Barwin moving to defensive end
Connor Barwin, a tight end during his first three years at the University of Cincinnati, will line up at defensive end next Tuesday when the Bearcats begin spring practice.
Barwin, from Hazel Park, Mich., caught 31 passes for 399 yards and two touchdowns last season, averaging 12.9 yards per catch.
He caught seven passes for 86 yards in UC’s PapaJohn’s.com Bowl victory over Southern Miss and six passes for 109 yards in the Bearcats’ regular-season win over Miami.
But UC coach Brian Kelly is convinced that because of his size and athleticism, Barwin can help the team more on defense after the departure of defensive ends Anthony Hoke and Angelo Craig.
“We graduated two very good defensive ends,” Kelly said. “We’re a four-down defense and we needed to complement what we do defensively. Connor has the ability to make us a better defense than last year. When we started looking at trying to get people in the right position, his name was one I couldn’t turn away from anymore.”
Kelly said Barwin was surprised when the move was first suggested, but that he gradually warmed to the idea.
The UC coach said the position change could actually enhance Barwin’s stock as an NFL prospect.
“His junior day was off the charts,” Kelly said. “He ran a 4.6 40. At 6-5, 255 pounds, the dozen or so NFL scouts looked pretty enamored with him and the thought of him playing defense. As we moved closer to making this decision, that kind of sealed it for us.”
The move is not just another spring practice experiment. In Kelly’s mind, it’s a done deal. Barwin is now a defensive end.
“That’s where we need him to play,” Kelly said. “I’m very confident that he can do it over there or I wouldn’t have made the move.
“As we sat and talked about it, it made a lot of sense. He’s going to be given an opportunity to line up and run around and be the athletic player that he is. He’ll never come off the field. He’s got a chance to play every snap.”
With Barwin now a defensive player, fourth-year junior Kazeem Alli is the likely starter at tight end. Alli played in 12 games last season. He caught two passes for 54 yards.

Looks like a nice move by Coach Kelly, given the graduations at defensive end.
Connor Barwin is a winning player -- talent, enough speed, great work ethic, and willing to do whatever it takes to help his team (including even the basketball team).
I hope this works out the way I think it will. Either way, I will remember Mr. Barwin as a great Bearcat athlete.
Connor Barwin has had one heck of a college athletic career.
Anyone know if he's also on the baseball, track, or swimming squads?
Wasn't this same move just recently been made with another offensive player,Craig Carey?

Connor Barwin on the BB team this year would have improved the teams chemistry. This year the BB team lacked effort and commitment to their fellow teammates to hustle every game and practice.
Conner Barwin is a team player. He was sorely missed this season on the BB team. By the way, does UC still have a basketball team?
It will be SO good when we close the chapter on this sorry excuse for UC basketball an d have a REAL coach and a REAL team again!
'WLMNMW' Prez...did you misread what Bill's post was about?
You are aware that Barwin has not been a basketball player lately? "Defensive end" is a position on the football team?
Absolutely amazes me that you can't find some other forum to post your comments that had nothing to do with this at all.
Back to the topic....he is obviously a great athlete. The move itself, after initially hearing it, concerned me. What's a given is that he is a solid threat as a pass receiving tight end was no doubt going to be a pro prospect at that very position.
I believe he can make the move to DE. And I bet BK feels that his athleticism far outweighs anything he will struggle with technique-wise.
As for replacing him at TE, BK must feel very confident in Ali as his replacement. That, or he doesn't plan to emphasize the TE too much in the spread....and not utilizing a skilled position in his offense doesn't make sense.
Definitely makes for an interesting side story to watch beginning in spring ball and into the regular season. I'll predict right now Barwin dominates in the spring.
Let's see...the fact that Conner Barwin is a team player and athletic enough to play BB has nothing to do with his ability to move from Offenive TE to Defensive End, in his last college year. Thanks for the insight Lee. Dah!
MsUC...
If that was your point, why didn't you just write that first instead? All you wrote was a comment about how Barwin would have helped the BASKETBALL team this year.
Newsflash: this blurb was about him changing positions in FOOTBALL. Google "football" and then "basketball" and tell us what you get. Hint: two completely different sports.
As far as the analogy that you made about him being athletic enough to play both hoops and football at this level...
Yes, beyond stating that he is a tremendous athlete, one has nothing to do with the other. Barwin being good enough to be a role player on the basketball team doesn't mean diddly squat on whether he'll be successful at moving from one FOOTBALL position to another. Again, it simply says that because he's a great athlete, he's got a pretty good shot at it. More specifically, BK said it was his speed that gives him the chance to be successful as a DE.
Thanks for reading. I'm always here to clear things up when singled out by a fellow reader.
leegero,
I was going to respond to your comments, but it appears as though msuc beat me to the punch...
Just remember though lee that 'We Love Mick No Matter What'
'WLMNMW' Prez...
Excellent....saved me time....now I know that I educated two people at once.
Conner Barwin is a very very good athletic. I am old enough to remember when teams did not make subs and players went both ways. If Conner is a good blocker, then he can tackle - basically the same technique but you have to wrap your arms in tackling. This kid will either be all world at defensive end or he will go back to TE. He has ability to be that good - but that is up to him. UC is of course hurting at DE - but it may end up being its strongest link in the defense before it is over.
