Another step on the road back

There was a time, of course, when making the conference tournament was no big deal for UC. The question for the Bearcats was whether they would get the No. 1 seed. But given the condition this program was in last year when Mick Cronin took over, having clinched one of the 12 spots in the tournament with three regular-season games to go is a noteworthy achievement. Winning a game or two in the tournament would be even more of an accomplishment.

"Making the Big East Tournament was definitely a goal of ours this year," Cronin said. "It wasn’t something that I was concerned with until Mike Williams got hurt. When Mike got hurt obviously it became a concern because he was going to be our most experienced player. I thought he was going to change our team, giving us a veteran go-to guy, a guy you could count on on both ends of the floor."

Next year, of course, all 16 Big East teams will qualify for the tournament. And Cronin thinks that's a good idea.

"As coaches we'd like to have all 16 get in," Cronin said. "It's unfair to the players of the four teams that don’t make it. It's not like they haven’t tried all year. It takes that experience away from 52 kids and that’s’ really what it's all about. Even at the highest level, the majority of these kids don’t go on to play professional ball so you'd like to make sure that those kids have that experience."

Mike Williams excuse is one of my favorites.

Oh, great. The way Mick is talking about Mike Williams reminds me of the things that he used to say about Adam H. And, we all know how well that's worked out!

If UC had Mike Williams this would be a Final Four team. Mick has me so excited about what Mike Williams is going to do next year. Wouldn't surprise me to see him win POY next year when he takes UC all the way!!

Seriously, does he ever not whine?

And getting trophies for participating in the tourney goes out in 5th grade. I think only the top 10 should go to MSG for the tourney.

Thanks for the notes Bill. Very revealing.

Sippin' likes the idea of all the teams making the Big East tourney, because it'll be one less thing for him to be laughed at about. Like last year...and maybe next year.

CSA you are a loser why dont you just go away. I have seen Mike Williams play and he is a lot better than Williamson. If he played this year we would have 17-18 wins. Remember folks that Warren missed the first few games as well. Mark it down here, we will make the NCAA Tourney next year and you bandwagoners are not allowed on.

I know CSA and those like him thought UC should have been challenging for a national title this year (like AK and BH are - oh wait, maybe not), so I guess that is why they are disappointed.

Bill, is there any update on Alvin Mitchell?

This must be the place where the bandwagon UC fans come to die along with the UK and XU fans/UC haters.

Whatya know, CSA is the first (and second, as always) to post and bitch about MC. How'd Huggins do today?

I guess having Mike out for the year didn't hurt UC at all.

Good point, Coach Cronin. After all, this is still amateur basketball. It is the end of the line for a whole lot of seniors.

It's a gracious thing rather than a legalistic one.

Serious question CSA. Why do you post here?

Same tired negative comments about Mick and Adam and alleged excuses and the season.

C'mon guys let's go forward. Let it go. Enjoy the progress. Rome wasn't built in a day.

The constant comparisons to a long departed distant past make me drowsy. Same old, same old. In a program where the fans are more upbeat and less bitter, I see a working class guy like Adam H, a guy with a big heart, great effort, and many flaws in his game, developing folk hero status. The crowd favorite. Makes for a fun time at the games, too. Kinda like Freel on the Reds. The little engine that could, the desire guy who makes ya groan, then makes ya smile. The guy the crowd gets a kick out of pulling for.

He had nothing to do with the mess that preceded him. He inherited the situation the program was in. He shows up with a good attitude and unselfish approach every day. He is the only presence in the middle in two years, and he's played decently and hard. Sure, he's limited, his flaws are well documented, but hey Vaughn dribbles off his foot a lot, too and sometimes drifts out of focus on the floor. So what? H. has battled some of the best big guys in college basketball, and he's done OK. This being his first and only year in the Big East, we'll never know if a second year might have seasoned him into a more comfortable player or seen him stay the same. Most JuCos need a year to adjust. and he falls into that category.

As for Williams, Mick saying he was counting on him for leadership and offense is merely a statement of fact. Injuries reak havoc on lost of teams every year. Acknowledging it is not excuse making. This team isn't deep enough to lose anybody. Next year's team should be closer to the normal depth needed for a good program. Add some experience to the mix, and we may have something.

Watching a program rebuild and mature into something exciting is fun. Only happens a few times. No one was sure if Huggins would do it when he started here. Give Cronin a break. Repeating the same old criticisms over and over gets stale.

CSA,

You're at it again. Going and getting all of the Mick Lovers upset. Why don't you simply tell them what they want to hear? Like Mick is the greatest coach ever. Or that Adam H. is going to be national POY. Or that UC will win the national title next year. All of these are equally likely, but stating them would please the Mick Lovers to no end!

There is one thing that we can be sure of next season - They'll make the new, distinquished, everybody gets in, Big East tournament. Wow!!

Your Buddy

Anon 1:09,

Thank you for the long, windy, boring speech. Has all of this been stewing inside and you just had to let off some steam?

Mick, for his part, was given a bare closet. However, he does seem to offer more than his share of excuses. Only time and some real D-1 players will show if he's cut out to be a top level coach. Can't really run the race without the horses.

Next year, Mike Williams, will show what he's made of - one way or the other. Since, he'll probably be four or five years older than some of his teammates, some leadership would seem to come almost by default.

All of which brings us to Adam H., who seems to have found a feel good place in your heart. Probably would mine also if this were the Special Olympics or he was a walk on that only appeared in the closing moments of games. However, the fact that he actually STARTS is a testiment in itself as to the current sorry state of the UC BB program.

Hopefully, soon we'll again have a BB program to really be proud of, one again that teams never look forward to playing. That's far from the case today.

LOL, My second favorite excuse is: Warren missed six games (with an injury suffered while breaking the law at 1AM).

By the way, I consider all posts under anonymous or with names in black and no big 'B' in front of them as all coming from the same moron. So they are rarely read and never taken with even a grain of salt here.

Who would you Mick Basher have picked as the next coach of UC? Who would have come to UC and stepped right into "BIG" Bob's shoes, and not missed a beat, or the NCAA's? Gillispie has done nothing at UK...because he was left with no recruits. It's just not that easy. So I ask the Mick "Haters", please inform us simple folk, who should have been the coach?

who is the big name JR BB player ready to commit to UC?

I bet you were one of the well-informed posters that didn't think we'd win a game in the Big East this year.

You seriously have no clue, and everytime you post all you do is further show how little you know about the situation.

Now get dressed and get ready for work, it's almost lunch hour at mickey d's, they need you on fries today.

CSA,

Jason is looking for you to help him at mickie d's today.

Do you want Jason to carry the whole load today at mickie d's all by his little ol' self?

How is that any different then getting trophies for getting knocked out of the 2nd round? And then whining about how HIS players didn't work hard, and we have bad luck. WAAAAA, Denny Crum said I had the worst luck of any coach! Waaaa, Cheviot and his girlfriends will take down Mick for me since I can't get it done on the court against him!

"Mick, for his part, was given a bare closet. However, he does seem to offer more than his share of excuses. "

Yet Bob Huggins didn't? How many times did we have to listen to Bob Huggins use excuses? We were beat on a fluke shot. We would have won if Kenyon hadn't broken his leg, something Mick Bashers NEVER would have let him forget. Huggins saying that UC lost in the regional finals to lower seeded Mississippi State because LeGree had an injured foot. Or Bob Huggins saying that Denny Crum told him one time that he was the unluckiest coach he had ever seen and you need luck to win? Or that his players didn't play hard or work hard or listen? Or that UC lost because some guy happened to get hot? For you guys whining about Huggins your hero had plenty of excuses and you still kissed his behind. Huggins MIGHT make the NCAAs this year, but he'll pull his usual first weekend disappearing act.

Anon 6:12,

You are so right. Now we don't have to worry about exiting the Big Dance early. In fact, it may be a very LONG time until that's even a possibility. In the meantime, just keep kissing your beloved coach Mickie's behind.

anonymous @ 1:57...

well, i change my stance. at least CSA can actually make some kind of argument rather than just tail on to someone else.

on another note...cronin's complaints are justified. cronin was around when UC got dropped to a 2 seed after kenyon martin got hurt, so he has a legitimate point in that they should take injuries into consideration when it works the other way.

who knows how big of an impact mike williams would've had if he would've played this year...but you'd expect he'd at least go for 10 points a game, which would make him the 3rd leading scorer. and nobody that watched this team play before and after warren can make an argument that he wouldn't have made a difference in those first 6 games.

people that bash cronin are typically uninformed are so stuck in the past with huggs and nancy that they show that they are not true fans of UC.
