Oscar and Tiki

I stumbled across this in the New York Times today in a column by William C. Rhoden about how Tiki Barber must feel seeing the Giants win the Super Bowl the year after he retired.

"In the midst of all the 'how must Tiki feel' speculation, I thought about Oscar Robertson, one of the greatest basketball players ever. Robertson was a star at the University of Cincinnati and led the Bearcats to the Final Four in 1960. The season after Robertson left, Cincinnati won the first of two consecutive national championships. I wondered how he felt.

'I was really happy for them,' Robertson said Thursday from his home in Cincinnati. 'Everything is timing, you know.'

Robertson said that when the star player left, younger players who watched and took notes often stepped up the following season.

'All that time, when the star is taking all that heat, getting double- and triple-teamed, you've got to learn something,' Robertson said. 'Without even knowing it, sometimes you lay a foundation.'

Was there any part of him that wished he were there to enjoy the thrill of winning a national championship?

'Naturally, I would have liked to have won while I was there, but I had my time,' he said. 'I couldn't go back; I had my time.' "

As most of you know, Oscar attends almost every UC home game. He sits right next to press row, so we can hear a lot of what he says during the games. He can be pretty critical at times, but the important thing is that all these years later he still cares about his alma mater. No one can question that.

Well Oscar didn't win a championship but it's fair to say he built the UC BB program.

A friend of mine a UC grad loaned me a CD I think made by Dan Burroughs(?) that was illuminative of the Big O's life in and out of BB. Younger folks don't realize what Oscar went thru in that time in the 1950's. After seeing the video my respect for Mr. Robertson grew. He's a class act.

UC and Cincy have a real treasure in Oscar.

I know Oscar can get a little cranky but I think he's earned that right. He is an ICON and he did put us on the map.

Oscar a little cranky? After watching the BB program he helped launch almost completely destroyed, it's a wonder that he isn't beside himself!

Since I wrote the original Oscar comment a few days ago, I think I should comment now. Mr 3D is a class act and probably one of the top ten athletes of all time. However, his timing has never all that good. When I was a senior at UC I had to attend a marketing class. in those days disciplines moved from class to class and as accounting majors we werent very intersted in marketing. The prof knew this of course so he started the class by saying "listen up, I had a student in this class last year who is making $30,000 this year" Since we knew that we would be happy to make $6000, we all asked who is that? With a smile he responded "Oscar Robertson". Talk about timing, if Oscar had come along 40 years later the number would have been at least $30,000,000! Happened to run into Oscar a few years ago at a driving range and Oscar was very gracious, even complimented my golf swing. So much for those stories that he is such a hard case!

3:07...he was probably a little more upset during the 80s don't you think? Anyone with half a brain can see the program is back on the upswing.

But thanks for stopping by to whine.

Oscar is back on board now that Huggs is gone. MC will never steal the big "O"'s thunder.

11:31, half a brain? That's twice what you've got. Now, drink your sippin' Mick koolaid and go back to your cave.

I have little love for the Big O, I have met the man personally and he turned his nose up to me, for ironic reasons. But he does have an NBA championship ring.

I guess 1:18 is still whining and crying because Huggs is gone. He'll still Big O's "thunder" when he gets to the Final Four and wins a national championship for UC, which he will do.

1:21...Sean's got some for you. It's called "Xavier is a threat for the Final Four juice". There aren't any LaSalles or Fordhams in the Big Dance. Lucky for you, there won't be any Temples either. Go back to your own crappy boards.
