Big East coaches of the year from same school

Suppose Jim Calhoun was right and Mick Cronin really is the Big East coach of the year. That would give UC the football and men's basketball coaches of the year in the same year, which would be quite a thing. But it has been done before. In 1994-95 Miami's Dennis Erickson was the football coach of the year and Leonard Hamilton was the basketball coach of the year.

Whether Mick gets it or not, I think it's evidence that we have an AD with a knack for hiring coaches. I am pleased.

At this point, it's a slam dunk. Mick is the BE COY barring a 5-game losing streak to end the year.

Way too soon to be talking about this!

Get back to us after G'Town, Pitt, and UConn games. A true COY motivates the Cats to go 2-1 in those games.

If Sippin' wins four of the last five, then he's definitely COY. If not, he'll have to win three out of five and then at least two BE tournament games. Anything else and it simply doesn't happen.

What a shill! I just wish we could get an objective writer to cover UC basketball in this town. This team is 13-12, by seasons end they will be .500 at best. NCAA tourney, Coach of the Year, OK Bill. You must be barking for a cut of the gate.

Win four out of the next five and a couple of tourney games and I'll eat those words.

If not MC then who?
Didn't calhoun bench 2 starters and his team is surging?

Calhoun and Pitino are the other two viable options for Coach of the Year.

Right now I like Calhoun, then Cronin, and Pitino third. Conneticutt's been on a tear ever since they squeaked by UC. But if the Cats win a couple more games against the better teams, Mick hoists the honor.

Even Calhoun would agree with that. Speaking of Calhoun, the more I watch him handle his teams, the more I am convinced he is one of top 5 coaches in all of college basketball. Not only does he handle the refs well, he keeps his team calm and focused near the end of the game. Impressive work by him this year.

Bill. It must give you pleasure to be called a shill. That is the last thing most UC fans would call you. Cheviot, you know little about college basketball as evidenced by your posts. Given what he inherited, Mick is by far the favorite for coach of the year. I agree Pitino and Calhoun deserve strong consideration but if Mick goes 2-3 in the last five games and wins one in the Big East tournament he should be COY.

To qualify for COY, the coach's team should have exceeded expectations beyond those of other coaches and their teams. At this point, that puts Mick squarely in the running (despite CSA's miserable sniping). The key phrase is "AT THIS TIME"...There is still a lot of hoops left and our competition is stiff.

At this point it appears that the Bearcats will end the regular season right around .500. NCAA? No. NIT? Maybe.
Am I thrilled with that? No. Given the fine tradition of this basketball program, this season will not go down as a big success. Nor should it.
Was the situation with Bob Huggins and/or Andy Kennedy handled properly? Of course not. Just look at what happened. If you were a big-time player in high school, would you want to come into this situation? I think not. And they sure didn't, for the most part.
Insert Mick Cronin into this fiasco -- a coach taking over an elite program used to success and fans that demand nothing less.
I'm sorry, but 11-19 his first year didn't cut it -- no matter what the obstacles were.
Now, we're 13-12 (8-5 in the Big East), and back on track to replenish the program with guys who can play at a high level.
The progress is undeniable. It may not satisfy everyone, but facts are facts. This program is on an upswing.
Coach of the Year? Personally, I'd like to see him get it. But whether Coach Cronin does or not, I'm more than comfortable that we have the right coach for the program.
Will he return UC to the glory years? Who knows. But he certainly deserves our patience based on the progress shown so far.

Some people think COY should only go to a team that didn't finish on top or very near the top. I don't like that approach. Mick will win the COY more than once, but it would be a joke this year. His team was way unprepared to play ball for the first several games. And it isnt' like UC is beating all comers at this point. I tip my hat to Mick for a good transitional season, but not COY. I would vote for Calhoun.

To be honest, and I don't like X but I would give a serious look at Miller for COY. They are poised to make a nice tourney run. Hopefully we can do the same.

Go Cats

Re: Big East coach of the year for Mick Cronin

During the G'town vs. L'ville game a week ago, Vitale and Bilas discussed who they thought should be the BE coach of the year. They mentioned Mike Bray and then Mick.

Re: UC in the NCAA

Joe Lunardi said YESTERDAY that they are definitely in the conversation and could soon go on his "Last 4 out" list. They also are included in "Bubble Watch" on ESPN's college basketball site, BTW along with WVA, coached by you-know-who (UC killed WVA at their house and is ahead of them in the Big East standings). Jerry Palm has said he will look at them after a couple more wins. (Note to CSA - 'just thought you might be intrigued by some other opinions and facts for a change)

Re: Sean Miller for BE coach of the year (that is what we are discussing, isn't it?)

With the IU job open, Big 10 coach of the year is more likely, but if the Pitt job opens up down the road he is gone. (I'm being facetious, Buehler. Will you please pay attention?)

^ just a hunch, but considering that miller doesn't coach in the BE, I don't think he's going to win COY.

On a funny note of "Coach of the Year" polls. The Columbus Dispatch had a poll where numerous college football coaches from Ohio voted for the Ohio college football COY. Here is the website to see the staggering results : http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/football/stories/2008/01/27/ohfb_coach_of_year_voting.ART_ART_01-27-08_C5_LF95UIM.html?sid=101

As you can see coach Kelly did not receive a single solitary vote! A top 25 finish and not even a vote? This makes me crack up with the football establishment north of Cincinnati.

Today's beat-down at Georgetown shows why Mick isn't in the running for COY. Pitino deserves it.

at 3:52 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

12:30 That was a mistake by the Dispatch. They came out a day or two later and said that they mistakenly lumped all of the votes for both Kellys into Mike Kelly's total. Actually Brian Kelly finished 2nd in the voting. I don't know why they never fixed the error on that page you listed.
