he will definitely improve the football facilities and the Shoe will be rejuvinated - hopefully by then most of the negative personalities will have jumped back on the bandwagon (or moved to Morgantown).

Bill,

I could not agree more about the program being on the right track. That is not to say all is perfect in Clifton but despite the few morons who spew hate on this blog, the trend is quite good. Going from one big east win to most likely between 8 and 9 wins is solid. Now next year if they regress I would change my opinion.

The fact that Thomas at his introductory press conference started extolling the virtues of UC21 like Nancy's parrot didn't help his image either.

at 2:49 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

When has being AD at UC ever been an easy job?

Based on the partial results of Thomas being on the job just over two years, you would have to say he's doing a very good job. Both of the major coaching hires he's made look to be outstanding. I recall the critical story the Enquirer wrote about UC football, focusing on fan support and recruiting, last June, and right on cue, they have made tremendous progress in both areas in the time since.

As a longtime UC fan, I feel like both major revenue sports are taking advantage of being on the big stage and are on track to give us the best overall athletic success we've ever enjoyed as a university.

If Mike Thomas has been able to accomplish this with Z here, we can only guess what might be accomplished with her gone! Oh well, I can dream, can't I?

big picture here -

Goin moved UC into Big East, got Varsity village.

MT is working on Nippert expansion and Shoemaker renovation/replacement.

Overall performance = C.

Too soon to tell what his hires have done yet. Reports are he has some truthfulness issues - and his hires in basketball (mens and womens) and football have all been white males.

See how he handles fund raising - but he is doing a lot less big project work than Goin did.

at 3:26 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

3:11 you are an idiot. Who cares if they are all white males? He got who he thought was the best coach for the position. What female or non white male that was available last December would you rather have coaching the football team now? What about basketball. what minority candidate would you rather have that was available at the time Cronin was hired and wanted to come here?

Those hires were driven by one thing only. Finding the best coach that wanted to come to UC at that time. WIll they end up great coaches and great hires. Time will tell. They are on their way. BK was easily the best choice and I cant imagine a better fit for UC at the stage the program was other than Kennedy or Cronin.

It is comical that any poster who disagrees with another is called an idiot, stupid, moron etc. The name callers are exactly what they call others. How can you call someelse else an idiot while having a blog war with that person.

If someone is an idiot then why have the E conversation with them?
Arguing with an idiot is idiotic.
This is axiomatic.

Is the BBall program on the right track? Well define right track. UC is 10-12 with much more talent than last year. IMHO UC has underachieved this year, especially early in the year. If UC finishes at or above .500 that is the "right track" to me.

Football is looking solid, good program, good coach, good BCS league. UC finished ranked #17, won their bowl game etc. Expanding Nippert is fine if you make the expansion at least 15,000 seats.

If Nippert is not expanded that is not a big deal to me.

Anyone who does not agree with me is an idiot, LMAO.

Mike Thomas hired Brian Kelly. If he can keep him year for a least 5 years and the football team continues in direction that Kelly has it going, then I will give Mike Thomas credit. Until then he, Sippin Mick and the Z dog should all go to Ohio State.

Red, what makes you think that OSU would want them? OSU may believe that they are much better off having that bunch at UC.

don't forget the $50,000 MT gave to Eastman and Beaudine Inc. for getting him the UC job.

Quid pro quo

And they are raising UCATS rates, limiting ticket purchases by big donors, and constantly crying for money.

BK was a great hire. MC will take 3-5 years to rebuild what andy kennedy would rebuild in 1-2 years. So Billy, if you accept throwing away 2-3 years of BB on MC's development, then you probably are happy.

We bandwagon fans hate that Z and MT tossed out 2-3 years of competitive UC Basketball. Hiring Andy Kennedy would have avoided this error.

at 6:04 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let's see:
1. 60 points higher in the RPI than they were a year ago at this time.

2. Wins over 2 ranked teams.

3. Three additional wins in the Big East than a year ago with eight to play.

That's called "improvement", which is considered "headed in the right direction" by anyone who has the best interest of the program at heart. But then, that isn't everyone posting here is it?

at 6:09 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

If I were Mike Thomas I'd be on the first train out with comments like these. By all accounts UC athletics is much improved in the last two years.

at 6:23 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

6:04 Higher in the RPI this year? Wow, there was ONLY one direction to go! It's not easy having a coach who is learning OJT.

at 7:02 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thomas may find a way to add some seats to Nippert, but we're stuck with Shoemaker Center for another 15-20 years. Whoever designed that dump did a great disservice to Bearcat fans.

at 7:31 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

With the basketball program that they have now, they should consider playing at the Cincinnati Gardens.

at 7:35 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

CSA, I'm surprised that you didn't suggest one of the smaller local high schools.

at 7:44 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I saw Oscar play many a game at the Gardens along with Jack Twyman and Jerry Lucas. So, I guess you are right, this UC basketball program would be much better suited to maybe a gym at say (no offense to Taylor) Taylor High School.

Now I have wasted enough time at this for tonight, so fire away, I am done for the day.

6:04 Higher in the RPI this year? Wow, there was ONLY one direction to go! It's not easy having a coach who is learning OJT.

Actually genius, that's nothing close to the truth. They could have DROPPED nearly 200 points in the RPI, but they didn't, they've gone UP. It's improvement, but clearly you don't want to admit it because it subverts your childish agenda.

No question that MT is doing a great job.

For you clowns who think it is alright for you to defend NaZi, but it is UnAmerican/UnCincinnati to criticze her performance, why don't you go drink your latte with a straw and let people who really have a grasp upon reality comment on the big issues.

In other words, go pound sand!

Here's the worst thing about Mike Thomas:

If it's true that he gave Andy Kennedy a choice between renouncing Bob Huggins or coaching UC, then I have no respect for the man.

That's a despicable -- maybe evil -- thing to ask a man to do to his friend.

Kennedy, on the other hand, proved himself an honorable human being. It goes a long way toward explaining why he can accomplish so much with so little.

at 8:30 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:17, The Great Defenders want it both ways. They want to sing the praises of NanZi, the BOT, Mick et. al., but don't want ANY criticism of any of them.

at 8:34 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Danny C., you are the biggest proof of your first comment. Congrats!

at 11:09 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

ucfan -

Let's not go crazy on extolling how "honorable" Andy Kennedy is. He took the Ole Miss job before UC played in the NIT quarters, forcing the Mick announcement (he wore a red and blue tie that game by the way). What would have happened had UC won that game? How honorable would people think him?

Also, I know he could do much recruiting, but he could have tried and could have actually mentored his players in something besides basketball. How does a coach allow his players to just skip classes and tests that make them ineligible?

He put in the minimum effort for UC. Hicks carried that team to success.

at 3:10 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, I always thought AK played that one politically to his best advantage. He had me until I found out about the ineligibility of two players at the end of the season for not going to any classes the entire quarter. None. If that was an example of how AK was going to run his program I wanted no part of him being named coach, and of course, by that time he wasn't. I heard the athletic department kept warning AK about these two for weeks before the end of the season and he did nothing - kept playing them, etc. He was looking out 100% for himself, which is fine, but isn't exactly the most ethical thing, either.

I've gotten to know Mike Thomas and here's what I can see: That guy walked into an impossible situation with us as in Lose/Lose. Nothing he could have done AK's year would have made any of us happy. I have heard excellent explanations of why he did what he did that year, from hiring the search firm to cutting off AK's mic (which, btw, wasn't him exactly, but he took the fall for it publicly, which I now admire). The guy knows what he's doing.

The people he's hired, from the staff to new coaches, I have been EXTREMELY impressed with. The athletic department has done a 180 in terms of personnel. Thomas is basically criticized for not being as outgoing as Goin and being hired by Z, which are just stupid. Folks, the comment above about him leaving because of these kinds of comments make me very uncomfortable. If other schools are going to look at coaches such as BK to hire him away because of his success, those same programs will be looking at the guy who hires well when they have AD openings, as well. And some of you idiots would have him go just because Z hired him. Priceless.

ANON 8:34pm -

What do you mean by your comments? Name for me one coach that could have done a better job than Mick, given the circumstances? All I am saying is lose the blinders and realize that things are going in the right direction. Anyone that knows me knows I was a huge Huggs supporter. However, I am a fan of the program and my alma mater - I can get over something that happened three years ago and actually still be as diehard as ever. Maybe those of us that are in touch with reality and see the success that is to come, need to quit reading the blog - all this has become is a spot for Huggins loyalists to complain. Do us all a favor and move to Manhattan, I mean Morgantown, etc...

at 10:59 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

By the way - I know my last post has nothing to do with Mike Thomas, but I support his work with an approval rating of 100%. He has done an excellent job and the success of our athletic department is evident - on and off the playing field.

Thankfully, this city is witnessing a revival of bearcat fans as evidenced by the ever growing crowds at the shoe, not to mention nippert. The two or three holdouts that post on here are becoming part of an ever shrinking minority of observers.

Bob Goins was a real man. If you called him and left a message he would call you back. He might not agree and he would say why.

Mikey Boy Thomas is a wimp boy to Nancy. He showed his lack of class when he turned off Andy Kennedy's microphone. He said he did not need a consultant to hire a new BB coach. Then Dr. Z told him "Hire a consultant and he did."

Fact: Bob Goin couldn't hold MT's jockstrap. He stood by during the whole Huggins fiasco and did nothing, all to preserve his "legacy" of good will among the fans. He should have manned up and acted like Huggs' boss instead of his whipping boy. Thomas walked over hot coals that whole year bearing us fan's wrath and all he did to deserve such treatment was take the job in the first place.

Goin's ability to work a room allowed him to hide a multitude of management problems - just to name a couple the fact that UCats number of donors did not increase for the last decade, the ZERO marketing efforts, etc. He could build buildings and he gets 100% credit for getting UC into the Big East, no small feat. But his lack of kahunas during the Huggs fiasco was abysmal. And I thought so at the time.

Thomas is doing a great job and I hope we keep him.

Mike thomas...

1.) Told Andy to denounce Huggs, he owuldn't so he didn't hire him

2.) Turned of Andy's mic after a final game

3.) Prior to UCAT sales he told them all that they were going to hire an "established" veteran coach from a well known type school (I like cronin and wanted him when I knew we couldn't get Andy but didn't realize they would be so hypocritcal and hire the guy that helped recruit all the "Thugs" they talk about.. luckily he did. I think he's doing a decent job with what's he's got)

4.) LUCKED into Brian Kelly... doesn't he also get credit for running off Dantonio then? BK is nice guy and all but the jury is out. I saw ALOT of boneheaded calls and he did all that with Dantonie players for the most part)

5.) Said I won't hire a Consultant... then did

6.) Told us he didn't want "Basketball only fans" - Bet he wishes he had them in the seats now

7.) Is riding the coat tails of Bob Goin and Bob Huggins who got us into the Big east... THAT's what got the sellouts. not Mike Thomas.

8.) is a complete YES man to Nancy.

There is nothing I've seen from him that makes him more than average at the most.

I'm glad the Fball team is doing well, and I'm glad we have cronin (if not andy or bob)

But let's not go overboard with the job he is doing, he's average at best.

and i agree, the enquirer is practically run by UC, they are all shills for nancy.

Get out of your navels, deal with it that most of us are moving forward (and not a charter lifetime member of the 'haters club') and get behind TODAY'S teams. Time will tell on all these merits; or lack seen by a few sad posters.

Sometimes it hurts to hear the truth. Wasn't happy about the method, timing with KSU's, oops, WVU's coach, but it sure as shoot has been better than all the abusive talk I got about our 'thug team' and 'that drunk' that was leading it.

Amazing isn't it that those of us who have learned how to deal with what's been dealt to us in life are accused of being apologists because we choose to look at the bigger picture AND facts.

1.) Told Andy to denounce Huggs, he owuldn't so he didn't hire him FALSE

2.) Turned of Andy's mic after a final game TRUE

3.) Prior to UCAT sales he told them all that they were going to hire an "established" veteran coach from a well known type school (I like cronin and wanted him when I knew we couldn't get Andy but didn't realize they would be so hypocritcal and hire the guy that helped recruit all the "Thugs" they talk about.. luckily he did. I think he's doing a decent job with what's he's got) HUH? HE SAID WHAT HE WAS AIMING FOR. SINCE HE HADN'T YET HIRED A COACH I DIDN'T TAKE IT AS A GIVEN. NOBODY FELT TRICKED INTO JOINING UCATS THAT YEAR.

4.) LUCKED into Brian Kelly... doesn't he also get credit for running off Dantonio then? BK is nice guy and all but the jury is out. I saw ALOT of boneheaded calls and he did all that with Dantonie players for the most part)PROVE WHY HE WAS LUCKY AND NOT SKILLED AT ATTAINING BRIAN KELLY, AND PROVE THAT HE 'RAN OFF' DANTONIO, WHO FROM ALL ACCOUNTS HE'S STILL FRIENDS WITH.

5.) Said I won't hire a Consultant... then did TO BE FAIR HE SAID HE WASN'T PLANNING ON HIRING ONE, NOT THAT HE DEFINITIVELY WOULD NOT. THE EXPLANATION WAS THAT AS OTHER OPENINGS CAME UP AND OTHER ADS WERE USING SEARCH FIRMS RIGHT AWAY SO THEY COULD CONTACT COACHES DURING THE SEASON, UC WOULD BE BEHIND THE 8 BALL IF THEY DIDN'T AS WELL. STUPID SYSTEM, BUT IF HE HADN'T HIRED A SEARCH FIRM AT THAT POINT HE WOULD HAVE BEEN AN IDIOT. LOOK, THERE'S NO OTHER REASON HE HE WOULDN'T HAVE TURNED AROUND AND HIRED A SEARCH FIRM AFTER SAYING HE WASN'T UNLESS HE HAD A GOOD REASON. IF IT MEANT HE COULD CONTACT COACHES THROUGH THE SEARCH FIRM YET BEFORE THEIR SEASONS WERE OVER AS THE OTHER SCHOOLS WERE DOING, GOOD MOVE.

6.) Told us he didn't want "Basketball only fans" - Bet he wishes he had them in the seats now BASKETBALL HAS DONE MUCH BETTER THIS YEAR THAN LAST AND I BET THOMAS EXPECTED ATTENDANCE TO BE WHERE IT'S AT THIS YEAR. HE SHOULDN'T WANT BASKETBALL ONLY FANS. NO SCHOOL SHOULD.

7.) Is riding the coat tails of Bob Goin and Bob Huggins who got us into the Big east... THAT's what got the sellouts. not Mike Thomas. SORRY BUT WINNING GOT THE SELLOUTS, AS A RESULT OF HIRING THE RIGHT COACH. BASKETBALL SOLD OUT FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND WE WEREN'T IN THE MIGHTY BIG EAST THEN. GOIN GETS ALL THE CREDIT FOR GETTING US IN, THOUGH, AS WELL AS FOR VARSITY VILLAGE. BUT HE HAD SOME BIG FAILINGS, TOO.

8.) is a complete YES man to Nancy.
PROVE IT. EVERYTHING I'VE HEARD IS THAT HIS HIRES WERE HIS ALONE AND SHE STAYED COMPLETELY AWAY FROM THE PROCESSES BOTH TIMES UNTIL THE HIRE WAS MADE. I'VE SEEN NOTHING IN PRINT OR RADIO THAT WOULD PROVE OTHERWISE. ALL YOU GOT IS SOMEBODY ELSE'S SPECULATION THAT YOU TURN INTO YOUR TWISTED VERSION OF THE TRUTH.

SOME OF US ARE GETTING MORE INVOLVED IN UCATS BECAUSE OF MT. SORRY BUT THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS. HE'S NOT PERFECT BUT HE'S PRETTY DAMN GOOD AND I LIKE THE PEOPLE HE'S HIRED IN THE DEPARTMENT.

The Gas Light District I believe is Clifton.
