Goodbye to the seniors

Every year when basketball practice starts in October, there's a period of adjustment as I learn to associate the new names with the new faces. Two years ago, when Mick Cronin re-started the UC program basically from scratch, the task was more difficult than usual because there were virtually no veterans with whom I was already familiar. Everybody was new. It took awhile, but eventually I figured out who everybody was. Now, after two years, Marcus Sikes, Jamual Warren, Marvin Gentry, John Williamson and Adam Hrycaniuk will play their last UC home game tomorrow night vs. DePaul.

These guys have taken a lot of grief because they haven't been as talented as past UC players. They did nothing to deserve that grief. All they did was play as hard as they could and do their best to help rebuild the program. I'll admit that sometimes it's hard to watch them play because of their talent limitations. But there have been other times when I've been impressed by what they've been able to accomplish under difficult circumstances.

From my standpoint, every one of them has been pleasant to deal with. Jamual Warren, who wears his heart on his sleeve, has been the best quote because he says what's on his mind, even though he likes to make fun of my sweaters. Adam H., with his Polish accent and his willingness to share what he's gone through the past two years, is always fun to talk to. Marcus Sikes is so polite and respectful that no matter how many times I've asked him to call me Bill he still shakes hands when I see him and says, "Hello, Sir."

None of them has embarrassed the university with off-the-court behavior and all five of them will graduate. Sikes, Gentry and Williamson are expected to graduate at the end of the current quarter. Warren and Hrycaniuk are on target to graduate at the end of spring quarter.

When Bob Huggins arrived at UC in 1989 to take over a program on probation, he talked about how Andre Tate, Levertis Robinson, Lou Banks and Keith Starks would be remembered as the players who helped start the program back on the road to success. That's exactly what they did. Assuming that UC returns to national prominence in the next few years, the current crop of seniors will be remembered the same way.

Well put Bill.

I wonder if these guys will be as fondly remembered as the players of the Yates and Badger tenures. Can anyone name any of them? Thanks to these seniors for helping us at least keep from hitting the absolute bottom and best wishes for the future. Likely, it won't be in BB except maybe Adam H., who the European "pros" want back so desperately.

Good perspective Bill.

We may get some home games in the NIT though, so it may not be their last home games.

Bill,

How can you say they have given it their all when they obviously have lacked in the effort department at times? Their on-and-off defense proves such a statement true.

Bill,

Couldn't agree more. These young men came here when nobody else was willing to commit to UC. I am dying because I am not able to attend tomorrow night - I coach HS ball and we have our winter sports awards - I would skip, but I have my own seniors to honor. Anyhow, to answer the question above by ANON 1:28, these seniors' names will always be remembered by me and every other UC fan that actually cares. Not only will they be former players, but they are going to become fellow alumni - it's been a long time since we had 5 seniors to honor because of basketball and GRADUATION!!!

Nice post Bill. These seniors are more than just basketball players. They are young men who have done their best, gone to class, represented UC well, and are going to graduate -- exactly what we all want our own sons to do.
What's not to like about them?
None of us can control how much talent we've been blessed with. All we can do is try to get the most out of it. I'm convinced that these players have done that.

Let us not forget Mr. Warrens escapade before the season started that really affected the team.

Lou Banks, what a player! Were it not for a silly rape charge he would have had an NBA career no doubt.

Anon 2:28,

Thanks for the fond memories. Now did they accomplish about as much as Adam H.? Of course, they didn't get into any trouble, so those were great times except ON the court, weren't they??

I don't think going to get help after fracturing your hand in an auto accident really counts as an"escapade". Just about anyone might do that in the same situation. I mean come on, it's not like he killed someone with a trenching tool...

How many of the five seniors are going to leave UC with a diploma?

at 2:53 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

good thoughts Bill -

at 3:27 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is just great! How many students leave UC with a diploma? What is the percentage who leave UC without a diploma?

The important question is: When are we going to have a real basketball team at UC again????

at 3:43 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wrong !
Andre Tate, Levertis Robinson, Lou Banks and Keith Starks were good basketball players.

Marcus Sikes, Jamual Warren, Marvin Gentry, John Williamson and Adam Hrycaniuk may be nice people but are not good basketball players.

They never would have gotten the opportunity to play on a UC BB team in normal circumstances.

Best wishes to the 5 students.

Bill, Nice send-off for these seniors.
Too bad that no matter how positive you write you always have those that have to add their negative slant to the post.

I am sure they are all good men and its very nice that they are graduating. I have no gripe with the players, never have, never will as long as they give their best.

Kids their age would give up their left walnut to get the opportunity that these guys got. Obviously they are the kids that were left out by the big time programs. They were given the opportunity because of the ridiculous situation at UC and they made the most of it. More power to them. But what kid that age wouldn't? Its not like they passed up going elsewhere to save UC. They came here because it gave them the chance to play, not to mention the free education that came with it.

They deserve the same recognition and respect that any other graduating seniors receive, nothing more nothing less.

The saddest part of all the negativity surrounding the BB program is the fact that it should have never happened. As much as some wish it would disappear, there are circumstances that likely must occur before that might happen.

One would be the departure of the current president and the remaining member(s) of the BOT who so botched up the entire basketball program and the dismissal of the previous two coaches.

Another would be the return of UC BB to national prominence.

Until one, or even better, both of these occur, the disappointment, and in some cases, resentment will not go away.

Sincerely,

President of the 'We Love Mick No Matter What' Fan Club

Always a sad time when the seniors move on. These guys aren't getting the credit that they deserve by many, and that's a damned shame. They have set the bar in many ways, and it will be raised many times by those who follow.

Thanks for your personal thoughts, Bill...Many thanks to the kids as well. To get to where you want to be you have to start somewhere. These kids did a fine job setting the table, and while they may not be missed by all for thier on floor talents, they sure won't be forgotten as UC continues to improve.

These players actually did have other options - despite the uninformed opinions of some posters. Marcus Sikes was on scholarship at Georgia and transferred and John Williamson was a top 5 JUCO player when Mick got him - I don't know the schools he turned down, but I guarantee he had options. In addition, Warren and Gentry would have ended up somewhere as well. Were they all Big East caliber when recruited? No. However, they have done better than anyone could have imagined. SMMM and anyone else who is ignorant when it comes to the situation these young men were in need to step back and rethink their comments about questioning their talents - like the editor said this morning - would you tell these young men to their faces they stink or they're no good? I didn't think so. I am going to miss the seniors (especially John Williamson and Jamual Warren - they would be a huge help if they had more eligibility)and I wish them the best in the future - thanks for taking a risk and thanks for believing in what MICK is building in Clifton!

A TRUE BEARCAT!!!

Reading the response of people to these seniors is rather interesting. One statement was made that this current crop of seniors would not have made it on teams of the past. While that may be true, it is also fair to ask how well Huggins first crop of seniors would have done this year in the Big East rather than the Metro. The point is this: that first crop gave us some great memories (how many remember Levertis giving about 6 shot fakes before he shot the ball each time?), and this crop of seniors accomplished way more than anyone expected at the beginning of the year. Every business, team, and franchise goes through tough years. It could be argued that these guys bled even more Red and Black than other teams in the past simply for the circumstances they were placed in and how well they handled them. And graduating all five cannot be minimized. Like it or not, the NCAA does care very much about this. These guys have represented the university and the city well. Thank you seniors.

The truth will set you free.
The 5 seniors got a unique opportunity to play basketball for UC. They were rewarded with a scholarship and a chance to pursue their BB dreams against D1 BE talent. Should we feel grateful for their contribution or sorry to see them go?

What should we say to their face? You hypocrites, the truth would help these kids. Would you ask them to stay for another year to play BB if that was an option? Would you tell them they are very talented BB players and should pursue an NBA career? If you’re a friend the obvious answer is NO !

Get real when you criticize others. The truth is not always pretty or gracious. But the truth provides a realistic assessment of life. Gratuitous behavior and accolades help no one, including these 5 seniors.

Danny, I never said anything about them not having other offers. Some may have, but I didn't. I did question their effort/intensity.

And the fact a few of them apparently have some talent makes me question Mick's coaching skills even more.

Bill,

You know that I am right and that the seniors have not given their all for any length of time. Their defense has been on a steady decline now for the past month.

Obviously some of the seniors have talent which really makes me question Mick's coaching ability, the team still is not progressing.

Bill,

Excellent post. We owe the seniors a packed house. They came here knowing that they would be here only two years and to a team that had four scholarship players.

The people who are negative on any board whom are UC fans are not true fans.

Mick is doing everything the right way. He and the University will be rewarded for his relentless recruiting and honesty.

I'm proud of Mick, the players and my alma mater class of 1985, UC!

at 9:05 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mick tends to play down to his competition - I hope he can do a better job agains a pitiful DePaul team tonight than he did against Providence.

Bill - which senior will you most miss? sounds like Warren, but is there anyone else?

at 9:18 AM Blogger Unknown said...

3:43 & Slippin Monica,

Wrong about Williamson, in particular. I think he's got a lot of ability. I wish he'd have had a year to play with Hicks.

Williamson was one of those diamonds in the rough who gradually shone through the more opportunity he was given. If it's true that the Big East is one of the premier basketball conferences, then Williamson has proven he can play with the best.

10:20........great post but some may see it as a little harsh.

I'm between admiration and apathy towards these 5 seniors. They had a couple great upset wins but they had many, many more games when they did not hustle and lost to inferior talent.

Being willing to be led to slaughter is not a trait I particulary find endearing, especially if your not giving it your best effort on and off the court.

However, I do wish these men success in life and they're always welcome back on campus to support the CATS.

Go BearCats !

Your impersonations won't work anymore. I have a blogger name now.

And Bill, what type of effort do you expect out of "these" seniors for their last game?

at 9:53 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

SMMM and Anons, Who didn't put forth enough effort? Who was "passed over" by other schools? John Williamson? John was first team Juco All American from Cincinnati State. I believe from the day he arrived in Cincinnati he wanted to be a Bearcat. He had an offer from Purdue and maybe others, but he did not sign. I believe Andre Tate told him that he could play for the Bearcats when they decided who was going to coach.

Ever since Cronin told John to assert himself, he has been on fire. He was recruited as SF, but plays at PF. I believe he is a small power forward. He is not Eric Hicks. He is not Pete Mickeal, but I see a lot of Pete Mickeal in John Williamson. He will take the ball strong and bang with Glansberry, etc.

In the replay of his technical in DC, I saw Hibbert walking away with a big grin on his face. I believe that Hibbert said something to John and John wanted to fight about. Some of us know that basketball is a game played with emotion (e.g. Hicks). If you don't play with emotion, you don't play with your full effort. If you don't play with emotion and energy, you lose.

I saw John's punch in the Friars game and again, I believe our guy was not to blame. He punched and then grabbed his eye. Sometimes emotion pops out at the wrong time. What are you going to do if somebody sticks their finger in your eye? I hope John says in Cincinnati, comes to the open gym in the summer and breathes some fire into the new players.

Jamaul was passed over? Not trying? Jamaul Warren was second team Juco All American. When he left high school in 2002 he wanted to be a Bearcat. I believe if a reporter calls his mama, she will say the same thing. According to one reporter in 2002 he had offers from Memphis, St. John's, Seton Hall, Maryland, and Providence, but he said (paraphrasing) "I really want to be a Bearcat." Some of us know why he wanted to be a Bearcat in 2002. I guess he didn't qualify. His dream finally came true.

We will miss Jamaul next year, especially when the freshmen guards try to get the ball through Lville full court press. Jamual is a good ball handler and just waves his team mates down court and dribbles through the press. Maybe I exaggerate, but we will miss Jamaul experience and ball skills next year.

I could continue with Adam Hryanciuk, but in the interest of peace, will only say that Biggie is hurt and not ready. This year, Biggie doesn't have the strength to box out the other bigs. Ideally, Adam should have been on the bench and only come in to give the Biggie a rest. This year he started every game. I hope Mick can find another 6'10 Juco guy with Adam's strength to backup Biggie next year.

Still reading? Sorry about the length.

Thanks to the young men for their efforts at UC.
Congratulations on being on track for their degrees.
To the negative posters, its not these kids fault that bad decisions were made by former coaches and administrators.
They were truly the ones trying to clean up the crap left to them.

5 seniors who gave it their all to uphold bearcat basketball tradition!

also, up and down performances are to be expected in sports. this is how upsets happen, and when you have less talent the downs go WAY down. not necessarily a lack of hustle. these kids worked as hard as you can reasonably expect.

In answer to several questions: I think the senior I'll miss the most is Adam Hrycaniuk. I have a lot of admiration for what he's done living as far away from home as he has and staying here after he was declared ineligible last year. I know he misses a lot of layups and I also know how much it pains him when that happens. I think the seniors will play as hard the rest of the way as they have to this point. Yes, there have been times when Mick has complained that they didn't play hard enough, but Huggins frequently said the same things about his players. Remember, these guys were beaten down mentally last year but still came back this year to show a lot improvement. I think they deserve credit for that. As for the best way for UC basketball to get back to where it once was, there is only one way and that is to recruit good players. I think Mick Cronin is doing that. I don't think some of the people who post comments here understand just how bad off this program was in the spring of 2006 when Cronin took over.

Bill these seniors have not shown the ability to compete at the Big East level with any consistency. I cannot say with a straight face that they saved the program either. They had options to go elsewhere. They chose to play in the Big East, why should I feel sorry for them?

per Bill's " I don't think some of the people who post comments here understand just how bad off this program was in the spring of 2006 when Cronin took over."

i disagree. Most knew the progam and administration were in shambles. However, if a Coach K, Donovan, R Williams or like coach was hired, he would have recruited starting studs for the 2007 class.

A 2-3 rebuilding period has turned into a 4-5 year rebuild.

And nothing at all from you regarding the other two seniors who also likely turn down scores of top BB schools like the other three.

OAHFC,
Glad you liked it. Bill took over on Adam where I left off and I'm disappointed in Sikes and Gentry. I expected Sikes and Gentry to shoot threes.

We need 8 or 9 good players and this year we had two maybe three. It's easier to recruit when the recruits think they are coming to a winning program.

The jury is out on Mick for a few more years. It doesn't matter whether I love Mick or not, since the program is in Mick's hands. All we can do is trust in Mick. Nothing is accomplished by ridicule and hatred consumes those who hate. Just saying.
